We almost lost this wonderful person. Thank you to all the people who came together to save this author.
Imagine a world where people are threatened and attacked for their writing--oh, wait... that's the world we live in. 😞 Mr. Rushdie is an inspiration.
👏👏👏💯💯🙏🙏
His famous ex-wife (married young woman) has different opinion. A pompous person how he married a USA citizen to gain USA residency and then got rid off her.

New Yorkers restoring my faith in humanity. Thank you to all the bystanders who did not just stand by.
Good people making me misty. Positive vibes from New Hampshire, remember to be kind to each other and yourself during these trying times.
He got attacked in New York too don't forget that.
Humour beats hatred ever single time.
True
They're not mutually exclusive. The victims of hate are often victims of derision as well.
@@vvevv88Ah, but many of our best humourists are among the abused. It’s also a method of coping with the hatred.
@@vvevv88 I do not consider belittling someone at their expense humour, that is bullying.
Absolutely 💯
Another beautiful interview with a remarkable human. I notice Stephen fiddles with his wedding ring during emotional moments. That’s lovely too. Being in australia - where we have witnessed two horrific public knife attacks in as many days- it resonates to hear a survivor’s voice. Peace seems far away in the world right now. Be safe everyone and share love, not hate.
🙏❤😊
That was lovely. There is more love and effort to love in the world than hate; I guess it's just not as profitable for some and since we can't all meet and take time to get to know one another we have our communications and images of ourselves manufactured for profit. We see how far some are willing to and have gone for profit so let's not fool ourselves about the danger of fear based greed.
💞❤
But you guys don't have the extreme mass shootings that we have due to lax gun laws that NOBODY understands
Americans would rather sell their souls to the devil, than give up their guns. And politicians in the government have, for money
LOVE > HATE ❤
Sir Salman Rushdie is such a great man. He’s living proof that goodness, integrity, and intelligence will always overcome hatred, delusion, and ignorance. Thanks to him and thanks to all the people who helped him.
That dry chuckle-oh, bless him for finding the strength to remain capable of such humor and peace.
“Well, let me just ask you, can you imagine a funny fanatic?!” ❤❤❤❤❤🙏 This is a question for ages to come. My utmost respect.
These guys must have never seen South Park. I wouldn't say they make it hilarious, but they do make the kkk humorous to say the least.
@@jiblitin1520
True Lies & a few others came to my mind also.
@@jiblitin1520 Isn't that different from what he's saying though? Surreal, satirical depictions of fanatics certainly can be funny, the point is a fanatic has to be so "serious" by definition he cannot at the same time be a jokester especially not making fun of his own fanatism.
I have a friend who was at the venue and saw the attack - she travels out there a lot. Said it was a very traumatic experience but she also said after seeing Rushdie on 60 Mins last weekend, she was very admiring of his resilience.
With two knife attacks here in Sydney couldn't agree more with Mr Rushdie's sentiment on the humourlessness of fanatics.
Laughter is the best medicine, whereas hate is toxic.
🎉🎉🎉
What a courageous man!
"Love wins in the end."
well said! He is a true inspiration.
When he said those words I looked at his eyes and saw that truth radiant in his face.
🙏🙏 Humor, love, kindness,, things that bring us together... will overcome those seeking to divide, and pit us against each other... eventually 🙏🙏

glad he Mr. Rushdie was saved. bless his heroes!
'Humor is liberating,' Salman Rushdie.
Poor man, he has been through a lot just for doing his job. May good stuff come his way from now on.
For being who he is: a writer, an artist, a philosopher... It's more than just a job; it's who he is & what he does with his thoughts, his life. And thank goodness, huh? Wow... And it's amazing & wonderful when people can be who they are & do what they love & make a living doing that, isn't it?! 👏👏👏 Yes, I also wish all good things for him!
A hero saved by other heroes❤
I couldn't pull my eyes away from this interview. It felt so raw and so honest.
It’s a blessing that all those people stepped in to stop that attempted murder. His upbeat attitude and saying humor is liberating is inspiring. Thanks Stephen for a great interview
Grateful his attacker didn't silence him. ❤
Rushdie is so funny, but Colbert is so focused on his interview that he sometimes forgets to enjoy his guest. Wonderful observations by Rushdie. Humour and bigotry do not go together. Laughter brings us closer. He's very thoughtfully prepared his comments - prepared to speak positively about comedians. Clever guest who knows how to win people over. I appreciate this man's honesty. He has risked his life for it.
One of my favorite old French films is called Le Schpountz with Fernandel. There's a line in it that goes something like " God gave us laughter to console us for our intelligence."
Have always loved that line and thought.
Salman Rushdie, I have been a lifelong fan of your writing and read all your books. Thank you so much for sharing your mind with us.
What a beautiful-and mirthful-perspective ❤ Thank you for sharing.
Have you ever read J. Krishnamurti? My friend says he talks in circles but if he would take the time to read as he does his bible he would truly have his consciousness altered. The journey truly is about discovering WHAT you are because that's what was created or is being created, then you get to source. Consciousness is controlled by the amygdala and hippocampus and not being aware of how these survival tools (fight/flight) (pleasure/pain) operate in the brain could lead to nuclear annihilation. Evolution is calling.
« Le rire est une chose humaine, une vertu qui n'appartient qu'aux hommes et que Dieu, peut-être, leur a donné pour les consoler d'être intelligents. » Marcel Pagnol
@@lindadbse1919read J. krishnamurti in my late teens, it really changed my perspective and attitude towards life. If I had my way, I’d make it required reading in schools. I didn’t think he wrote in circles, though some of it could be shortened or summarized.
Eloquent and erudite speakers like Salman Rushdie are a rare treat on The Late Show.
Idiot audience trying to look for a laugh line at every opportunity, though. Annoying.
Such an incredible man. Spend some time and read all his books. And all his friends books. So incredible that I have a first edition of his most famous work signed by him.
Rushdie has been one of my great heroes for many years. I was absolutely devastated when I read about the attack, remember exactly where I was, and what I was doing. Thank you to the men and women who got him to the hospital within "The Golden Hour," and to the trauma surgeon who saved his life!
It feels so good to hear about people helping out iin such a traumatic situation. Too often we are only hearing about our inhumanity to each other.
Thank you Mr. Colbert for having this brave man on your show. I appreciate your intelligent interviews.
A story of Peace against evil. Your name! Peace. How absolutely beautiful. You are.
Bravo 100 times over to those heroes who helped save Salman's life and showed their compassion and bravery. Amidst all of the war and fighting going on n our world, these heroes loving empathy shined through.
Thank you for everything Mr. Rushdie
This, folks, is why it's important to learn CPR, First Aid and other emergency lifesaving skills. You never know....One day you think you're about to hear a book talk. Instead you end up saving a prizewinning author from a madman.
The one skill that is great to have that you never want to have to use
So glad that Salman Rushdie survived. Angels surrounded him on that day. He has more in this lifetime to share with us, including humor.
What a beautiful man and person! would have liked to have had a much longer interview with Stephen- tad short- he is graceful and funny to listen too!
read the book. its really good!
So happy to see Salman Rushdi alive and kicking .He is a wonderful being❤
Great to see Mr. Rushdie after his life threatening ordeal and that he still retains his sense of humor. ❤ And I sincerely hope the Chautauqua Institution staff learned their lesson about providing security to their guest speakers, especially to ones that have received death threats and attempts on their lives from radical religious extremists.
Mr. Rushdie survived because his audience was full of intelligent, caring, professional people who were ALREADY there for him. Imagine if it had happened at a Trump rally (or similar event)...seriously.
The man named his book after his 'almost murder' weapon. He have balls of st-titanium.
Rushdie said this about the title... "This book is my knife. My way to fight back with the truth."
"The pen is mightier than the sword." Truly. He makes much more influence on the world with his words than this other ever could, & much better, too!
I remember the pure anger I felt when I first saw news of Rushdie's attacker. Something very troubling about the way some people go out to destroy others without remorse.
Thank you for this interview. I wish it was longer.
Out of all the people Stephen has interviewed, this is the one I am most jealous of. I wish I could talk to Mr. Rushdie. He is a personal hero of mine. To stand up against the world as he knows it and speak his mind no matter the outcome. He is so brave, witty, and intelligent. I would love to meet him. Not to mention, he's a great writer. LOL
THANK YOU to all of those beautiful people who helped keep the international treasure alive. He has so much to teach us. Just look as how positive he still is. How can I do that?
For real peace you have to "disturb the peace", when that supposed "peace" you are disturbing is not peaceful for everyone.
What an amazing human and author. Read his stuff if you haven't. His use of language and fantastic imagery and humor will take you on a wild ride. And you won't have to leave your couch.
I've long been an admirer of Salman's since the 80s when the threats were made against him. I can't fathom how someone would attack this dear sweet man. When I first heard the news of the attack I literally stopped what I was doing and reflected on the sheer cowardice of the act and what a f**k'ed up world we live in at times. So thankful he was saved and still with us. And props to all those who selflessly leaped to his aid.
Our hearts hurt for our sisters and brothers still trapped in repressive countries. So glad Mr Rushdie is recovering.🙂
God Bless Salman Rushdie!
Thank you for your courage. We will not be cowed!
Semper Paratus.
Brilliant analysis of humour and evil. Thank you Salman Rushdie.
Love his take on humor being diametrically opposed to the nature of fanatical hatred, so well said 🙏 Such a brave, kind soul, immensely glad he is still with us and for all his insights he's shared with the world 🙏
What a delightful man. Humor is nature's medicine. As is the compassion and help he received from those who saved his life.
Thank you for your courage! And thank you to the people who saved him!!
I remember learning about this man a few years ago in my high school English class. When I heard of what happened shortly afree that I instantly made the connection and was horrified. Thank goodness we didn’t lose this man he’s a terrific writer and person.
I am not at all surprised at the actions of the people on hand to listen to Mr Rushdie that fateful day. 50+yrs ago I was introduced to Chautauqua Lake. The folks living or visiting there were always kind and friendly and tough as nails. Mr Rushdie's attacker didn't stand a chance. They stopped him, held him and got him locked up, when they could have just killed him! Like I said, kind, friendly, and tough as nails! My favorite kind of people!😊! The world is a better place with Salman Rushdie and the people who saved him in it !😊!
"Puritanism is “the haunting fear that some one, somewhere, may be happy"
.....U.S. philosopher Ralph Barton Perry delivered the Howison Lecture at the University of California, Berkeley in 1925.....the quote is often attributed to H. L. Mencken...or.... George Jean Nathan or Nellie McClung or Beverly Gray or John Cleese
😂
@MilesBellas I loved this quote, I'd never heard it until he used it
Love his sense of humor, in spite of everything.
In utter shock. Well done Stephen.
I remember the days when Rushdie was first put on a list to be killed, and pre-internet pre-social-media, U2 were making his situation known as they toured so that he would be known and famous so that such a bright light were upon him that no one dare harm him. It's incredible to think that all these years later someone got anywhere near him to do this sort of harm. Thank goodness he made it - he continues to be a much needed reasonable and rational voice in a world gone mad.
Wish you all the best Mr Rushdi.
What a rare treat!
« Can you imagine à funny fanatic ? » 😁
So glad he is still among us.
There have been few interviews that I enjoyed as much as this one.
Glad you are feeling better and have a loving wife that stood by you. Your sense of humor is in tact and your comment about fanatics and puritans is great.
What an AMAZING HUMBLE man😊❤
This was such a good interview.
Steven Colbert was humble, and reverent. His laugh was genuine. That was beautiful to watch.

Salmon Rushdie is one of the worlds best writers! Hands down,
I found, after years of dying during cardiac arrests, that what happens to us, when we die, is determined by what we think will happen. My first experience, a long one at 16,, was a heavenly one with corporeal-looking people, but over the years, the material part faded and the last time, I was in cardiac arrest for a period of time, it was just me, as a life-force, communicating telepathically with another life-force.
What did you telepathically say to each other?
@@GGoAwayy I said life was really hard and it said, "Hold my beer," lol. I could give Job a run for the money with the things I've been challenged with starting with 31 years of active cancer and treatments, heart failure, losing my husband and soulmate of 50 years, and the list goes on and on.
Basically the near death dreams are just that. Dreams. Which means like any other kind of dream, it's your own brain mashing together recent events with other things you remember and sticking them into a blender to come up with a narrative. So if the last thing you remember before going unconscious is that you are in trouble and could die, then your brain throws together a dream that pulls from your own notion of what is supposed to happen when you die. People don't see heaven because it's real. They see heaven because they expect to and their brain is playing their own beliefs back to them.
@@dunbar9finger Well, my first "dream" showed me what my future would be and it all came true though I did get the sex of one child wrong due to his long hair. I would get more updates as time went on which would all come true including the one that told me I would survive my metastatic breast cancer, and I have, though it has involved 31 years of treatment.
Yeah… I’m one of those idiots who hated him without even reading any of his work. Not my proudest moment. Glad he is ok.
Thank you for being open to thinking, seeing, understanding differently & now being able to speak out about it. Hopefully, it will make a positive difference. ❤️🩹✨️🕊

Those solemn interviews are refreshing coming from favorite host. Intelligently & respectfully done Mr. Colbert. H. L. Mencken wrote, "Puritanism -The haunting fear that someone, somewhere, may be happy." He wasn't the first, but I think this is the quote SR was talking about at 4:00.
It's such a deep tragedy that we almost lost Rushdie to a fanatic's blade, stemming from the intolerance of fundamentalist Islam. I'm grateful to the people who stepped in and saved him. I love his observation that the core conflict is between those with a sense of humor and those who lack one.
That's what a graceful human being looks and sounds like.
What a shallow interview of a brilliant mind
Such an impressive and expressive person. Love . . . ALWAYS wins ❤️💙
Wonderful writer and wonderful human.
A great man and a great writer. The best of humanity and the worst.
Mr. Rushdie, you are an inspiration to EVERYONE at a time when our world is consumed with conflicts, wars and pathetic, spineless gutless "leaders" who won't do the right thing. You have stood up for peace and freedom of expression - and paid a huge price since 1989, including this most recent attempt on your life. That you have maintained a sense of humor throughout all of this is testament to your strength of character. You put SO many people to shame...May God bless you, Sir...
I am so glad that this story ended with love and life winning against hatred and death. Unfortunately, this is not always the case: in 2019 an assassin managed to kill the Mayor of Gdańsk, Paweł Adamowicz, right as he was telling crowds of people about sharing love and solidarity with other people. It took place during a huge nationwide charity event and was a horrible shocking antithesis to what happened to him seconds later.
Wow, he is so fortunate to have survived. What an amazing man. Prescient dreams do happen and now he knows to pay attention to some dreams. I’ve have a few prescient dreams but the only one I remember these days was deeply disturbing and involved the slaughter of innocent bovine calves.
Fantastic interview Stephen 👏👏👏
