If Susan Buck-Morss is right, the Haitian Revolution insprired Hegel to formulate his master slave dialectics. Hegel's philosophy, in turn, was crucial for Marx to write his political economy, which laid the theoretical groundwork for revolutionary movements all over the world. The debt owed to Haiti still remains to be paid.

Daily reminder that Haiti suffered centuries of economic blockage by France and the U.S. and was forced to pay back millions of francs (billions of dollars in today's money) to France for "lost property", that property being the Haitan people. It took until 1947 for Haiti to pay this debt in full. The combination of economic blockage and massive debt, which forced the country to take out loans and increase its debt, financially ruined the free island nation, as was by design.
The United States and France wanted to make an example out of Haiti. A succesful nation created and run by freed slaves would inspire slave revolts everywhere, and undermine the basis of "neccesary" white supremacy upon which American and European colonialism was built. Today, Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world. As far as setting an example goes, colonial powers have succeeded.
France has denied any reparations or repayment to the Haitan nation for the debt forced on them for the crime of wanting to be free.
