Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Did Something Tremendous | Luke Stephens - Luke Stephens

- Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice had to prove a lot. Simply put, it was to be the latest game from the critically acclaimed and supremely lauded studio: FromSoftware. This is the team behind Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls and Bloodborne. All told, five games which all fascinated players when they launched. Selling millions and millions of copies, Dark Souls 3 was the latest entry in the so called Soulsborne series, but after it launched, Hidetaka Miyazaki, the game’s director, said that he wanted to try something new and that the studio would be stepping away from Dark Souls (at least, for a time). For most people they assumed that this meant we would get another bloodborne, but for those in the know, this was not a likely possibility for reasons we’ll discuss later in the video. And so, this left us with the assumption of a new IP, something fresh and different, but also something that needed to shake things up. Change the formula into something unique unto itself while retaining elements of what made FromSoftware an internationally recognizable brand. The bar was set high, and this video aims to look at why this bar was so high, and how Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice was able to surpass all expectations.

Sekiro did something Amazing, it made most of us, veteran soulsborne players, feel like that time when we played our 1st soulsborne title
i totally agree with this statement. I died so many times trying to dodge an attack instead of blocking for that perfect counter

*Video about Sekiro*
*Bloodborne takes up half of the video*
The video is about the From Soft difficulty formula and how Sekiro has taken inspiration from its predecessors
Right
My only real complaint with it. I clicked expecting to hear about Sekiro, get to listen to a story about a little girl in Bloodborne.
I haven't played the "predecessors"; tried Dark Souls once and I got bored by the 30 minutes of gameplay. Then Sekiro came and I gave it the same treatment, then I said: "wtf man, no remaining games anyway"; and now, goddamnit I'm addicted to it, going to NG+3 by the time.
Because BB was phenomenal! Sekiro is not in the same league, a good game though.
Robert is already dead and the Armored Knight didn’t know it, that’s the sad part, only one child survived the tests at the temple.
Robert is one of the rejuvenating children? Was he even in Japan at any point?
@@littlemoth4956 the little guys with the hats are actually spied for senpou temple and also they kidnap children likely ones that won't be missed so they can experiment on them with the rejuvenating waters and since only one of them survived it goes to say that Rober is dead. I honestly think BB is better than sekiro. Atmosphere, music,story..all of that is better in BB, the only thing in which sekiro is better is combat..that is the reason why sekiro is my number 2 game from FromSoftware
@@lukas753331 Sekiro forces you to play a certain combat style, though. Its only fast, but not as fast as BB. It's reactions not actions. It's lucky parries and poise damage, nothing more.
@@airekvinlandslayerofthesev5234 I play Sekiro much faster than I ever played Bloodborne. Also, if you talk about "lucky parries" then it is clear that you are far from being good with Sekiro's combat system ;)
For me, this fighting system is everything I wished to see in a "samurai based" game. Constant parries, clashing of katana's until one makes a mistake. Would it work for a different setting or different soulsborne game? I don't think so.
@@airekvinlandslayerofthesev5234 did you played the same game as I did? Sekiro's combat is a thousand times more faster with constant flurries of attacks, also supported from the fact that there's no stamina bar. The posture mechanic is glorious
"Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Did Something Tremendous"
Well, the first 9 minutes were on Bloodborne, which wasn't even the last FromSoft game to be developed before Sekiro... but maybe this gets better from here.
Alright, now he has spent a few minutes talking about the deep lore of the game, which in my experience was a little more shallow than most of the BloodSouls games, but it was still very well done, so kudos to them for keeping on with the very well established tradition...
Okay, now he's talking about how the combat system forces you into one on one, fast paced, close range duels. Which is true. It was very well done, and it solidifies the samurai action movie feel of the game exceptionally well.
Wait, that... that was it? He made a 19 minute video to spend 9 minutes talking about another game, then 5 minutes talking about how Sekiro's bosses were well fleshed out characters (something present in Demon Souls, Dark Souls 1-3, and Bloodborne), then a 1 minute 20 second segment about the actual amazing and unique part of the game?

The feeling of having wasted my money because I felt like I was never gonna beat the game was a powerful feeling I had when I first played Dark Souls. It wasn’t a bad feeling, I just felt really unskilled and weak. But as I played through I conquered and I was proud of my triumphs. However, after a good 4 years of playing all of SoulsBorne I always feel like I can triumph eventually, which also isn’t necessarily bad but it made victory less sweet. Sekiro recaptured that feeling I had when I first played Soulsborne, all of a sudden I was the ‘casul’ who needed to ‘git gud’, *and I loved feeling like this again.* The enemies intrigued and challeneged me, I died more times than I can ever count to Genichiro (2nd encounter) and SwordSaint (Non-Shura). This feeling reawakened my true love for SoulsBorne, and left me with no disappointment *at all.*
never made me feel like that. soulsborne for me was always just boring to play and frustrating. id rather just leave that shit in my library for years to come instead of playing that shit. sekiro on the other hand was fun, even when i was playing shitty. dark souls had the philosophy of punishing you until you do it right, while sekiro had the philosophy of rewarding you until you do it perfectly

If you like that, you will probably like an "old" game: Ninja Gaiden Black. Once you play that, you come to the realization that all other games, including all soulsbourne ones, are perpetually in slow motion.
They’re probably the same. However in sekiro you run fast asf.
Next video: DMC5 did something tremendible
I dont understand. I keep people saying stuff like this about DMC5. Is it a joke or somthing? Is it good or bad?? Should I play it?
@Aubrey Garaghan I think it’s a game that cators to a very specific type of audience. If you’re a fan of ridiculously over the top action hack-and-slash games the you’ll probably enjoy it to a great degree. If you’re a fan of more nuanced and subtle storytelling and game design (as is found in From Software games) then DMC5 is probably a pass. DMC5 is an amazing game in its genre, but if you’re not a fan of the genre in general, then DMC5 isn’t likely to change your mind
@@aubreygaraghan7479 it's like playing an anime. It's amazing if you know the storyline, if not, don't get it. You'll be lost
Yeah, DMC games are rhythmic button mashers, basically, you gotta rake in those SSS combos and get all the quirky weapons to pull them off. Its storytelling is simply presented so you're not stranded off the main core of the game: action. It's fun to let some steam off and getting an adrenaline rush, I'd say.
@Titan slayer that's a lie and you know it.

@@HMCarsSOA those are better as an expierence of a great journey but as a game sekiro is a better game imo
I bought Sekiro not knowing it was ‘From’ the dastardly group that created the Souls series. Once I figured it out, I was too stubborn to turn away from the challenge. This was by far the best uninformed decision I have made. So many moments and struggles..... After killing the Demon of Hatred and getting an achievement that only 3.54% of the Sekiro Xbox community had, I felt an immense satisfaction, nothing like I had felt before. Now, I’m a sucker for pain enjoying another play through without Kuro’s charm. The confidence and gratification this game provided was well worth the mere $70 dollars I spent.
Lol i did the EXACT same thing with Bloodborne, i've never really cared for Dark Souls because the combat felt too slow and clunky so i never paid much attention to FromSoft. Then i saw trailers for Bloodborne and thought it looked cool af, so i got it and a ps4 on release only to realize after playing it for the first time "uh oh, it's from the Dark Souls guys". Never have I been happier with an uninformed decision, I LOVE Bloodborne and I love Sekiro even more.. DS is still meh though XD

Did your gameplay recording come from your first playthrough? Looks like you hadn't gotten over trying to dodge everything yet.
Genichiro is my favourite boss in the game, and the gameplay at the end shows why. It's not a boss you run around and sometimes attack, like the ape, or one you just parry until it dies like the giraffe guys or whatever they're called, but a fast paced, intense balance between attacking and defending with no space of time hanging back and doing nothing. You're constantly pushing forward and being pushed back upon, and the precision that invites is why I really like the combat system of the game
It is an amazing game! Bloodborne was my favorite but this might've passed it. The combat is absolutely amazing once you know what you're doing. It's like a dance but with katanas.

Never forget FROM SOFTWARE created one of the greatest games of all time... TENCHU Z!!
From Software is the _publisher_ for quite a few Tenchu titles, but not the developer. If I'm not mistaken, Shadow Assault: Tenchu is the only one they developed.
For Tenchu Z they were only a publisher.

I don't have this feeling often, but when the video was over I honestly felt only about 5 minutes had passed. Which is to say I thoroughly enjoyed it. Even though I looked away for some fights to not get spoiled.
More on Juzo the Drunkard: his group of bandits were used as a coverup for the attack on Hirata Estate by the Interior Ministry, making it look like a regular Bandit raid when really the Ministry were trying to erode the power of Ashina by destroying their Vassal houses
From software's games are so epicly great at stories that literally every 'event' or 'action' has a lore significance and psychological symbolism that even 'respawning' and 'dying' are a part of the centre pieces of the over all plot.
NOW THATS ART AT ITS FINEST!
A lot of the backstory by From Software is just so bloody heartbreaking. The story about the little girl in Bloodbourne almost had me crying
They have so many twisted ideas. Just imagine what they can do alongside GRRM.
Halfway through the game you can go back to that window and give the bloody ribbon to her sister and then her sister commits suicide by jumping into the aqueduct. The game is pretty dark
Sekiro was my first From Software title and it's one of my all-time favourite games. Can't wait for DLC or sequels. I think they've done something very innovative with the combat system. I love it. I love the story and its Buddhist themes. There's so many themes in there that most people might not even get it. But it's there.
I really want to play Bloodborne but I'm a PC gamer and hate playing with a controller. I find it very uncomfortable and awkward. :(

Stories that made me cry inside:(lots of spoilers ahead)
1- Kotaro the giant, you find him in Senpou temple and he's one of the 2 NPCs that you can lure into the abandonmed dungeon. When you tell him to go there he says "My daddy is there"(sumthin along the lines). You can find a little room to the left as soon as you enter the dungeon and you'll find the letter of kotaro's father saying he's dying in the prison cell not finding a way to Ashina depths. Last words of the letter are "Kotaro... forgive me". When Kotaro turns into a monster he yells "Daddyy!" As soon as the fight begins
2-Armored knight, the senpou temple monks asked him to defend the bridge from any intruders and in return they will heal his son (btw robert's firecrackers are his son's firecrackers that were sold so they can travel to Japan). When you defeat the armored knight he died thinking he failed his son when in fact his son is dead just like all the rest of the children of the rejuvinating water except 1
3- Sculptor, a rogue shinobi who trained in valleys for all of his life with his friend(his friend is dead/missing). Someone who nearly got consumed by shura demon but saved by isshin, someone who no matter what always has visions of endless flames finally gets consumed by hatred turning into the demon of hatred ("Wolf... thank you" he says that when he dies and if you give him enough sake along with some eavesdropping Sekiro will recognize him)

12 minutes in and I still haven't heard the tremendous part.
thou FS Games share some similarity in all their games, what impresses me most is how to they change the gameplay in a subtle way and the game itself, the story, the art feels so naturally grows out of it. For example, in Bloodborne, the player is encouraged to attack continuously. As a result, way into the game, the player can feel they attack more viciously which is just like the process of turning into a beast. In Sekiro, the sensation is totally different, i feel a kind of calmness, almost zenlike. What is weird is that we are willing to embrace this kind of change, knowing the process could be painful but rewarding, and the outcome so sweet. (English is not my first language, so i may not express myself properly. Still, Bloodborne is always my favorite. The video is excellent, and thanks for your work!)
Sekiro's combat is just so much fun. Every time someone says "miyazaki wanted to have the combat feel about clashing swords" I just get a bit giddy, because they definitly nailed that one. Especially in the Genichiro & Isshin fights.
tbh I enjoy Sekiro's combat much more than souls games...
"Vytee Videya, I think...I love his channel and can't recommend it more!"
Might want to be able to pronounce the things you love and recommend lol
Vaati is the best Soulsborne content creator!
Music box doesn't delay phase 2 it causes a stun for a couple of seconds regardless of the phase.
I was a Skyrim convert. Almost got rid of my DS copy after not grasping/enjoying the mechanics at first. I’m glad I decided to give it another spin because it’s opened up my gaming world entirely. Sekiro and it’s aerial mobility takes it to the next level.
Bloodborne was my first FromSoft game. Its the only game ive ever gotten a platinum trophy.
Bloodborne is where the Soulsborne model finally clicked with me. I had played Dark Souls before it, but it just hadn't quite got me there. I played it for a bit, got to a point where I couldn't figure out the way forward, and I just sort of moved on. But then I started playing Bloodborne, and suddenly was picking up all the little intricacies of the style, from there, I jumped on Nioh, another I absolutely loved, then the Surge, which was the weakest of any of them, but still, love the style, Salt and Sanctuary, 2D, still amazing. Had it not been for Bloodborne, I might not have given any of these a chance.
Bloodborne is my favorite. Fond memories of killing boses to 36 chambers playing in the background.
My bloodborne characters are some of my most personal characters I have ever made in a video game.
Thanks for the great video. I'll stick around for a while and see what other incredible content you'll entertain me with. Guess I'll have a few videos to watch until then. Cheers.
as a + to the little story details you could ve mentioned that your firecracker prosthetic when found in the shop is called "robert's firecrackers" so you re basically fighting the knight with his son's toys
TL;DR
Miyazaki made a brand new game with new systems of combat similar to Dark Souls and Bloodborne and did it well... I was REALLY hoping that this video would have a bit more substance to it :(
I love all fromsoft games and I absolutely adored sekiro, for me the game is on par with DS1, my favorite fromsoft game and probably the best game I've ever played. But in the other hand let's not just keep showering them with praises, mainly because at this point I feel like lack of criticism is actually doing some bad for the game.
Sekiro does have flaws and I think we need to discuss this because just praising then won't help them in the long run. Fromsoft still didn't fix camera, lock-on and wall issue (pinned to the wall and you absolutely see nothing), these are complaints players had from the first game and they didn't even bothered to address them yet. Some of the phases of certain boss fights seemed super unnecessary and all it did is to kill some great charecter moment just to gain couple of points in the "difficulty" department. The story is once again "a prosperous country in the brink of collapse trying to continue the prosperity using some supernatural means and in turn losing thier own sanity", it's was lordren and gwyn in DS1, Yharnam and blood ministration in bloodborne and Ashina and genichiro this time around. And stop with the poison area, and this cursed village thing already.
And finally, STOP PUTTING FAST AMD JUMPY ENEMIES IN A TINY ROOM!!
sekiro is a 9/10. But since nobody is even bothering to say anything criticism for the game. I just wanted to mention few.
@Fred Duwe Glad you think so, fromsoft games hardly gets any criticism and if someone does it's pushed back. The game is amazing but they does need to improve in some aspects, it's even more saddening that most of these issues are rather been carried over from previous games.
@Fred Duwe Well, you criticisms are valid and I mostly agree with them. But I did prefer sekiro over most previous games, I personally did not liked DS2 or 3. They were a disappointment for me coming Fri DS1. Bloodborne was great actually and I really enjoyed it. But Sekiro really hit home for me, the mobility really feels good (I have an issue when games doesn't let you jump, it's kinda weird and confusing for me), the combat for the most part is very satisfying and bosses were quite enjoyable in my opinion (thought some of the dragged on a bit longer than I would like). But yeah I do understand if someone isn't feeling this game, it has issues for sure.
Yeah honestly the camera is my biggest issue with the game. They need to find a way to rotate the camera when you get pinned or zoom out and make the walls translucent or something. Too many deaths from this.
@@Sir_Robin_of_Camelot Yeah, I agree they really should fix that issue. It's been around from the first souls game and they still aren't fixing it. It's konda frustrating, I'm doing NG+ and not even a single boss killed me so far but that ninja guy just kept jumping around in that tiny room and killed me like 3 times.
Thank you for this video. Even though many in the comments are complaining about how you spent 9 minutes talking about blood borne, it was necessary to understand your argument/review/explanation. I think this video was maturely and well thought out and spoken.
This makes me hope From Software chooses to branch out more not less. I'm sure another Bloodborne or Darksouls would do well and be worthy of their series but I would love to see this developer continue to dive into new gameplay styles that can still be familiar and provide new challenges to long time fans. Personally, I wasn't into From Software games until Sekiro came along and once I've had my fill of that, I'm very much looking forward to experiencing their older titles.
Great Game. Take me 100 hours to get the platinum trophy.
Everyone who is complaining still dont understand from software and miyazaki...you need to give the game TIME...forget all about soulsborne games and you will have a fantastic experience...this game is a masterpiece you just need to understand its mechanics and git gud
Nah it's alright but it's a pale shadow of souls and Bloodborne. Inb4 git gud I already beat sekiro and it has zero memorable moments like Dark Souls and Bloodborne. It's a one trick pony with the combat feeling on rails that forces you to do things exactly how the devs want you to.
@@CrolyGiart not in the way that I will remember the lady maria and martyr logarius fights in Bloodborne. Or smelter demon and blue smelter demon or sir alonne from ds2. Or Pontiff, nameless King, and abyss watchers.
I'd put those on the level of the gapping dragon from DS1, cool when you first encounter them but definitely not the masterpieces fromsoft has done in the past.
@@nuarBlack Yeah Fountainhead Palace wasn't a place almost every one who has played it has praised, or the interactions with the Snake, or in general the final fight. The combat isn't on rails. I don't think you get what that word means.
@@jennifervalentine8955 I don't think you get what it means. Trains go on rails egro you have to do exactly what the train does. Unlike say a car, where you can drive where and how you want. Sekiro forces you to 1) Use a katana 2) it wants you to play the posture game which means, a) deflection>dodging b) try and hit every perilous attack counter to help build posture damage. 3) prosthetic tools are only useful in specific circumstances for the most part.
This means the game is on rails when compared to dark souls where you get to pick your weapon and play style. And miracles, spells, pyromancies, and bows are useful in way more circumstances than prosthetic tools. And also allow for some creative uses as well. Fire paper or pine resins and other consumables were more impactful than any of the consumables in sekiro. Monk sugars are pretty worthless. The counters to status effects are about it and divine confettie for the select few bosses that is for.
I didn't say it was better I just sayed its equally good...and you have to give credit to from software for trying something different and not playing it safe...
Fighting a boss the right way and beating them felt a lot better than it ever did in Souls.
Yeah, beating bosses using the "intended" skillful approach with minimal cheese feels way more rewarding.
Everytime there’s a “just wow” in the thumbnail I read it in an Owen Wilson voice just by habit
Yet another "WOW! Did Something "
Sekiro is truly a fantastic game, it beats both Dark Souls and Bloodborne gameplay wise and Bloodborne is my favorite game out of the series!
its boring and after a few hours the combat just feels repetitive with no way to play differently. The blocking/parrying is super forgiving and its just feels easy and tedious
@@fewtag To you of course.
@@Bloodhurl67 tell me what makes it so interesting then
@@fewtag Cause maybe the gameplay isn't about constantly dodge and spamming R1. It encourages you to deflect and parry your enemies. It's about learning the enemies moveset and trying to find an opening in order to attack to break their posture and kill them in a single blow.
@@Bloodhurl67 its dark souls but it swaps dodging for parrying and the parrying isnt even hard to do, its not about spamming R1, its about spamming L1. The openings are easy to find because they are super obvious in every fight, end of combo or large attack and thrust counters are so forgiving its hilarious. Again, its dark souls but it has way less variety of choices of how to play, hell you hardly even have to move aside from jump or dodge forward from time to time, just spam that L1.
Demons Souls fascinated me since the first day it was released in the U.S. 🙌🏻 THANK YOU Fromsoft for making such amazing games. And thank you Luke for the wonderful and well put-together video 👍🏻
This is great man really enjoyed this. Haven't finished Sekiro yet but so far it is incredible. The lore behind Dark Souls and Bloodborne are amazingly detailed. There's a video by Hawkshaw that I highly recommend called 'Rediscover Dark Souls Lore: The Timeline"
Tenchu!! Does nobody remember that series or that From made it?! It's not a soulsborne game
From Software did not make those games. They published and produced them but they are not credited with development.
Idiots still saying fromsoft made tenchu smh
@@ricklubbers7761 It's kind of crazy.
What I can’t stand about bloodborne is the abysmal fps, It’s so hard to play at 30 or lower fps. Sekiro 144 fps is so fluid and so smooth to play
Just get better eyes lol
What gpu do you have that runs sekiro at 144 fps?
@@chad5115 nasa computer.
Hey Luke, Thanks for the video man! Good stuff! I would be interested to get you critique as well as any input you have on that whole "game needs an easy mode" thing! Also, **** copyright strikes lol
9:42 actually starts talking about sekiro
Why is half the video on bloodborne?
Dope game every single game miyazaki makes is gold ds2 is the only game i truly cant play
Come on, DS2 is my least favorite From Software game too but it's not that terrible.
Ds2 was so trash doesnt even feel like a souls game just a bunch of hey lets put 100 enemies in this 1 spot that will make it hard! Great idea asian steeve!
Can't play Bloodborne because PlayStation exclusive and 30 fps.
Would you play Armored Core 4 and Armored Core for Answer? Those are directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki
I loved the look and themes of bloodborne but sekiro was my first from game. The combat is what sold me. Not having to manage stamina while replacing it with something much more substantial made it amazing.
Dear Luke, last Saturday I completed the game and now I am back on my NG+. I will now order Bloodborne... :)
Love the videos man but I clicked on this to watch sekiro. Bloodborne is my favorite game ever, if I wanted to watch a video on it I will search for one lol
I usually like your videos but this has been awfully structured. I'm at minute 9, nearly halfway through the video and all you've been talking about is how great Bloodborne is.
Meanwhile, the video is literally titled "Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Did Something Tremendous".
So a dislike from me.
I can't figure if I like bloodborne or sekiro more I honestly can play either of them constantly both are works of art very violent art but still art
Sekiro is my favorite game, and I've replayed it so much that, with a little warming up and getting lucky on the ape duo fight, I can still reliably do the full gauntlet. I want to get this good at the other 3 games I have (DS1, DS3, and Elden Ring) but the problem is that the first playthrough of Sekiro was by far the most painful out of any of FromSoft's games. Every boss and mini boss was a wall, Juzuo, Genichiro, O'Rin, Owl, Demon of Hatred. Every encounter I had to bend my brain 270 degrees and back constantly until I finally nailed their attacks, and none of the other souls games have done this to me to this extent. People say your first is always your favorite, and I'm the exact same way. Sekiro was the rigid teacher I needed to get me into the more open form style of the souls games, and I can't thank them enough for this game.
The video you clicked on starts at 9:40
Is this a bloodborne or sekiro video Jesus christ
Great video, excellent choice of background music.
Love knowing the background to this game in this way. Thank you^^
