- With rotation in the near future, it's a good time to go back and look at all of sleepers for every rotating set and see where we scored and where we looked really, really silly.

If a card did see play, I think you deserve credit, even if it isn't currently played.
exactly my thought. full points for sanctuary warden.
I give you credit for Ledger Shredder, Sanctuary Warden, Generous Visitor, Thundering Raiju, The Restoration of Eiganjo, Michigo's Reign of Truth, Angelfire Ignition, Graveyard Trespasser, Galvanic Iteration, Smoldering Egg, Kessig Flamebreather, and Stormchaser Drake.
Yeah, that seems about right
Seems correct
Yeah, I agree with this. Hold your head up Dev, you did well.
I agree. Also 12 cards = 3/set average. Not bad.
I think the 12-set rotation makes this harder now, since there is less room for each new set to breathe. Hopefully rotation will shake things up!
Ledger Shredder should honestly be worth 2 points due to seeing play in Legacy. If people aren't hyping a card up and it turns around and gets into a competitive eternal format, and you call it being really good, that's a career-defining pick right there. Massive W.
I submit to you a refocus of your perspective : you don’t play competitive magic to the same degree as Pros or the sweaty Spikes of MtG, you play for fun. Thus, all the cards that gave you enjoyment are wins.
I will not allow negative points because you were attempting to predict one of the most complex games in the world and doing it for the least grateful community possible - the internet. You did work, Dev, no need to beat yourself up over “missing” picks. Just remember that everyone involved in development missed Oko 😂
This video just broke my heart. I love your content. The self deprecation was rough. I get the impulse, I'm not better than you but man, you deserve to treat yourself better! Love your stuff bro, keep it goin!
yea i feel this too. I want him to know that we think he is great content creator and guy, and we hate to see him being hard on himself.
I think it just shows Dev has a sense of humor and doesn't take himself too seriously. Dev knows Dev makes good content.
Smoldering Egg saw like 6 months of play, fo sho.
If not longer. When Izzet dragons morphed into Epiphany ramp, the only dragons they played were this freaking egg and Goldspan.
Yeah, and didn't it win a pro tour or some sort of big competitive magic tournament?
I laughed so hard through the entire video, not at you, but with you. Seriously, I’ve been waiting or you to make a video going over your past predictions. Glad to see it!
I too love when he reviews old predictions!
High speed hover bike is in mono blue tempo for best of 1. You get credit in my book.
I loved this card in the merfolk deck whenever the 2 mana hexproof token pooping enchantment came out!
Restoration of Aiganjo is a full point
I see that card literally all the time in Bo1 even to the current day. It gets you a land, then ramps you or free-casts a 2-drop, then flips into a 3/4 Vigilance that makes tokens. It's no Fable, but it is a huge value engine. RoE typifies the kind of cumulative momentum that makes NEO the strongest set since Throne and Ikoria.
Blood Fountain is a pauper all-star I think that counts for half a point 😁
I'm glad you are doing this! This might be my new favorite series of yours.
Half point for Tameshi. It was the center of a reasonable modern deck for a moment.
Blood Fountain saw play in Anvil decks!
Light up the night won pt march of the machines, that has to be worth a point!🎉
Dev reviewing Dev is got to be the best timeline of all time. You're 1 cool kat, my dude.
I have to say, Dev, you set a great example to other players by (and I mean this in the most positively kind and loving way possible) putting a spotlight on your failed predictions. That kind of "it's okay to be wrong, because we learn" menatlity seems to be sorely lacking, at least in my experience. Retrospective analysis is a solid means of being not only a better player, but a better person. Keep it up!
Kessig Flamebreather and Blood Fountain are both played in Pauper.
2/10 for New Capenna, 4/10 for Kamigawa ND, 4/10 for Midnight Hunt, 1/10 for Crimson Vow, as far as sanctioned tournament formats are concerned... In a vacuum I would have agreed with most of your calls also.
Context is really the biggest issue here. When you made these calls, it was Zendikar + Kaldheim + Strixhaven + AFR, and the pandemic restrictions were just about to lift but things like organized play were not ready to go full swing. Even with the extended year of being in Standard, by then most people were ready to move on and nobody really gave the set sleepers another look.
Both the man with the place and the man with the points
Blood fountain is pretty big in pauper
Great insights on sleepers, can't wait for the next rotation! 🃏👏
Got you at 11 out of 40 that saw extensive std play on arena ladder. Some of them are still played today! That's freaking awesome! That's a great sleeper hit rate in my opinion.
dev u get the points
Restoration of Eiganjo is a full point!
Restoration is definitely a point.
Ledger shredder was definitely the best card, that wasn't a land at least, from the streets of New Capenna. It was a card that was like $3 for pre-order it and went up to over $20. I'd say that counts for 2 to 3 points
What a great idea for a video. I’m gonna watch this a bunch of times
I didn't realize that Arc Spitter wasn't "Splitter" until now. Cool card but never got anywhere with it when I tried to use it.
It looks like you'd only ever wanna try this in something like a "deathtouch matters" kinda deck
I'll give you a point for Concealing Curtains. You forget the uh that 6 mana mono black sweeper control deck. That it was a part of to stymie the meta at that point. Concealing Curtains was good.
This was a fun video! I enjoyed this type of look back
Sleepers doesn't mean sweaty beaters. Don't shift the gosl posts and then berate yourself because you miss. Each "almost" point had some time in the sun bringing the fun. I appreciate your vibe. Keep spreading love, and be kind, to yourself
This scoring system would make Dave Meltzer proud.
Perfect timing on upload ty
Brilliant concept
Dev, thanks for all your hard work and awesome sense of humour ❤
@13:48 - @13:51 that is some Steiner math lol
Resto of eiganjo definetely was alright in the white midrange that existed. Second chapter (disc a card, get from graveyard to battlefield cost
I laugh more at your videos than standup videos. Thank you.
Blood Fountain is an absolute house in Pauper Affinity, gives you 2 artifacts on turn 1 and then later you can spend 4 mana to get two 0 mana 4/4's out of your graveyard. Really strong in the right deck it just never found a home outside of pauper.
I’ve watched Luis pick many concealed curtains in vintage cube, +1
Life of TU who was always underrated, but it is specially got kneecaped when invoke despair got banned (using it as the 5th mana source felt especially backbreaking for opponents)
Also love the recaps great job Dev & zero credit for the hover bike. It’s a fun card, but it’s in no competitive fish food list
The drake is mvp in my ivy decks and izzet pump decks. It draws a ton of cards once it's stuck on the table!
Also, stop being so hard on your self man! You're such a good content creator!
can't wait for some of these to drop in price as they rotate🎉 snagging some up for EDH!
Love even the score
I think you and everyone is forgetting Eruth was in the song of creation deck. I know it was a while ago but she definitely saw play
I've been playing crimson vow and midnight hunt for years and I still don't understand how the day/night mechanic works.
I use kessig flame breather in my standard burn deck so I grant thee a point
It kills me that he’s right about fun cards.
Restoration is a full point for sure.
HSH is also in mono blue ninjas, which is solidly tier 2
Actually, i do see some use for Even the Score right now in Historic and Timeless (and might become a Modern sideboard staple) because of MH3 giving us a literal Mass Card Draw engine in the form of Necrodominance (and, to a extent, the One Ring)
Hoverbike was in Simic Cookies until it got pushed out by Subterranean Schooner. I'd give you a point for that.
I play Sunblade Samurai on Explorer Fires of Invention, it is cool because I use white reanimation of enchantments.
Restoration of Eiganjo is a full point, come on Dev you’re too harsh with yourself ❤
i loved it whenever u were like "look at me"
StandardCHADS what's up
Tameshi combo is an actual legacy deck that wins with cultivator colossus
I love glittering stockpile in my mono red edh
You cold do something like nizzahon's pontuation for the sleepers (consider a "win" if card appears on ate least X top 8 on a major/relevant tournament 😉)
I like heirloom mirror with ivory scavengers deck it was an awesome card way better then collectors vault for that ability
"Dev's Dunks" = idea for name of video series 😂😂
Light up the night won a pro tour. Blood fountain gets played in pauper.
Honorable mentions of Honorable mentions
i play monoblue and love my hoverbike
Tameshi bloom is a sweet modern deck
Named off a lot of commander cards
id say full point for warden.
You my spirit animal dev
Also remember to love yourself as much as I love you lots of self deprecating humor in this one and just wanted to remind you of how awesome you are
Wait! Hold up Shredder was a sleeper!? WAA!? When my opponent played it against me in the pre release I called it one of the only cards good enough for Modern. That's wild.
Ledger Shredder is worth three points. Dev is the only one who hyped it.
won alot in mono red control with light up the night
Can we get a Dev reviewing this video a few years from now so we can go full meta?
Hshb, (high speed hoverbike) no, you can't have an 8th of a point, but you can have half a point 😂
I play a 4 of HSH in my mono blue artifacts matter deck, got to diamond on arena with it. You should get at least 1/2 a point
If got any play in a real deck you get a point!
Heck yeah🙂
Didn't Valet see play for a hot minute when the Aftermath Samut came out?
We consider Sanctuary Warden a hit 😉
Some of these are Crokeyz cards, Windows and Jugan specifically. I think you are pretty harsh but I get it.
Kessig Flamebreather is half a point for sure
I still like Creepy Puppeteer
you were too harsh, also light up the night has abunch of tops.
If Jugan cost 2 it would’ve been good
Jugan defends isn’t the worst thing in brawl I guess? I’d give a point for that 😅
Always the orzov.
Dev can you do i video on how to use "deadly cover up".....this card never works for me, would love to hear any opinions...i play tje catapault deck
What do you mean it never works? Can you be more specific?
I'd give you a point for Generous Visitor.
Algo comment xoxo
Damn
2
Arc spitter isn't that bad....
Dev vs Dev
Your arena playing is showing through
you miss 100 percent of the shots you don't take
-Kurt Cobain, probably
There should be negative points. Some of these picks were so obviously bad at the time.
Not perse. People said that about OG Oko before he was released
Way too hard on yourself, if a card saw real standard play it should be a full point. I could see fractions if a card was only a one of, or only in best of one decks, but you resisted awarding yourself points on cards that had real moments, even if the moment was brief.
Don't think of it as you failing, look at it as the community succeeded and left you with no good cards to pick
