  • Many people don’t realize that you really need to have the right set up, environment, and weather for these big guys. They start out small but they grow quickly and they grow to ginormous proportions. Make sure you do your research before you get a tortoise and adopt don’t shop!

    I've got a female that I got from someone who wanted me to remove her from their property. I've had her 3 years and don't know the age, but she's about 13" long. Lives in an old gopher tortoise burrow. I'm in Florida so it's a pretty good environment for keeping a sulcata outdoors.

    • @TillyGTheTortoise
      @TillyGTheTortoise  Před 3 lety +5

      Ok I checked and I’m currently using Repti Calcium from zoo med. there are two types one with vitamin D and one without vitamin D three. If your tortoise has access to daily sunlight then you wanna use the one without D3 which is what I use Hope this helps.

    What are "other predators?" Like what? I just acquired a young female and I worry about a hawk snatching her from the back yard. Are snakes any kind of problem? At what point do I no longer have to worry about racoons/opposums? Her shell is about 6" long. Do iguanas pose any problem? South Florida here. Thanks

    • @TillyGTheTortoise
      @TillyGTheTortoise  Před rokem

      Yes, you definitely want to watch out for any type of hawk or creature that could carry away your little tortoise so you want to wait till they’re about 5 pounds or so and are too heavy to fly away with. I’m not sure what wildlife you have in your area but you have to watch out for possums, raccoons, coyotes etc. until they are Tilly G’s size and can protect themselves. Hope this helps.

      @@TillyGTheTortoise That does help so THANK YOU! I've been wondering about weight to help guide me relative to when she'll be safer outdoors. She's a pampered queen at the moment. A neighbor found her in the garden and was frightened of her (hard to even imagine) and had me "remove" her. Fortunately, I had one as a kid and had only good memories and experiences of a tortoise and just picked her up and took her home. Oddly so far, she does not eat any of the beautiful grass in my yard and only likes Romaine lettuce and will nibble at a carrot. I tried opuntia cactus yesterday and no luck, but, I've only had her 7 days. She seems very healthy and her droppings seem healthy as well. The weather in S. Florida is perfect for them but she'll be a mainly indoor dweller until I'm more confident of her safety. She does get supervised time in the sun out in the yard with me and since I live near a waterway, I do see hawks flying above and don't want that to be a problem, so I'll be mindful and cautious. Thanks for your time, experience, and wisdom!

    • @TillyGTheTortoise
      @TillyGTheTortoise  Před 3 lety

      I highly recommend that you adopt rather than shop and don’t buy a tortoise there are so many tortoises that need a good home just like dogs in rescues and fosters, tortoises also need a good home. So check with your local nonprofit organization and look for tortoises that are up for adoption through rescue organizations.
