"But if you accidentally hit it, it is ok, because Kurt did."
This is gonna be my senior quote
yeah.Because of nirvana and kurts easy yet awsome playing on guitar i got into playing guitar back in 92 when before they got famous i was discouraged thinking i had to be a guitar virtuoso. Thanks kurt. Thanks nirvana. Thanks Justin.
Tell that to my wife đ
was it your senior quote?
Justin, I have no words to thank you for making lessons on earlier published books! You are the teacher number one!
"I am a little bit of a Nirvana geek." No way man, there is no such thing. Haha.
I've said it before Justin but I'll say it again! you and Marty have made my life of learning guitar a pleasure and if I ever get stuck with tabs or patterns I always turn to you 2! Keep up the good work đđ»đđ»đđ»
Why is this Justin chap such an absolute legend? Why does he give away all this fantastic material for free? The very best of the internet right here!
Great rework on the video, thank you! Great job on explaining the additional notes and open strings strums, I had to learn that the hard way some time ago :)
After 2 weeks of playing a new song of yours everyday I've gone from a embarrassingly bad strummer to being able to pick up this pattern just by ear! That was an awesome feeling. Thanks for your help. I'm definitely buying your book. Ps if you ever get the time it would be cool to do every song on that album. I don't know anyone that doesn't like that CD!
great tutorial. Unplugged was my fav album of all time, id love to see more tutorials from that set.
Thanks, Justin,
You are quite literally the best CZcams music teacher BY FAR! Superb knowledgeable, superbly-produced videos, superb everything. I always come to you first and never have to go elsewhere to learn, you cover all angles, address how to play the song at all levels of difficulty. I could go on and on describing all of what I appreciate about your channel. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Iâm such a better musician because of how much I have learned from you over the years. Iâll never be able to thank you enough for that. May this message of love and gratitude find you well. Most sincerely,
gemineyez lizi
I learned the power chord from you a few years ago but always wondered what Kurt was playing in unplugged. Thanks for he updated video. Although it sounds like just power chords on the album version.
You make that sound great ! Good vibe and your voice hits it well for the mood . Thank you you buddy
thx justin! youre great teacher!
The most helpful in depth lesson I have ever been given over a song. Blessings.
how about "dumb" for the next lesson, I really like that song. But that's just a suggestion, and thank you very much for the lessons I really love your videos :)
yaay more nirvana please :D
Fantastic lesson, thanks mate! Great point about the open string strum too as I reckon thatâs what gives the tune that dark n dirty feel we all loved. Cheers
just wanna say that your an awesome teacher and one of the best guitarists on you tube for teaching music.. I've learned tons of songs thanks to you.. keep up the good work.. lol
Excellent lesson/cover Justin. Thanks for another good one.
Man! you just helped me get another big breakthrough, Thanks a lot! Great work
Perfect! Great lesson as always Justin. You are right on with the barre chords being Sus4 chords sometimes. Few know this. He even does this on "Smells like Teen Spirit".
Best teacher on youtube!
Hell! Yes! Now that's what I'm talkin' bout!
Great tune. Great lesson. You the man Justin!
thank you!! i didn't like how EGDC sounded, so i looked up some lessons so i can get the exact sound. this helped alot, especially the strumming pattern, thank you!!
Love this channel and the way you teach!
TY.,so glad i stumbled across ur channel.its never a waste of time watching ur vids!
I was like this is easy...until B flat
how do you even do b flat
@@tomheywood3419 Late response but I'm just learning this song this week.
For b flat just use your ring finger and kind of powerchord with an extra fretted note. Tab would look like this: x-1-3-3-3-x.
@@mtaylor6745 thank you so much
Just keep playing it over and over... that's my advice...the power chord version's aren't that hard anyway...
Or in power chords, use A string, 1st fret power chord shape.
Awesome! I hope you'll do couple more of nirvana unplugged in the future :*
You're an excellent teacher, Justin.
I love your channel you taught me guitar through this the first song I learned was working class hero
Thanks for the great lessons.
a natural teacher player listener...much gratitude
Thx Justin Great teacher !
Pretty good dude. Nice work
You are right on singing this!

The way Kurt Plays open chords in between power chords, for me, makes it actually easier to navigate than if it were just power chords all the way. Going from C5 to open G to Bb5 is like he's laid out an itineary on the fretboard with lots of shortcuts. and it sounds amazing.
Awesome lesson. Can you explain how you mute the strings?
The strumming pattern is a bit challenging for a beginner, but itâs fun to learn!
As a beginner Iâve been learning some âeasyâ songs that have some rhythmic challenges like A Horse With No Name, Ring of Fire, Working Class Hero
Thanks for explain Kurt's way. Actually that unusual G is used in Back in Black by AC/DC .
I remember seeing someone being critical of Kurt's abilities, "he wasn't even the best guitarist in Nirvana"
The answer someone gave was "So what, Dave Grohl wasn't the best drummer - your point?"
+TheBasedProphet aka NU GOD When a post begins with "Um"....
+TheBasedProphet aka NU GOD Bye, troll somewhere else.
I'm a moron?! Okay, boy!
"um" Right the issue here is you never got what I was saying in the first place, which is that out of the three members of the band Nirvana Dave Grohl admitted that Kurt cobain was a far more skilled and technical drummer and had actually arranged the drum sections in songs in which Grohl played when he first joined.
I wasn't talking about the plethora of previous drummers the band had but if i was that would still apply since Dan Peters was among them. Worth pointing out thatr dan peters wasn't kicked by Cobain as you claim but left due to him being in the at the time far more successful band Mudhoney and had to move on with them.
Now please, Wigga y'oll, leave us big boys to discuss music.
nothing distresses me more than deleted comments lol
Aye, he did a reply to this today as well.
He totally missed what the comment was about. It was about the fact that Kurt Cobain was a very technical and accomplished drummer himself. Grohl was good at what he did and he has a very distinctive style and by all accounts very good indeed.
Arguably Grohl was to drumming what Cobain was to guitar - excellent but not by the book.
LOVE your lessons! This is Jamie from #musicmansladies I see myself progressing slowly but surely. Thank you for ALL of your lessons, they help immensely!
cool!
I'm not sure if this was stated or not but if you want to play along to the unplugged record tune all the strings down a half tone. It's mainly noticeable for about a girl and this song in particular
Hey Justin, I love your lessons and singing. One question, what is the guitar you are playing in this video? I love the sound and looks beautiful.
Pretty sure he usually uses a Maton brand guitar
For the first part of the intro/verse on beats 2 and 4, are they muted strums, or non-strums?
They sound like muted strums, but from what Justin is saying it seems like he's referring to them as non-strums.
Yeah it's not super clear in the video but muted strums on beats 2 and 4 of first bar, and then another muted strum on beat 2 of second bar.
Thanks, the old video was too...old :-) !
G.O.A.T
Will definitely still be a party favourite.
HI justin tnx for making this videos you are the far best!
I just have oe remark and that is: you could say that you hit muted strings while changing chords other than say there is nothing just so beginers dont have to gues how you are geting this cckkk betwean changing chords.have a good day
I remember the 1st time I heard Nirvana, is was "Teen Spirit", that was being played in a shop. So when I was back in London I had to explain the song to the guy that worked in the record store. I didnt know the name of the band or the song. Just from the hook, he sold me Nirvana's Teen Spirit Single on Import. It had Lithium, Even in his youth, and another, and from then I was hooked. In a time of Eddie van Halens and Metallica and Slash, Kurt was not a technical guitarist like them, but he was a great songwriter and I think a really good guitarist. I was on of those Nirvana snobs that was all "I knew of this band 1st, before the hype!"
Hey Mr Justin, any tips on singing?
You and marty rock
very nice guy from italy.... ;)
I love your voice when your singing Kurt Cobain
Nice
No fan of Nirvana, but some tracks were good, including this one.
Now to get it down pat, and give my kids some of their type of music, rather than my mainly 60's folio.
Thanks for the vid.
is the tuning different to standard it sounds a bit different when I play it and my guitar is tuned
The strumming part with open snare's is something he does alot on the unplugged album..?
party favorite when I was growing up... LMAO.. Still great
Could you do a lesson for sisters by Steve Vai please
Singing sounds good on this also
What brand is your guitar?
On a lot of Nirvan's songs Kurt will strum up open strings when he changes chords. Gives it a bit of a grunge sound.
Degirro Lol i always do that, think it sounds cool for this song! :)
The all power cord strategy is the one he did on the Nevermind album I think
on the chrous how do u mute the g ?
What about "Oh me, of Meat Puppets, by Nirvana". Strugling to get it down. Amazing song in guitar
which guitar is this, pls tell ????
I feel like I'm totally missing something - like I just don't get any of the chords (like it looks like he's doing them totally different like different frets and shit than what I understand) anyone have advice or help?
Power chord version at 3:24
Say, do I get another cigar for pointing out that Nirvana tuned down a half step for the Unplugged show?
no because they were always tuned a half step down for every single song they ever recorded
sweatshirt029
Really? Then why is it in standard pitch on Nevermind
The unplugged show was all half step down (except all apologies and something in the way they are in drop c#) but not all nirvana songs are tuned this way in fact only a handful of songs are half step down most songs of nevermind are in standard whilst some songs on bleach and in utero are drop c# drop c and half step down
MarcBrewer nirvana's cover of love buzz is a half step up. And a lot of songs on nevermind are in standard pitch.
Alexander Kostas You figure Kurt didn't know how to operate a capo?
Fajnie
How do you play B flat?
Hey I'm a new player and this is the second song I learned. Anyone have the same problem with the low E string ringing out too loud throughout the chord progression? Is there anyway I can mute the sting so I won''t hear it? it really messes up the song. If anyone who's had experience can help me with this I'd appreciate it!
Press a finger on it lightly, don't press all the way just rest on it
If you're playing a chord with the root note on the a string you can press the tip of your finger playing the root note against the low e so it will mute it takes some practice but it's a really good skill to learn! :)
Thanks for asking this for me XD I'm new too d:
Young Winnie you could also use your thumb if your hand is big enough
great vid, great track, funny though how we are all too scared to just say that Kurt's playing was pretty lazy and thats why there are the random open strings and weird chord shapings.
as you say, all adds to the flavour :)
Closing to the End of BC
:)
I love how Kurt played that open D, and that weird G, I believe he also uses that G in about a girl
I'm too lazy to tune my guitar back to standard xD
I have almost forgot what standard sounds like. Haha.
just get another guitar have 1 for standard and the other for what ever no need for messing about then :D
I didn't finished the video. I'm guessing the tuning is in Drop D. So right now, my guitar is in half step down.
Yeah, I'm waiting for Black Friday. I'm getting another Acoustic and a bass guitar.
Sweet i wouldnt mind a bass my self hehe .
Man my fingers can't stretch far enough for the G power chord
this is in standard?
i did this half step down :o
sounds weird but ehh
Alienvolt 77 Album version is in standard but they did it live in half step down.
Those mutes you are doing on beats 2 and 4 are very important imo to feel of this song. Without it just doesnât sound as good. The hardest for me has been incorporating those mutes and switching to play the D and C in open as it so makes the song sound better. Muting the strings while playing a C and D chord has been hard. Itâs much easier doing while playing the power chord version.

tried to cover this song on my channel. lmk what ya think

Song request: Alice In Chains - I Stay Away
Really struggling with the Cobain version.that change from g to d Is killing me.
Try practicing changing from other chords to D as well www.justinguitar.com/guitar-lessons/one-minute-changes-exercise-b1-110 | LievenDV | JustinGuitar Official Assistant
can you also teach how to play the chords because some people dont know them
It's a Grade 3 song that puts the lessons of Grade 1 and 2 into action. The lesson shows both open chords as power chord variations. Check the powerchords lesson here: www.justinguitar.com/modules/rock-power-chords-for-beginners | LievenDV | JustinGuitar Official Guide, Approved Teacher & Moderator
Kurt does well on that show considering he's rattleing off smack...they gave him some valium but still...i wouldn't want be doing a tv show in that state...he did a magnificent job bless him
A remake of this tutorial would be great, it gets a bit confusing in the middle
someone help me strum bc i obviously can't get it
Video starts at 5:02
I want to learn a song with B
But I can't play this at a campfire!
