Review of various brands of gold spray paint for gold color quality:
Chase brand Champion 24kt Gold - This has been my “go to” gold spray paint for years. Michaels arts and crafts store doesn't carry this, but I used to always get it from AC Moore arts and crafts store, before it went out of business. It was the most expensive gold spray paint they carried, so I assumed it was the best without ever doing a comparison. But for what it costs, it’s not that great. This is certainly better than the $3 - $4 gold spray paints you can get from hardware stores like Home Depot but not worth the $10 price point. I would describe this as dingy gold or dirty gold.
Design Master brand Gold Medal - This has been rated as the best gold spray paint by so many youtubers who use a lot of gold spray paint. Design Master has different types of gold spray paint and most people seemed to like the "Gold Medal." This has the appearance of a brighter gold because it is a COOL gold color with a greenish hue. It is good but certainly not the best gold spray paint, so I would not recommend it as my top choice.
Krylon Metallic Gold 1701 - This is a rusty, dark gold color. It’s actually more of a bronze color than gold color, so I don’t like it.
Krylon Metallic Gold 1706 - This is also a brighter gold, but it is a WARM gold color with a reddish hue. It’s nice but I would not recommend it as my top choice. This would be my second choice for warm tone gold.
Ace brand Antique Gold - The color is very dark, and I realized that it's because I got the “antique gold” color paint. This seems more like old bronze and not really gold-colored. It is one of cheapest spray paints you can get from a hardware store, but it is also the ugliest. I would not recommend it at all.
Sparvar brand - The gold color is quite nice but this paint color is discontinued. I’m still doing a review on it because folks might be able to find some on eBay. It’s got a tinge of red and is not very bright, but the color is not bad at all. It's nice, but I wouldn't recommend it as my top choice.
Zynolyte brand Speed E-Namel - The gold color of this spray paint is close to that of Champion 24kt, but it is a bit darker and definitely an inferior quality spray paint than Champion 24kt. The price point reflects that. You can’t find this spray paint in hardware stores nor in arts and craft stores, but many ONLINE vendors sell this in multipack. The price you would have to buy a single can would not be worth it. If you buy a case of 6, the price comes out to be around $4. I wouldn’t recommend it unless you need to be budget conscious and need to purchase several cans of gold spray paint.
Krylon Short Cuts Gold Leaf - This is a stellar gold spray paint! It is absolutely lovely! It is a brilliant, clean gold color, and has a nice sheen to it. It is very beautiful. This costs $4 - $5 for 3 oz., so the cost of this spray paint is by far the most expensive! If you do the math, that’s about $16 - $20 for 12 oz.

I just had to return to this vid and say THANK YOU soooo much for taking your time to do this! Bc of your side by side comparisons, I was able to identify better which gold effect I wanted to create. Thank you for doing this experiment and sharing your findings :) For small objects, like toys or ornaments, I like to use a non-paint item to get a beautiful gold color - Winsor & Newton's calligraphy ink in gold. The color is gloriously beautiful, almost like real 24K gold. It looks a bit orange in the bottle, but trust me, it is the most beautiful gold color when you paint over a surface with it. It is pricey at almost $10 for 30 mL, so I only use it on small objects. Even using it to touch up an already gold painted object will make the gold pop.

I saw once for a few seconds you shook one can but I'd suggest you shake the heck out of those cans for like a minute before you're using them, and shake while your spraying, also use longer sweeping motion. Depress and release spray before and aft sweeps, over lap slightly.

I like 1and 6 the best! More of a darker gold and thats what i am trying to match on my chrome crystal pendant lights to match some other gold ones I have!
I've always found having a bright chrome works best with any gold.

Thank you for this video. but when I go online to read the reviews on amazon for Short Cuts-gold leaf...more than half of the people say that it is not the 24 karat gold color of the can cap...they say it's more of a lighter 14K to 10K gold color and show pictures of the comparison...I'm looking for the deeper 24 karat or antique gold look would you say that the short cuts is a true leaf color (24k)? thank you!

I would get a can of number 8 and 1 can of any cheap gold pain you can find. Use the cheap paint as base, and then use number 8 as the final, top coat.
How about if you were doing decorative strips would you suggest gold spray paint Or decorative gold tape 🤔
Hmm, that would depend on what the strip is for, what material you'd be spray painting or putting the tape on, and what material the gold tape is made out of.

Super helpful and saved me some money for sure lol I was just curious tho, this was just posted a few months ago, and a few of the cans (Design Master, Chase) have the most recent branding/design, but some of the others (Krylon & Ace) look nothing like what i see available today, super old fashion. Are you just in a different country (Im in the US) or are they old cans that you've had for a while? No shade, just curious! :)
Hi Kenna, you are TOTALLY RIGHT that a lot of the spray paints had been sitting in my basement for years! That's why I posted photos of what those same spray paint cans look like now (the current design for those exact colors). I'm a hoarder and keep things around forever until I remember to use them. Unlike brush on paints that come in cans, which get hard and are not usable after they've been sitting around for years, the spray paints were totally fine!

Which one can be used on metal jewellery??
Hi Riya, I wouldn't recommend spray painting metal jewelry, except maybe earrings. The reason is that spray paint on rings, bracelets, and necklaces that are constantly rubbing against skin and other objects will come off. Because earrings just dangle, spray paint will probably stay on those for a while. I would definitely pick #8 as the prettiest color.

@@riyatripathi11 If the plating has come off but you don't want to throw away the jewelry, you can go to a jeweler and get it re-plated. That would be the best solution. A really cheap solution would be to spray paint it gold and then spray on some lacquer or put some clear nail polish on top of it, but it won't look like polished gold and it will NOT last very long before the gold paint comes off. But it'll look better that what you have now.

Make better swatches more even strokes maybe use tape to make them sharp. Put them next to each other separated buy a piece of tape. Also do them on a white cardboard or something white. Focus the camera on them for a bit, don't move the camera so much.
