Thank you very much for your feedback on this video and on the Black Dyke Band. Glad you like it. It was important for us, fans of this ensemble, to highlight and share the history of this Brass Band. Thank you !

I had to submit it to him to watch. (Yes it was me, no credit due) You did a wonderful job putting this video together to tell the world about Black Dyke, Cooper and let people experience Brassband in general. Pleasently surprised it reached you!
      Much love from the Netherlands!

Totally cool! Black Dyke is always a pleasure listening to. The music was composed by Paul Lovatt Cooper...he also composed a piece of music about 20 minutes long for our fanfare orchester, very beautiful.(but very difficult to play... haha)

Paul Lovatt Cooper has composed a lot of great music. Fire in the Blood is one of my favorite pieces.

Brassband music is great and the Black Dyke Band is the best.
I have some of their music in my Spotify playlist, but also from several other bands. One of my favorite pieces is Trittico for Brass Band by James Curnow, because I played an arrangement of that piece when I was in fanfare band (yes, that's a Dutch/Belgian type of band).

Major Peter Parkes used to conduct Black Dyke (amateur band) and a worldclass military band (professional band). Someone asked him who was the better band; he said Black Dyke (the local amateur band) were much better in standard.
Staleybridge band is the oldest band (over 200 years) and Besses O' the barn band' are one of the older ones too. Besses was an amazing band until recent times.

I play in a brassband my self if u want to see some of the contest u should watch some videos of the british open or the europian brass campionship where all the best brassbands come to play 1 piece of choice and 1 piece that’s assigned and whoever plays it the best wins. Most of the time the pieces are verry technical and fast

A brassband is most likely the most quintessential of British musical sounds. Nothing in my opinion evokes the landscape and the people of Britain as much as a superb brassband. This summer I finally got to see the Black Dyke Mills Band and they did not dissappoint. You asked about how you can “join” them and the answer is I guess you have to asked. When a position becomes vacant they either already have someone in their sights or will audition several for that position. Where it is quite common to see orchestra players play in several orchestras / bands at the same time within the brassband world you don’t see it and it is I believe because of a competition rule that you only can be part of one brassband. This does mean that all of the top players from various other bands eventually end in the top tier brassbands making it harder for those just below that level to actually cross that threshold but once in a while that does happen.
If you want to have a bit of an idea of some of the history of brassbands you should watch the movie Brassed Off (with a very young Ewan McGregor). Except for the lead actors most of the band is actually the Grimethorpe Colliery Band who also recorded all the music heard on the movie. The movie itself is set in the times when lots of coal mines were about to be closed without the prospect of new jobs becoming available.
