I've seen someone restore the DeLorean from Back to the Future, I saw someone restore the K.I.T.T. 1982 Pontiac Trans Am from Knight Rider, and now this. This shuttle's restoration is as much of a labor of love as the other two projects. I have to say they did well restoring this prop back to it's full glory. :D

When I was a kid, I used to walk by this everyday going to school when it was at the Foundation for the Jr. Blind in Los Angeles, in the 60's. Used to wonder why it was there since the kids were blind. Still, it was cool to look at and I wanted to get in it but it was fenced in. Memories.

I just now read in the "Comments" that the Shuttle is no longer on display at Johnson because the COO didn't think it "fits". I'm retired and have visited ALL the major A&S centers/museums in this country and spent 3 days at Kennedy SFC a few weeks before visiting Johnson in December 2017. EXCEPT for the Space Shuttle mounted on the Boeing 747 carrier and a Saturn V rocket, Johnson was a TOTAL disappointment. I do not recommend it. They did not even acknowledge the existence of SpaceX and offered no SpaceX items for sale in their gift shop. Fortunately I had bought a number of SpaceX shirts and other items at Kennedy SFC for Christmas presents when there. The Startrek Shuttle MUST go where it will be appreciated. Johnson does not deserve it. My #1 recommendation is the Smithsonian at Dullas Airport near DC where they are now carefully restoring the Enterprise scale model used for the TV show and movies.

The prop was only ever an outer shell. All interior scenes from the show were filmed on a separate set that was much too large to fit inside the prop. Notice that the actors could stand fully upright on the set, but the interior of the prop is only around 5-feet from floor to ceiling, which is why the actors are always hunched over when they exit it.

The same thing was done with the original General Lee No;1 car, the shell was so bad they re=shelled the car, fitted a few savable bits from the original on it, and claimed it was restored, when it was not!.
