Soilwork are the absolute kings of choruses. This one is so soaring and majestic that I can't get enough of it.

Bjorn "Speed" Strid, the singer of this band is one of my all time favorites...Amazing range, beautiful melodic voice and powerful harsh voice too. Maybe this song wasn't a great example of his vocal ability (aside from that high note at the end) although I really like this song! Some old school, 00's stuff by them maybe are better examples of the melodeath sound!

I never thought there was a difference between melodic death & "melo"death. I think it's just a cool way to say melodic death haha. Honestly I believe it's all one sub-genre. Interested in the long song reaction! You still gotta check out In Flame at some point, even though melodic death week is over. Cheers!

Damn it's a great riff. Melodic Death Metal is a very broad term as of now. I guess back in the day it was regular Death Metal plus Iron Maiden type of harmonies but evolved quite quickly and today it's kind of an umbrella term for "distorted stuff with harsh vocals". I mean, Insomnium, Soilwork, Amorphis and Children of Bodom are usually thrown in the same genrebag.

Often I consider In Flames, Scar Symmetry and Soilwork to be all of the same cloth more-or-less of the really polished Melodic Death metal era

I love that you mentioned the happier tone of this music.
Recent styles like this have turned a major leaf in their messaging. It was normally about personal struggles, dealing with depression, abuse... You name it. Usually negative topics, emotional outpourings.
Now however they tend to speak to their audience directly and try to create happiness and strength within US. Soilwork has fully adopted this and their current lyrics are inspirational. They teach us to believe in ourselves, to find our own strength and be willing to sacrifice for what we believe in. I love this change myself.

Yeah, this is one end of the melo-death spectrum: "radio hit songs" with a slight "deathy edge".
Soilwork has done much "deathier" songs within the spectrum but I suppose many like this "light stuff".
Think you summed things up very well in that analysis!

I'm bit disappointed that you've not included Be'lakor within this week. For me it is one of the highlights of whole genere. Although most likely you won't be delighted with vocals they can still can take you for quite a journey with their musicanship and compositions. I would recommend The Smoke of many fires, or their newest stuff - Hidden window, but almost every track by them is worth checking out. Maybe if you will have an Aussie week sometime in future it can be a part of it?

First heard this band back in 2005 and instantly fell in love. This band is just straight up different than other metal bands. Their album that came out in 2013 is a double disk masterpiece and will always be my favorite, but they just haven't made a bad album in the past 20 years. These guys need more reactions in general as their very talented and Bjorn is a monster on vocals.

"stålfågel" means "steel bird". "å" is pronounced like "oh". It's interesting how close it is to German "vogel" for "bird" as the "v" is pronounced like "f".

Interesting. Very open vowels throughout that word, which I guess lines up with that å being repeated. Bird of steel works into the blimp idea from the video too but now I'm curious how the lyrics fit in.

Soilwork has a unique story, with a lot of changes in the lineup, albums with different styles, production, inspiration but somehow they have kept their own sound, always pushing themselves into something different.
This song in particular is a kind of commercial but it defines the present of Soilwork, nevertheless, their past albums, specifically "The Living Infinite", demonstrates what Soilwork is capable of... But I don't know if that album is in another genre and not in the melodic. It would be interesting your opinion on it.
The singer, Bjorn Strid, is one of the best singers in metal, he has this amazing ability of sing as high as the final part of Stalfagel, and also he can sing and scream in a medium low range, listen to him is something awesome. And of course the rest of band complement perfectly to Bjorn

"Melodeath" is just a portmanteau of "Melodic death". That's it.

I went through Soilwork's discography back in the day. They've always been an extremely solid band. Haven't heard this track so it must be a newer one, and it's solid as always. Nothing super original, but the riff and vocal chorus are both instantly memorable. This is definitely softer and more accessible than their older work, though I don't know how much of that is just because this was intended as a single. Either way it doesn't matter much because I wouldn't object to an entire album of songs like this. Guess I need to catch up on their recent albums.

Amazing to think that Death Diviner, released in 2021, is one of the bands best songs after 25 years in the game. This band is ageing like a fine wine.

Would absolutely recommend checking out some of their older material that got so many into melodeath.
Imo, Figure Number Five is their best album, not a bad song on that one. Overload, Rejection Role, Light the Torch... those are probably my favourites but they're all great.
Or their heaviest material, which came soon after from Stabbing the Drama (the title track is pretty dope).

If you return to this someday (melodic dm) may I suggest some older In Flames, like "Episode 666".
Also bands like Mors Principium Est, Parasite Inc., Omnium Gatherum.
If you like to hear that melo death Soilwork, I'd say go back to their previous album "The Ride Majestic" or even in their 2003 album "Figure Number Five"
