    • @nigel.w
      @nigel.w Před měsícem

      @@farlo90 Unlikely to be on the same scale, but there are already parts of Melbourne and Sydney that have been taken over by extremist elements who entered legally. And I note Aussies used to say the scale in Britain 50 odd years ago would never happen, but it's already way worse than that. It will have a lot to do with who's in Government both nationally and locally going forward. Australian police certainly used to be robust. I can't speak to all Aussie police forces, but I have seen them be both overly robust and fearful of the mob, just like British police. Unfortunately, it's all a roll of the dice as to who governs and what they do. Indonesia could easily turn into Australia's own 'North Africa/Near East'.
      But I agree it's unlikely to get as bad in Australia as it is in Britain already. Then again, all Australia needs is a Tony Blair type to get into power, and then a succession of weak governments, and it could easily be worse than it is now in Britain in as little as 10-20 years. Britain is almost unrecognizable compared to 30 years ago. It's even very discernibly worse to how it was three or four years ago.
      Sadly, Australia and NZ aren't decades behind anymore. And of course, NZ hasn't got a clue...a 25% population increase in just 10 years, and more than three of those years were Covid years with almost no people allowed in, even citizens. Most from a very different demographic than previously. And of course, after three years they can get NZ passports and enter freely Australia, and I'm pretty sure that's what many intend to do. I have an NZ passport, and as bad as it is in the UK, I'm loathed to go NZ, or Australia (which I know pretty well and almost moved to many years ago now).
      Britain (London, Birmingham, and Scotland in particular) is pretty hard to recommend, that's for sure. Income levels for professional people aren't good anymore, either. No point Aussies coming here anymore for an OE.
      If I hadn't spent most of my life abroad wishing I were in the UK, I'd certainly be looking for greener pastures. Unfortunately, the grass isn't always greener elsewhere --although without a positive outlook it's hard to see the wood for the trees and easy to turn heaven into hell. I'm loathed to leave again, which would have to be my last move at my age, but pretty sure the life I dreamed of in the UK isn't possible anymore. I used to think Britain was the best place in the world to live...as long as you have plenty of money. Not sure anymore. Also, not sure where you won't have to deal with similar problems, now or in the near future.
      However, my current thinking is to stop crossing the street hoping things will be better over there. Although it has to be said that I've never really considered physical safety before, or faced discrimination to such an extent that it threatens my wife's and my abilities to earn a living, but those two issues could force me to rethink everything. Never lived in London until three years ago, and things are pretty bad, IMO. But again, I'm not sure running is the answer.
      Anyway, I hope you continue to like living in Australia! Given Covid, it's still very new for you. Hopefully you will prosper, and keep healthy and safe!
