Visited last September from UK. I learned about this special place in music history from the Sonny Landrith song. Very quiet on a weekday lunchtime, but I was very happy to sit there and try to drink in some of its past.

Most excellent intro to the early sounds of jazz. Extremely well presented. Many thanks!

I want to hear more about the roots of jazz.... What parts of Africa (I guess mainly the Congo Basin?) and what rhythms exactly.. Are there some percussionist who can demonstrate the types of trad rhythms which fed into the mix? Names?

That’s Baba Luther Gray at 1:48. With the gray hair. I went to Congo Square last year and met him there on a Sunday. He taught me everything about the Congo Square. If you get the chance to meet him, consider yourself blessed. You will learn a LOT.

She also said that Congo square is located "directly behind the St. Louis Cathedral" which it's not!

I think she was giving proximity to major landmarks. It's only a 5-8 minute walk / 4 or blocks.@@nola3058

She mentioned Haiti, but a large number of African slaves in New Orleans were brought there from other parts of the U.S. after the the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. There were very few records of where the Africans originated for 3 primary reasons - 1 - is because Africa had not yet been divided into countries, 2 - most of them came there from northern states, not Africa, and 3 - the Africans origins were from various locations with different languages.
