I noticed you mentioning (quite a few times) that you didn’t know the reason why certain functions or features on this camera exist.
1) The webcam function is intended for people who want the “professional” video quality as well as the different focal lengths or use of shallow depth of field while doing a live stream, interview, conference calls, etc. Which is not only useful in the CZcams era, but especially so in the Covid era.
2) Bluetooth 5.0 is a big step up from Bluetooth 4.2 due to its instantaneous pairing, more reliable connection, and better data transfer. No more issues with trying to get it to connect, sudden disconnects, or slow transfer speeds.
3) 16x9 crops are useful for people who are shooting images to be used as video thumbnails.
Agreed. 16/9 is something best cropped later in production. Thanks!
The nikon video/photo switch is so important for hybrid work - just revisited Taylor Jackson's R6 review and the way it switches is pretty useless for that type of work.
@@terrywbreedlove yeah, that’s why any of the crop modes exist, really. It makes no sense for Ken to praise other crop modes then say that 16:9 for video thumbnails is “better done later in post production” 🤷🏼♂️
@@KenRockwellTV All crops are better done in post. What are you talking about?
@@kylefraser6456 then why does he continually say he prefers to have it right out of the camera. 16:9 would be out of the camera. Frankly it’s just a lot of blah blah blah
Not sure why you keep recommending the Canon RP over the z5, I've used both and hands down the Nikon is the better camera. The only reason to buy the RP is price.
We all have our preferences,. Here's why I prefer Canon www.kenrockwell.com/tech/comparisons/nikon-vs-canon-vs-sony-full-frame.htm Thanks!
Agreed. The z5 is literally better in every way
He’s so anal about being able to use retro lenses with autofocus.
The RP is absolute trash compared to the Z5 lol.
Yeah kerockwell sold out to cannon
Wow! Really appreciate your excellent review. Very helpful and one of the best on You Tube by far.
Thank you!
Thanks Ken. I have always appreciated you sharing your wisdom. I have learned a lot from you over the years. I appreciate your stance on Nikon vs Canon. There weren’t enough negatives in this camera to move me to Canon this time. I hope Nikon continues to find their way. I think the Z mount offers a lot of opportunities. Since I moved up from DX, I don’t have legacy glass and am moving mostly to Z mount. I have been impressed so far. One thing I will say about the Raw vs Jpg discussion is that people pay lots of money for these great processors in the cameras and don’t really utilize what they provide. They’ll take a Raw file and do the same things the camera would do, and end up exporting out a JPG anyway. LOL.
thanks!
Fantastic reviews Ken. Thank you.
Thank YOU!
Nikon Z5 been a favourite of mine since it first came out. It is simple, works, really a photographer's camera, with the photos it takes.
Bingo!!!

If I were to reply with anything, as a professional, it wouldn't be "bingo".
That shows that you have contempt for @timroberts6828's choice to prefer Nikon. The comment "bingo" comes off as unprofessional and sarcastic.

Good review on the Z5! I will probably pass on this camera, but it would make a nice travel kit. I shot a dance performance recently and my Z6 ll with the new battery grip was a great combo! The images were great, the AF using Auto Area AF was flawless and shooting in low light was a breeze. This is a big step up from the Z6.
That’s right. Z6 was awful and Z6 II finally almost what it should have been I’ve 2 years ago..thanks!
Nikon has the best color science, bar none, even Canon IMO.
@@stanobert3475 I have Canon R5 and Nikon Z7 for music photography (I'll trade my Z7 to whatever 45megapixel small Nikon comes out next but will keep R5 for good).. i would prefer to shoot Nikon, and definitely Nikon's better for landscapes, and certain acts (e,g. heavy metal, family fun park music etc) i really do prefer Nikon.. but.. Canon in music industry it's more accepted. People think I'm unusual to own both Canon and Nikon but they both have their uses. When I first got into serious photography 2007, I said "I'm going to only have Canon and Nikon - biggest companies (at that time) most stuff available cheap / 2nd hand!".

Finally got the Z5 with that tiny little kit lens. My first ever foray into full frames, jumping from that entry level APS-C Canon I've been using for years.....so far I have been astonished with the quality of the photos, especially so as this is the quality from a kit lens, not even from an 'S' lens. With IBIS and weather proofing and practically the same magnesium build and button layout without skimping on any single button from the Z6/7, this camera is a bargain!
Loved your review thoroughly! Subbed! Cheers from India!
Hi! Hint: S means nothing. The kit lenses are just as sharp as you can see; S lenses just cost more. Thanks!
@@KenRockwellTV i will keep that in mind. Will add all those adapter in my cart. Thanks for the insights. I never could have guessed that a single camera system could be made this versatile.
I was using your site review for Nikon D7000 and Nikkor DX lenses years ago, nice to see your review in CZcams, as always great review
Thank you!!!!
Just bought the 24/200 4-6.3 vr for my Z5. helpfull info which no one will test. I mounted the lens and proceeded to accidently dropped the whole rig (never dropped a camera in my life). good fall off a table and on to hardwood floor. no issues, checked it all out. good for you Nikon!
Yes!!! These plastic lenses usually do a pretty good job of bouncing. Whew!
I'm intrigued by how Nikon expanded the number of non-CPU lens data slots; it makes me wonder if they're planning on releasing a more fully functional FTZ adapter later on. That would be consistent with their recent business model: give up old features for one or two cycles only to pay more to get them back later.
Ugh.
Thanks for the review. Great to finally see this one up close.
Time will tell - if Nikon is still in the consumer camera business in five years. Go Canon, everything works, today.

Fantastic and very thorough review! Ken, I would like to ask if the EVF on a Z6 II is better than a Z5's in regards to low light situations, like photographing the milky way. As you show us at 17:00 it is really difficult to focus on the Z5 and the image quality through the EVF is really crappy. Are things better on a Z6 or a Z6 II? Would you suggest sticking to a DSLR for astrophotography?
Yes, use a DSLR for Astro. Mirrorless varies, but they’re all pretty bad in pitch black. Thanks!
@@KenRockwellTV Many thanks! I appreciate it!
I am loving this. I have been using D5600’s for their touch screen performance and battery life and their compact light weight. They are pretty disposable but much tougher than they look. I’ve only broken one in the last two years. This looks like a perfect time to swap to mirrorless. I fancy the 28-200 and maybe the newest wide to telephoto zoom. Do I need fx? I honestly don’t know. No built in flash, I use the little Nikon flash Ken does with the flip up head and super fast recycling.
Be careful, the Z6 and Z7 had AWFUL autrofocus for action. It may be time to step up to Canon Mirrorless; the Canon EOS Canon EOS R5 and Canon EOS Canon EOS R6 are the best on earth www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/index.htm thanks!
@@KenRockwellTV Sure.

Thank you!!!
Good real world review, as usual. However a comparo of the Z5 to the RP (vs R6) may appeal to some of us Nikon guys with shorter pockets. Either way, new lenses are likely in the mix for those not invested in Canon. Z-lenses seem to make excellent images.
Canon so rules. I should have said that In a few places. RP is a better camera for less.
Nice to see you in youtube
Thank you!
Good job Ken.. Thank you...
Thank YOU!
Thank you this was a great video as I am so close to purchasing this camera in my budget. If I have only one lense to buy for it would you recommend the 24-50 or the lense that goes to 200?
I love the Z 24-200. It does everything. The 24-50 is tiny and fun, but limiting for me.
Much more thorough in user-oriented terms than other reviews I've seen and read. The number of variables inherent in digital photography is overwhelming. Given that most "reviews" are crypto-sales pitches for this or that product, this is helpful to the struggling neophyte.
Thanks! I actually shoot rather than just talk about it. Beware anything you see on CZcams. See www.kenrockwell.com/tech/2-kinds-of-photographers.htm
Thank you for this great review. I decided long ago that variable aperture lenses are not for me. I never shoot auto ISO.
Thanks!
Wow great review! I'm stuck between the Z5 and the Z6ii. Something is telling me to go 6ii, that in 3 years, it will still be a top body. But $800 less I could put that into better lenses. How would you look at it? More capable body or lower end body but paired with top glass?
I prefer Canon. I don’t suggest anyone buy into the Nikon system. In three years all of today’s digital cameras will have been forgotten. I prefer the Z5 from Nikon, but way prefer the Canon EOS RP overall, or for action, the Canon EOS R5 or Canon EOS R6. Thanks!
@@KenRockwellTV i dont understand how wd you prefer RP over Z5 coz RP doesn't have 2 card slots, IBIS, better ergonomics, 4fps instead of 1- 1/2, better Dynamic Range..?

Excellent review thanks.
Which one would you recommend for family kids an a little landscape travel? Z5 kit lens or a6400 18-135? They are the same price in greece 1199€
The 18-135 is much more useful than the 24-50. Go Sony, but not before you look at my favorite the Canon EOS RP www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/rp.htm. Not sure how well RP tracks focus on moving kids; the 6400 might be better.
@@KenRockwellTV well i worked an rp and it seemed just ok. About 50% in focus for kids. As of low light what is the best camera in this price range?
I like your post about the Z5. May I know your thoughts about comparing the D780 versus the Z5? Which one has the edge in image quality?
Same tech image quality. Difference is in usability, frame rate and your choice of viewfinder - which are totally opposite. See my d780 review www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d780.htm and also see it on CZcams.
I remember shooting TriX at EI 3200 using Acufine or Diafine to push it. Grain like walnuts but that was incredibly fast, EI 3200. So, loosing a little detail on the clock....haha. Still better than it was.
Actually, we never lost detail with faster film. We had loads of grain, but the detail was there and even enhanced perceptually by the grain. Modern noise reduction is what makes crazy hugh ISOs possible, but at the expensive of detail. This is one of the magic of film: the fact that we still have all the detail along with the grain. I'm surprised some new-age nuts don't advocate shooting digital at high ISOs without noise reduction. Thanks!
Very Knowledgeable, Thank You
Thank YOU!
Hi Ken, good to watch your review on z5 before i deciding to get one. Fyi, i just got my z50 in last month. If i were to get one fx body, what do you think of z5 as compared to my z50? It is just a small upgrade that not worth it and better to stick on z50? Pls advice thanks.
*just fyi the reason i picked z50 previously was because i have several dx f-mount lenses and use it with ftz. Now thinking to get an ff body.
The Z5 will require all FX lenses, otherwise its a waste of time if you use the same DX lenses from your Z50 on it. It's a very similar camera; I don't understand all the camera buying on your part; what's wrong with your Z50? The Z5 id very similar. The Z50 is best with the tiny kit 16-50mm and maybe the kit 50-250mm and you're set for everything.
@@KenRockwellTV i understood z5 need fx lenses. What i meant was, if i were to buy z5, definitely i will buy some fx lenses, i will not use dx lenses on z5. I understood that z5 will automatically do the crop. In fact, i have some other f-mount fx lenses which i used ftz on z50. So, my thought was, if i plan to buy another body which is fx, is it worth to buy z5 since i have z50 (if you think the profile is almost the same as z5) or shall I go for higher like z6 or z7?
When the Z5 crops to DX it has much less resolution than the Z50. Don't do that. Why buy more stuff? I don't know what you're trying to shoot, and honestly I prefer the Z5 for its better controls and smaller size than the older Z6/Z7 II. The Z5 isn't very fast; but guess what, the AF of the Z6 II and Z7 II is also pretty bad even if they run at higher frame rates, so I'd stick with the great Z50. If you want a better camera, it's smarter to step up to the Canon EOS R6 or Canon EOS R5 than throw more money into Nikon. It's not 1983 anymore, Nikon hasn't been the top pro camera since the 1990s..
Finally watched this review, great work. For the price, would you still say Canon? I honestly don’t see anything for the same price that gives that kind of features.
It’s all personal. I prefer Canon’s RP for less money, but if the Z5 has some particular feature you need, go for it. Do think ahead however - Nikon today is failing and will never have as many lenses or the customer support of better, healthier brands like Canon or even Sony. Thanks!
I think the same as you. I do prefer the Canon R6 over this Nikon Z5. BUT, in my case that I am on a budget and want to start shotting with Full Frame for making a living, I think this Z5 is the way to go. No everyone can START with a camera that is $2,500. The Z5 if half of the price and represents a great value for the money. I would like to upgrade to Canon though once I start making good money.
Go Canon. Long term or short, it’s a better camera. I prefer the EOS RP for less money www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/rp.htm thanks!
@@KenRockwellTV but doesnt the z5 have more features over the rp? genuine question, im looking for my first full frame mirrorless mostly as a stills workhorse but decent 1080p 60fps video is fine
More features mean nothing if the basics are not there. Features do not ensure great images. So don't fall for the features manufacturers try to push. Does it have a good sensor? Does it have reliable AF? How does it perform with the glass you have? If you need it to work with an adapter, does it work flawlessly?
@@alwynsmit3546 even Z50 with its crop sensor has better AF and image quality than RP, stop this fanboy nonsense, Z5 is essentially better camera than RP and is edging Canon R also.
@@Blitz_Shorts why, just because you say so? Nikon is behind Canon & Sony on AF. Fact. The only fanboy here is you.
Hi Ken,thanks for your review. I am in between the Canon EOS rp and the Nikon z5. Autofocus Is important for me,so how these two compare? Do all AF-S lenses works well adapted?
AFS lenses work great on FTZ. I haven’t compared AF, both work great but Z5 may - or may not - be faster. EOS is probably smarter. Real question is Nikon is far more expensive.
See also www.kenrockwell.com/tech/comparisons/nikon-vs-canon-vs-sony-full-frame.htm
Be warned that a good portion of the lenses Nikon sells today are not AFS and will not autofocus on the Z5. See www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/mirrorless/lenses/ftz.htm With Canon, everything since 1987 work perfectly on an adapter. I prefer the Canon system given the choice. It’s so much more than just camera specs.
Ken was Mr Nikon for 20 years then switched to Canon, well qualified to comment
I still shoot both all the time, but prefer my Canons since my 5D MK III of 2013. Thanks!
Question for you on time exposures for this camera, and Z6 and 7IIs as well. I do a lot of time night exposures. I get that if you are by the camera you would hear the shutter closing. But lets say you are at a distance from the camera, doing light painting/flashing how can you tell the exposure is over? On my DSLRs I will often get close enough to took through the viewfinder without touching it to see if the mirror is still up. Does the EVF come back on, or can you program it to have the image display which is temp at best? Trying to determine how you can tell short of touching the camera in case the exposure is not finished.
Good luck! With no tally light you have to guess.
By far the only camera guru who doesn’t push the agenda of buying a new camera or lens. Quick question though, i am new to family photoshoots and event photography. I have a canon M50, and i want to upgrade to full frame camera. Should i go for the Rp or Z5? I believe the canon R lens are superior and here to stay.
Thank you!!! I prefer Canon. Love the RP www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/rp.htm for its practicality and while you’re at it, the RF 24-105 STM or 24-240.
RP is not good. I had the RP and quickly got rid of it. It’s lacking in many areas compared to the Z5. DPReview compared the two check that out for an unbiased opinion and they didn’t even mention the Z5 has in body image stabilization and RP doesn’t. Z5 $999 right now until end of weekend.
@@livejames9374 I am skeptic about the autofocus hit rate!!! Coz canon and sony are way ahead in terms of accuracy.
@@avikmajumdar1791 Canon is ahead with R5. Sony is ahead with the A1. Nikon hasn’t released cameras in those higher segments yet. However the Eos R, RP, A7iii and A7Riv are not better at AF than Z6/Z7 ii especially after the recent firmware updates. When there’s complaints about the Z af it’s always with full auto (camera picks subject) continuous tracking of fast moving small subjects like birds, but guess what RP, R A7iii etc aren’t great at that either. I shoot professional sports with R6 and Z6ii. Both get great results. Eye af for both are same and super accurate. R6 is better with full auto tracking when I don’t want to think at all, but that camera also has drawbacks - worse battery life, worse plastic like build quality, I find Z lenses to be better than RF, for AF-S single point Nikon is more accurate. Z series has better files (color, dynamic range etc), ergonomics yet people only talk about AF.
Nice review!
Thanks!
The fact you can use cannon lenses and other different brands with adapters cause of the large z mount is fuckin cool to me. The raw files actually look better at high isos especially after a little noise reduction the jpegs seem to be smoothed out a lil more because of the camera reducing noise
Yes, but be careful. Adapted lenses never work as well all the time as camera brand; adapters are always part Sceince experiment. Thanks
Now if they'd just release a FTZ adapter with a focus motor
A few months ago you steered me towards the Canon RP. As good as this Z5 is, the RP wins except for the having one card slot... since I'm not a camera for hire, one card is all I need. And yes, I will use your B&H link. Thanks.

Ok, we get it. You like Canon.
Yup. It’s not 1985 or 2007 any more. Thanks!
Hi Ken, I’m just wondering which Canon camera you’d recommend for an entry-level mirrorless at a similar price point (
I LOVE the RP www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/rp.htm ! Thanks
Also, I'd just like to point out my appreciation of the detail you pay to ergonomics; ergonomics are *everything* to someone who uses a camera for extended periods of time. One of the main reasons that I don't shoot Canon is because of the vertical orientation of their front dial. This seems like an insanely trivial point, but I've shot on Canon cameras just enough to know that using that front dial for any length of time is absolute murder on my mildly arthritic knuckles. If I'm paying attention to how uncomfortable my camera is, I'm not paying attention to capturing photos. No bueno.
The Z50, and to a lesser extent the Z5, definitely seem more geared towards one-handed operation which makes them ideal to use with compact lenses that don't require a second hand to support the weight of the lens.
Bingo! Thanks.
Well you are the professional with those pics. Us amateurs need more training. 😂
Practice makes perfect, check out these articles I've written: www.kenrockwell.com/tech.htm
So Ken, if I switch to mirrorless, which camera should I use? Cheers.
Depends on what you want to do, but go Canon. THe RP is the best compact, and the Canon EOS Canon EOS R6 best for sports and the Canon EOS Canon EOS R5 best for everything www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/index.htm
I like reviews that show how the camera operates. This is one of them. About the evf, does it look that noisy to the naked eye?! My Canon G1X Mark III exhibits some noise in the dark but nothing like what I see here. I’m looking at the Z5 as a stabilised and affordable camera to which I want to adapt my EF mount voigtlander 20mm and 90mm lenses. The 90mm which also doubles as a macro with a screw on lens would benefit from the ibis. Although don’t know to what extent. And yes I’m a Canon user who’s looking at a Nikon. R6 is overkill for me and expensive right now. Don’t know wether Canon will release a more affordable stabilised camera this year. Keep up the good work!
Correct: the Z5 finder is HORRIBLY NOISY in low light, far worse than the Canon EOS RP. They’re all fine in good light. Get the RP, it costs less and is a better camera. Thanks!
PS - in camera stabilization isn’t that effective. I have tested them and at best you’ll only get two stops of improvement.
24-105 is coming to the Z line, at some point. Hopefully it will be in the batch of 12 lenses Nikon is due to announce in 2021, although it will be a n f/4 I think, at least to start... they might do a 2.8 but I heard it was going to be an f/4.
Why waste time waiting? Geeze, Canon has a slew of RF lenses and with such a small budget as Nikon slowly continues its exit from the consumer camera market you should upgrade to Canon. All of Canon’s new and used 24-105 work flawlessly on Canon’s Mirrorless. So what is the question? @@KenRockwellTV Now that's its a good 2 years later from when this video was posted, perhaps maybe doing an update. It seems that Nikon has come a long way in 2 years. The Zf, Z8, z9, (Canon also released the same crappy 24-50 lens that Nikon did). Not to mention Canon has pretty much locked out most third party lenses or lens support (minus those with dumb adapters). So an update overall would be interesting to see.
Ken can you give your opinion D750 used or Z5? Coming from the old D7000. I have issues with the D7000, even after fine tuning and sending the body back for repairs.
Are the issues your own error? If so, new camera isn’t likely to change anything. The D750 and Z5 are night and day different. The DSLR handles much faster; choose it for moving subjects. The Mirrorless is only for things that hold still and takes much more tine to set up snd adjust - but you can see everything in the finder. If you already have lenses that may change your ideas. Avoid DX lensss on the d750 or Z5. They each use very different lenses. If you go Z5 that’s a completely different system from the D750 and you should consider this as a good time to upgrade to Canon because you’ll wind up buying everything new for the Z5 - so may as well do the same for Canon does this help? Thanks!
@@KenRockwellTV Thank you for taking the time to reply. I have been shooting with Nikon since 1984. I am 100% sure it is not user issue since when I use other cameras (Friends D500) I do not have this issue. I even took the D7000 to Nikon for service as you can clearly see the focus point in the Nikon software for the image but the focus is off. I had subsequently bought a Sony A6000 awhile back to use instead as I no longer had confidence in the D7000. I mainly have FX lenses with only 2 x DX lenses. Since I don't have too many DX lenses and more FX based ones I am leaning towards a FX body. Yes after watching your videos I understand I would have to get the Z mount lenses. The only thing is the EOS RP might be due for a replacement. Yes I am not convinced that I should be going mirrorless since that would make all my F mount lenses useless. I know the D780 is very decent, but I think the D750 will be more than enough camera for me. I was also considering the D810, but the D750 would be newer. Yes your reply helped solidify my thoughts.
Thank you so much for the Wonderful review ! One question, you really don’t see any difference from image quality perspective given z6’s backlight illuminated over z5?
Nothing significant. Manufacturers are always portraying negligible marketing features way out of proportion to get you to pay more. Look at my reviews at www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/mirrorless/z6-ii.htm and www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/mirrorless/z5.htm where you can download test images at every ISO and see for yourself. Thanks!
I use the Z5 with (very) old Nikon (and Canon and Olympus OM and Zeiss ) so called vintage lenses using cheap contactless adapters for about 50 dollars and the camera works well with all those lenses (about 10).
Swell! Thanks.
We had this conversation before and we settled with the d780 for my Nikon manual glass and everything my dad left behind with me the 50mm and 105mm and I have 50mm with autofocus as well. But now that I’m watching this.. I’m actually considering the z50 I thought the z50 was a crop but it’s actually full frame and maybe 🤔
I can just get a z mount 50mm instead, it’s probably better to be native mount than just try and use my old lenses from my dad because it’s nostalgic and I’ll cherish it forever which is what I had in mind but by all means I’m open to considerations
I just love Nikon for portrait and canon I use for videos and landscape photography but there’s something I love about the Nikon portraits
Would love to know your two cents
For my Nikon all I would need is a 24mm 85mm 70-200mm and 50mm that’s all I need, could probably replace the 24mm with 24-70mm even the 85mm too that’s what my requirements for mirrorless
Then I need to find a solution to use my old school 50mm and 105mm just for memory of my dad, leaning towards d780 to replace my d700 it’s a shame they can’t be used on the new mirror less
My mistake I typed z50 I meant to type z5
Stick with d780. Dads lenses will not work well on any Z camera today. Thanks again!

No. It’s the same thing.

Hey Ken, it's me again and I have another question. How worse is Z5 low light EVF in comparison with Z6? Some people say there is huge difference, but I have never seen the one from Z6.
I forget, see the two reviews at KenRockwell.com where I go into all the details. It also depends on how low is your light. If it’s light enough to read a book they’re all fine. If it’s outside at night where you’d use a tripod, most Mirrorless are pretty bad - but few people shoot like that.
Thanks @@KenRockwellTV. I do not worry too much as I already bought Z5. I was just curious to know how bad is Z5 EVF in comparison with Z6 that makes people so upset :) Thanks for your review and responses.
I am still torn between this and the Canon EOS RP. I feel like I should go with this one, but something is telling me I may be better off with Canon in the future. What to do???
Get the Canon. See also www.kenrockwell.com/tech/comparisons/nikon-vs-canon-vs-sony-full-frame.htm it’s all the little things that make it obvious.
Ken has lost his mind. Nikon isn’t going anywhere and RF and Z ecosystems are comparable. RP is not good. I had the RP and quickly got rid of it for the R6. The RP is lacking in many areas compared to the Z5. DPReview compared the two check that out. Z5 dominates in all categories and they didn’t even mention the Z5 has in body image stabilization and RP doesn’t. Z5 $999 right now until end of weekend.

Thank you for your kind review, while I know the Nikon Z6 on 2nd hand market is now at the same price as Z5 in my area, I still may pick up Z5 just for the dual card slots and the mode dial user accessibility alone. If I missout the top LCD, I can just pick up my D750 again since I'm in no way selling that beast. I was about to pick up Canon RF's ecosystem but I just can't move on from SOOC images from Nikon, it's just something else for me, I'm just a hobbyist with modelling photography sidejobs and not in any way professional. In the end I have a D3300 if I want to have fun and not worry about weight, D750 and Z5 if someone decides to call my service. I still keep my F mount too, 105mm f1.4E optics is just out of this world. Once again, thank you Ken.
All fun. I do prefer Canon and obviously we all have our preferences.
I see quite many times that you said the benefit of the built-in flash to the photo. The easiest way to compare if the flash wasn't fired is you SHOT the same pic flash off and show them besides. Easy!!!
Easy, yes. Thanks!
Hi Ken, great! Thinking to move from D750 to Z5... (or Z50)... I have some doubts about 1,7 cropped 4k video... I would appreciate your kind poit of view... Many thanks
I use iPhone for video, interchangeable lens cameras like these are too Klunky for me. The z50 has slower autofocus than the d750, be careful.
@@KenRockwellTV very kind of you
I know you like the EOS RP, would the Z5 be a better camera if you want to have the ability to use to largest range of lens from both canon and nikon? and esp for someone who has a decent collection of nikon lens (even if the ftz adaptor doesn't work that well for older nikon lens)? I have a D750
I don’t encourage adapting lenses. Ideally pick a brand and stick with it for bodies and lenses. Over time you will eventually wind up buying all the native lenses to replace whatever you adapt, so unless your d750 lenses are the latest afp or afs lenses that work well on the FTZ (full explanation at www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/mirrorless/lenses/ftz.htm). Adapting Canon lenses to Nikon is silly, if you want to shoot Canon lenses well then. Get a Canon camera. Adapters seem interesting online but never work as well as just using the native mount lenses. Thanks!
@@KenRockwellTV Where can i find that Megadap Nikon F to Z adapter? ;). I got about $3k worth of nikon EF lens. Many of them are of the non built in autofocus motor tyoe ;( as well as several manual only lens...
There is none yet. Forget older Nikon af lenses, the megadap adapters that do exist don’t work all that well in reality.
Or more correctly, forget Mirrorless with older af and afd lenses. Use them on a Nikon DSLR on which they work soooooo much better.
You said that when using time shots there was no warning light. But I noticed that the green memory light was flashing when recording. I would have thought you would be able to see it at night? Once it stopped time's up .

I recommend Canon. The Z5 is nice, while the ergonomics of the Z6, Z7 and z9 are inferior to Canon. Ergonomics are critical in getting the camera out of the way and letting me just get the shot. Thanks. See also www.kenrockwell.com/tech/comparisons/nikon-vs-canon-vs-sony-full-frame.htm

If you want to spend $2,500 then the R6 mark II just came out and is state of the art. www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/r6-ii.htm DSLRs take the same pictures, but will most likely depreciate faster when you go to sell them in a few years, so the R6 II will likely cost less to own over time. The R6 II is great for everything including sprts and action. The RP is less than half the price but not fast enough for action. If you’re shootong only portrait and landscape etc then check it out as full frames best bargain www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/rp.htm
@@KenRockwellTV do you think in a low light situation, eos rp and r6 ii take the same image? I guess iso, ibis systems and developed sensors add image quality over rp.

Stick with the Z50 and 16-50. Feeling like a toy makes it more fun and you’ll get better pictures. @@KenRockwellTV which Canon would you recommend in the same price range as the Z5?
I love the Canon RP. Super inexpensive. The Z5 is very nice, too, just part of an inferior system from an inferior company (Nikon) who dumps production overseas to save themselves cost and has much poorer support than Canon. See my real Z5 review at www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/mirrorless/z5.htm and RP at www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/rp.htm the Z5 is great, just not a fan of the nikon system today.
@@KenRockwellTV the one thing that I wish I could have is a full frame with a pop up flash. Even though it’s weak on the Z50 it’s very convenient. Switching to Canon after 40 years of Nikon would be a big change.
@@maeu59 Yes, mirrorless is also a big change. Nikon has never been a leader in mirrorless, and is no long a leader as it was when I bought into it 40 years ago. Today, they're number three. I'd consider Canon before getting too stuck in Nikon Z. If you do stay back in Nikon, I love my tiny SB-400 flash www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/sb400.htm
And what can someone buy to start in macrophotography or landscape photography in that order? And not a Canon. I dont like Canon. I was looking a the Z series, but ill like to ask, cause ther are few Z mount lenses and correct me if am wrong there is no Z mount macro 1:1 lens yet.
Correct. Nikon is now a small company with very limited resources and few lenses and not likely to have many new ones. Therefore you’re stuck with F mount macro lenses and the FTZ adapter. See www.kenrockwell.com/tech/best-macro-lenses.htm#nikon and know that only FX and afs lenses will work best on the FTZ and Z5. Get the 60mm f/2.8G or ideally 105/2.8 VR. I use the 200/4D every day, but the FTZ won’t work properly with it.
Nice review! I was looking at upgrading my D7000 to a D750, but then started down the rabbit hole of mirrorless. Seems like this Z5 with a Z 24-200 and possibly 14-30 wide angle, along with FTZ to work with my FX AF-S lenses (70-300, 24-120) along with my Nikon speedlights. And still keep my D7000 as a 2nd body. That would be the extent of my budget, so not a big deal that lenses are currently limited.
Nikon does a nice job on their website listing their future lens releases (because they are obviously behind in mirrorless lenses) and by the time I might want to upgrade in a couple years they'd be available. I'm not crazy invested in Nikon, but still nice to be able to have the option. I also have a couple DX lenses, which I can sell along with a 80-200 AFD that would not be AF compatible.
Too many options LOL for a consumer hobbyist. I do admit that while I'm sure the $600 12 lens 50mm f/1.8 is stellar, I do wish they had a smaller, cheaper $200 6 lens version like Canon, since I'll need to replace my 50mm AF-D...
Z5, 24-200 and maybe 14-30 Is a great idea. Forget the FTZ; your other lenses only duplicate what you would have with the z24-200 and z14-30 for the most part. Your existing flash works great. Also consider the Canon RP, RF 24-240 and RF 14-35/4 www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/rp.htm and www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/lenses/24-240mm.htm and professional www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/lenses/14-35mm.htm combo.

The RP and Z5 are both very small. Canon makes a exceptionally light 24-105mm STM lens vs Nikons shorter lightweight lenses www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/lenses/24-105mm-stm.htm
Ken, Excellent review, and your stated findings track with my impressions. I took advantage of Nikon's 'Buy and Try' for 30 days option and have been using the camera for several days. Having gone back and forth between nikons and canon DSLRs, where i find Nikons really excel is the accuracy of their matrix metering, and the wonderful dynamic range of their Sony sensors (compared to Canon's past sensors). Canon's exposure seems to bounce fluctuate more with contrasty scenes than Nikons or Fugis, obliging us to sometimes take several exposures before we have one 'on' enough.
I'm heavily invested in Canon L lenses (used with canon 77D) and want to step up to FF but was trying to avoid paying $2,500+ for the Canon R6. With the Z5, i'm finding its not-great single-point focus acquisition in low light is frustrating and could be the deal-breaker. (I do a lot of street photography at night). The camera and this lens do feel really plasticky...I found that disappointing. I do miss the flip out screen (found on Canons), for when i shoot verticals and want to be able to compose on the LCD, etc. etc. So, guess i'll be saving my pennies for a Canon R6. Reassuring to hear you've come to some of the same conclusions. Craig
All the dealers I use all (www.kenrockwell.com/links.htm#stores) offer at least a 30-day 100% cash-back trial period on everything they sell - I'd never use Nikon's store. I prefer the Canon EOS-R system, so yes, I'd send back the Z5. I'd order the Canon immediately (Canon EOS R6 in stock at www.crutchfield.com/i-rKRWcNEW/p_280R6105F7/Canon-EOS-R6-Zoom-Kit.html) so you can compare them both in your own hands. Look through the finders in low light; you'll be astonished at the huge difference between noisy Nikon and clean Canon. Thanks!
@@KenRockwellTV ken, Noted, thanks for your additional thoughts. I could have gone on, on what seems not great with the z5, but will leave it with what i said. It seems like such a far cry from their rock-solid feeling dslrs i have used in the past like the 5600, 7500, and 750. Craig
can i use a sigma art 18-35mm lens on the Nikoz Z5 with the FTZ adapter?
Maybe, maybe not. You’d have to try it yourself. Sometimes off brands just don’t work; every lens is different. If it focuses with a screw head on the mount driven by an in-camera motor, it won’t autofocus on the Z5. If the lens has an internal focus motor, it might. It’s hard to say as not everything works as we’d like when you mix brands. Thanks!
Needing to upgrade my D600 at some point to mirrorless full frame the inability to shoot with manual Nikon ai/ais mount glass with proper exposure preview... because the FTZ adaptor is holding the aperture blades open all the time (like an SLR/DSLR with an OVFnot an EVF)...was almost a deal breaker...!!!!! and then with a little head scratching... I realised that there is a solution... although unfortunately it means spending even more money (around £45 on top of your new camera and FTZ Adaptor noooo) on a K&F Concept Nikon ai to Z Adaptor.... with manual control of the aperture open and close lever.... to get the same experience that we all Love of using manual lenses mounted on any other mirrorless camera....!!!!! Just Please tell me that it doesn't treat af lenses in the same way, not giving you real time aperture and exposure preview (instead insisting on acquiring focus wide open like a SLR/DSLR and resulting in a really disjointed experience with no real advantage over an OVF) which with the ability to compose the entire shot in the viewfinder before taking the exposure is the very strength of mirrorless cameras that we've all been waiting for and enjoying (with fuji etc and manual glass) for the past ten years. Would be Amazing if Nikon could put a constant/manual aperture mode into the next firmware for the Z5 Z6 Z7 and Z50 to make it a much more seamless experience without having to spend an extra £50 on a non smart adaptor in order to use Manual Ai/Ais and D glass.... or a mode to get the same experience and full realtime image preview with f/g mount lenses.... Be really grateful if anyone could chime in on how the Z cameras behave with F/G and Z lenses in this regard as this could also be another deal breaker as well.... even though AF speed might take a hit by not being able to focus wide open and then close down for each individual exposure.... Be really grateful for any advice or if any one else could chime in and shed any light on this..... Till then I'll have to stick with my Beloved but ageing XT1+ speed booster and beautiful selection of manual glass as a mirrorless counterpart to my D600.... and poss hold off on a Z50 as a mirrorless stopgap to be able to use all of my Nikon af - F/G glass.... till I can afford a Z6 as a replacement....Thanks Chris :)
Forget manual lenses on the Z. Instead go Canon with any basic $15 Chinese adapter. It’s still a pain; if you shoot these lenses stick with a DSLR. Full details at www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/mirrorless/lenses/ftz.htm
You mention Canon quite a bit, but the Canon equivalent to this seems to be the R8, which has only one SD card slot and an electronic first curtain shutter. The Z5 has a mechanical shutter, electronic first curtain, and electronic shutter.
This isn't like cars, where different makers all make very close to the same thing. Nikon and Canon are quite different. The Z5 is old and heavy (670g), having come out in 2020. R8 is a much smaller, just 461g, (⅓ lighter!) and more compact camera and came out only a year ago. The Z8 has no mechanical shutter as those have been made obsolete by the newest sensors; mechanical shutters are a hold-over from before sensors could read-out all the data to let them work with flash; R8 has both first-curtain and fully electronic shutters. Hey Ken, you said manual lenses do not work well on this camera. What did you mean?
You have to open and close the diaphragm manually for focus and then to shoot. The finder gets dim at small apertures because the camera has no data coupling to the lens to have any idea where it’s set. Program and shutter priority modes don’t work. There is little EXIF data and the list goes on. In short, manual lenses work way better on old cameras but the Z system has left them to rot.
Thanks@@KenRockwellTV. But all other mirror less cameras work that way, not only Nikon. So should I understand your comment "they (manual lenses) do not work well on this camera, forget about it" as "forget about mirror less camera for manual lenses"? :D
Ken Rockwell, if anything, the point of going mirrorless is to LOSE WEIGHT. This is a whopping 675g as opposed to 485g in the EOS RP. Why would one pick this up over an actual DSLR or over an EOS RP that weighs only as much as a Fuji X100V?
Beats me! People get lulled into a false sense of expecting old lenses they already own to work well on the FTZ adapter and get sucked into buying more of this Nikon gear rather than getting with the program and taking this chance to upgrade to Canon. www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/index.htm
The fact that you can get an adapter to mount other brands of lenses is Not sad thats a plus. The front plate is metal too not just the lens mount.
Using non-Z or AFS lenses never works very well; that’s more of a hobby for the misguided, but if people want to, you can put any sort of old lenses on these. Thanks!
@@KenRockwellTV not only old but any cannon or Sony glass as well which from I understand is only possible only on the z mount because the huge mount allows people to make adapters for it. Nikon mirrorless AF is poor. I suggest going instead to Canon who has great AF today. With all due respect to Mr.Rockwell... I wanted to write this for a long time, as I see it in most reviews here: *no wonder the images are really sharp... at f/10 or thereabouts* . It would be more interesting to find out if the particular lens+body combination can deliver artistically pleasing 3D pictures with the aperture wide open to at least f/3.5 (what kit lens allows). I clearly agree that the composition and overall look is much more important, but for the sake of justice even very old glass and cameras can show significant sharpness at narrower apertures, so that could hardly be the sign of new bodies\lenses peculiarities. All in all, most of us dig good quality bokeh! 😊 P.S. Thank you, Ken, it's always a pleasure to watch and read you! Cheers for Russia!

Z50 is great for photos and videos and i think its has better af than z5
I see in the jared polins video that even thou theres a face/eye it doesnt focus in the face/eye using the z5 but the z50 has great af in the review of jared polin photographing a moving kid.
But the z5 has dual card slots
And im planning to use this camera for 3-5 years with potraits, events, and etc.
Z50 is great. I don’t use these for action; but both work well. Depends on what lenses you plan to use with them. Z50 should be used with the 16-50 and 50-250 DX only. If you plan to use FX lenses with it, then get the Z5.

The evf in the z5 is very laggy and noisy
What about the nikon z50? Is it the same?
Is the nikon z5 evf usable in weddings using a flash?
thanks for answering ken
Ken what white balance setting do you use?
AUTO 1 usually. See www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d850.htm#usage under Auto White Balance which explains it all (D850 uses the same system). Thanks!
@@KenRockwellTV Thanks for the quick response! Ignore the trolling haters!
Ken, The nikon z5 outperform the canon rp: better dynamic range, max 8000 shutter speed, IBS ....
So? None of that matter if you miss the shot because the of the Z5's handling. See also kenrockwell.com/tech/diq.htm Thanks!
@@KenRockwellTV the Z5 handles better too
