I was 19 at the time. Just moved away from London to the Northeast. Loved all these games, many I listened to on radio as no TV broadcast in the North East. had to wait to try and find playbacks of anything! COYG! I remember the Arsenal fans 'Conga dance' on the Spurs pitch at the end of the match. I was behind the goal at Wembley when Charlie George scored! Brilliant! Loved them still.

The Arsenal Doubles team fifty-three years ago were so solid as well as exciting.
    Bob Wilson in goal.
The back four Pat Rice, Frank Mclintock, Peter Simpson and Bob McNab.
The midfield George Armstrong, Peter Storey, George Graham and Charlie George.
Up front John Radford and Ray Kennedy.
Both Radford and Kennedy were a strike force.
Fifty-four years ago, we won the Fairs Cup and then we won the Doubles fifty-three years ago.

I lived in Ireland as a kid (I was 14 when Arsenal won the double) and we used to get the Big Match on UTV on a Sunday afternoon (as opposed to all the other regions - I didn't know about that system and couldn't believe the pro-London bias in the Big Match's selection of matches! EVERY week it was a London game!) As a result I saw the double season at close quarters, following it every week with the help of the great Brian Moore. My dad was an Arsenal fan so I've always had a soft spot for the Gunners (I'm a Sunderland supporter).

I went to these games and having been born in Islington at the Royal Free when I boxed in the pros 10 years later I boxed out of Islington.
In 2001 I worked with Graham Taylor at Watford and on my first day there I met Pat Jennings which was nice.

What a great goal by George Graham against Liverpool as a player and only to find himself as manage in the future and it's up for grabs now ! ! ! !
Let's not forget that double winning year with the King of Highbury Charlie George goal as well as well as winning the double that year with thousands of Arsenal locked out Shitehart lane. EIE

I'm a Pompey fan but it is interesting how the Gunners did the double a season after Everton won the title and Leeds United and Chelsea were major forces,Liverpool and Derby County about to make their marks.
I was born in 1970 and so don't really know much til 1977.

I was at Wembley for the FA Cup final in '71 to see Arsenal get the double with stitches still in my side after a burst appendix operation a few weeks earlier. I was 15 at the time & after watching every home & away match that Arsenal played in the London area that year I qualified for an FA cup final ticket via the coupons on the home programs. Nothing was going to stop me getting to Wembley to watch that match. I still have all the '70/71 double wining year home programs & most of the away match programs as well. I also have Arsenal home / away programs dating back to the '50's & a few rare away ones from their Fairs cup campaign. Simpler times back then when a 15 year old could actually afford to travel to watch a Division 1 football match & buy a 5p program on the wages earnt from a paper round & a Saturday job. I'm a pensioner now & haven't been able to afford to watch my favourite football team for 48+ years. Just too expensive now.

Radford and Kennedy were a great striking force during our league and cup double side, forty-five years ago.

Watching George Graham hobble onto the field like a rheumatoid dolly peg made this Manchester United fan's heart sink a little (v Liverpool watch from c. 7:10). Even after his equally arthritic goal

Its just over 50 years since this happened - the Elusive Double - and it really was elusive
    - so many agonizing near misses.
I was expecting a BBC or ITV, 50th anniversary documentary about this feat... maybe its a bit too indigenous for today's telly.

.. actually the quality is very good compared to some of the later vids. Playing on the snow, the white lines brushed clear & the players always gave it their best, making it exciting, if a bit on the slidey side! Great 70s footy. Nowadays it gets called off.

    • @Dermot2927
      @Dermot2927 Před 5 lety

You rarely see a pitch covered in snow at the top level nowadays. They tend to have under-soil heating - lower down the ladder they get the locals to turn out with brushes and shovels!
