  • I've been asked what type of gold paint I use in my journals. I always used Reeves, until it became hard to find. From this test, my favorite is either Liquitex Basics gold acrylic or Artist's Loft acrylic Old Gold. The little bottles...well, not so much. You will see.

The "thickness" of acrylic paint has nothing to do with how good the coverage is. Clear acrylic medium can be as thin as ink or as thick as glue paste but, if it doesn't contain enough pigment & metallic particles, it will look like crap once applied to a surface. In this case you literally get what you pay for so, the cheaper the paint is, the less metallic pigment it will contain.

@@Flux_One Thank you so much for your comment. That makes sense as well. I am using the paint for paper crafting, especially creating pages in journals, and putting two coats never occurred to me as I am trying to complete a page in one sitting for a journal entry. I am looking for the best coverage with one coat. However, your comment really has me thinking about how spectacular a page could become with two coats of anything. Thanks again, Lynn

I've used sally hansen color foil nail polish usually the chrome and the gold for various art projects because it has a better mirrored finish than any paint I've been able to find and it's pretty inexpensive it can be brushed or used in a sprayer without clogging it. A little tip I've learned through the years is if you use a metallic silver or chrome under coat it helps gold paint pop and have a more mirrored metallic finish

Often there would be a primer color under the gold or silver, or other metallic paints. Painting gold paint directly on white is not necessarily the best option. Doing a quick search, here is one bit of advice I saw:
"We recommend the use of earthy yellows and reds under gold, particularly the red and yellow ochre colors. Under silver we recommend blue and black for creating the most desirable undertones."

It has been a while since I had the Reeves paint. I feel like it does have a shine, but I cannot say 100% because it's been a while. I've been wanting to do a repeat of this testing gold paints. As far as any type of finishing method and being able to speak to that, I really am no expert and have no idea what your best choice would be. I am also not sure about adding any sort of sparkle. I'm sorry I can't be of more assistance. I use my paints for paper, fabric, and making journals. Thanks for watching!

Great video! I don't do the same type of art, but was looking for more opinions on Artist Loft. I've heard people rave about their metallics (side note- I wonder who actually produces them for Michael's?). I've recently tried a handful of the metallics in Liquitex as well. I'm not usually a huge Liquitex fan (at least in the Basics line), but I was actually quite impressed with some of their metallics- nice pigmentation and good concentration of Mica as well. I don't know if you ever mix your own or have uses for other colors, but I absolutely loved their iridescent white, iridescent black/graphite, and their iridescent mixing medium- with which you can make any color (and thus far, when I've used it, it's performed absolutely beautifully with just adding the metallic effect and otherwise remaining transparent so the color you add remains true). I do know Liquitex makes silver and gold mixing mediums as well. I haven't tried them, but really want to now.
In the Folk Art line, several of the Treasure Gold metallics have become really popular too. I'm just starting to use them. I have the golds, but haven't tried them yet. Some of the other colors have been beautiful though like the Antique Bronze (which is really more of a purple) and the Fire Opal. Some other people have recommended DecoArt in the comments, which I love as well, especially for their golds (at least the 24 kts). They are just beautiful. Some of their other colors are less impressive though in my opinion. Hope this helps! Thank you for the awesome comparisons!

You really need to shake the metalic paints a lot more than you done here.
The metallic (metal) settles to the bottom far more than reg paints. Sorry, just not a fair test here because the more metallic the more it needs shaken first.
Shake the crap out of them before you use it, then test again.
You'll see a big difference in most if not all these paints.
Especially shake very thin metallic spray paints you may use. Those extra thin spray paints need shaken almost constantly while being used because the bigger the metallic the heavier it is & the thinner the paint the less volume so the flakes sink much faster. Also why they run so easily spraying anything vertically.
We were taught to shake it anytime your at idle.(while waiting for next part, spinning parts around on our fixture etc..).
Im a retired professional hand sprayer from Guardian SRG Global (One of the largest New OEM automotive trim parts supplier). You point at most any part on a new car I sprayed it both Inside/out!
So shake it baby shake it!...lol

You should ALWAYS ground with red/brown colour before the gold, never direct on WHITE. The thin gold paint may not be the worst, even the best as it keeps the original surface. Just do it two times. Gold paint needs to be seen from different angels, not just from above. So this video shows nothing about a REAL result.

Gold paint is only for illustrative work or crafts, you wouldn't use gold paint to paint a still life, not a realistic one anyway. If you were painting a gold object you wouldn't use any gold or metallic paint.

The only limits of any medium are those self imposed, and yes metallics can easily look garish in a heavy hand or a concept gone sideways but they can also look fantastic when juxtaposed with proper colors and contrast.

I totally believe that!! I make junk journals, so sometimes I’m going for a look that I can create without too much money. That said, Golden is awesome!
I’m hoping to do this test again, and I will take your advice to heart.

Not cheap, but rather shopping to get the best bang for my buck. Most of my paint goes into grungy junk journals, so I want something that is a good application for what I do.
