  • Every Paraglider WORST Nightmare! My epic paragliding experience turned terrifying when I accidentally deployed my emergency parachute from the front container. Luckily, I prevented it from slipping off my harness and fully inflating. I managed to secure it tightly between my legs in my pod harness, thus avoiding a potential disaster!

Stop using front reserves from a sitting position where your arms are right next to where they could get entangled...
Honestly the whole fad of the cocoon position is terrible to me, if you fall you're getting paralyzed, if your legs get stuck you're getting paralyzed. I'm good on flying in paralysis position. Face forwards is objectively better control, anyways. That's like riding a motorcycle backwards and putting your feet first like it's Akira or something. But the reason your head is first is because it's better control... Guy Martin proves this on a skateboard by going face first instead of feet first. In aeronautics it's only going to be exponentially more important. Face first cocoons are step up from the lounge position, but still lesser than freedom of motion in my book because there's always a delay to your reactions/preparing to land/hoops to jump through.

If you have a proper harness for example Advance Lightness 3 it almost never happens. The rescue is fixed by rods not by pins. I flew pg for 22 years.

Back when I was writing Technical/Safety articles for an American PG publication I spent a day deploying PDA reserves at one of my inland soaring sites (while wing was fully flying), the trick is as the reserve (below & behind you) starts to deploy (and so starts to rise to the same level as the pilot, LET your paraglider start to 'downplane' .... as your wing approaches 45° (forward & up) add increasing amounts of both brakes.... once BOTH reserve (behind) and wing (forward) steady around 45° the pilot has a remarkable level of steering (via the wing/small alterations of the ballance of brakes) ... Of course if (rear mounted reserve) has NOT deployed (deployment bag still shut) with GENTLE care it can be lifted back up and onto your lap...!
NOTE: the biggest risk (front mounts) in this case is (wing still flying) the reserve deployment bag opening to one side of the pilot... in that situation I'd immediately B Line Stall the flying wing👍

Sounds like reserve chutes for paragliders/hanggliders need completely redesigned.

Did a very deep penguin launch once, with a front container, where even my helmet touched the ground, safe to say the front container got dragged along the ground too quite a bit 😅 once I was airborne the front container was half opened flapping in front of me , gave me a good scare, super lucky it didnt fall out all the way.

Happens with rear mounted reserves as well. I got away with that one. Reserve fell out when the weight came off when I landed :o|

Had to look a few times before I saw it. Your reserve came out of its container?

Yeah I accidentally knocked it out of it 😬💥

@@AddictionHappiness It's a terrible design if it can be triggered by accident. Never heard of ANYBODY being afraid of pulling their reserve, though. Most hanggliders don't use reserve parachutes, you realize, right? Must be specific to hanggliders who use poorly designed reserves (I'd argue the ergonomics of your silly cocoon doesn't help anything). Paragliders with this issue must stem directly from the seated position only.
