  • In 2004, a fashion breakthrough saw Muslim women claim their place in the pool.
Aheda Zanetti, the Australian designer of the Burqini, hoped that by adding a little bit of extra material, her swimwear would encourage Muslim women to participate in sports and swimming.
The Burqini quickly became and worldwide phenomenon and has since appeared in Sports Illustrated's coveted swimsuit edition.
Join Aheda Zanetti, Yusra Metwally and Held Elhami as they discuss their journey back into the pool.

I am not Muslim, I am Christian. But I like that it stays secure on their heads in the water, and I like how modest it is.

I hope other women who love to swim, but our not comfortable in a swimsuit, will start wearing this - I hope this trend will spread to all nationalities and religions - regular women, who want to be more covered up, or just protected from the sun, can now enjoy this sport - amazing - cheers

This is great for modest women to go swimming or play sports.

I had only heard about burkinis fleetingly maybe last year and completely forgotten about them. Thanks for helping the conversation resurface!

I love them because my skin cannot be in the sun whatsoever, I have a terrible reaction. It's nice to have more stylish options.

Damn it’s depressing how a once free and liberated Australia has changed…
