    Mike, great content. I've been in the industry my entire life, almost 43yrs old. Bachelors in landscape design and horticulture. What I feel is the biggest struggle especially in the North East is Labor force. Can you touch on what I feel is the largest limiting factor in seasonal business's and that's lack of labor? I have to turn down minimally 50% of what we gross each year in work available that is ours to have. We just can't find help. Plowing for us with the dismal winters has not allowed for us to retain workers in the winter months. This is a call for help with a great video on how to help in this area of business. For us, its not a issue of work, not at all, its the hands to do the work. Thank you Mike. Rob

    Selling the house doesn't make any sense to me. He is selling an asset to pay off some of his debt. He still has a failed business with no house now. When you have to put personal money or assets into a business, that is a single to change your business strategy or closed down and go get a job working for someone else. I am third generation business owner and never have we used personal assets or money in the business.

    You are an exceptional man. Your care for your employees is clear. Your desire to help people is clear. However, like a lot of people with big feelings and big hearts, you became more of a doormat than a leader. Do not let go of your care and desire to help people but realize sometimes the best thing you can do for someone is set the tone and establish boundaries. Regardless of the character of your past employees if you set the tone you wouldn't be dealing with constant demands because you established yourself as a clear leader and not just their friend.
    Keep going, brother. Believe in yourself. Establish yourself as their leader/boss. Your employees need you to establish boundaries. Boundaries give us clear expectations to guide us through life. Without clear guidance you have chaos. Remember that life/business/family is a journey. There will be ups and there will be downs. Your objective is to keep moving forward and not to be perfect. Take a deep breathe and believe that you've got this.

      Depends on the city and area .. this same house in California wouldn't have a yard at all and be 3 million plus 10k a month in taxes 🤣😂. In my area this same size house and lawn. Would go for 500k to 600k in a bidding war

    Too many nice trucks, too much new equipment. Who needs $120,000 in debt just for trucks and equipment? Buy a couple $10,000 trucks and keep them maintained, and presentable. I've got 2 trucks on the road at all times and one more as backup if one of those needs crucial maintenance or break down. They costed me roughly $45,000 for the 3 and every single one has a dump insert.
    One common denominator on these failing companies is living outside of their means. Paying expensive high interest mortgages, some have luxury vehicles, and most have new or fairly new trucks in their fleet. 2 trucks can do 40k per month in my area. They don't have to be new to do those figures.
    Sell the house, sell the trucks and downgrade your life to owned assets not bank owned assets.

      @@wardee549 I've seen so many profitable 30 or 40 year old businesses where the father retired or died, and the kids run out with all the company's great credit and buy all brand new equipment. Within a few years they are gone. There are always going to be dry spells in business, that new equipment seems great when you are swamped with work, but when the dry spell hits, and you're making payments,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

      I own a trucking company, we're running nice, well maintained, used trucks and trailers. A new truck is 150 to 175k a trailer is another 30 to 40k. We're running trucks that I bought and fixed up for less than 25k each and trailers that are 10k each. The trucks generate the same amount as a new truck without the overhead, downtime for warranty repairs, and similar fuel efficiency.

    Just wanted to update everyone on what we’ve accomplished since Mike paid us a visit.
    We have been holding daily team meetings each morning. We are on track to pay off $36k of debt by this January. We’ve already reached our goal of $30k/ monthly revenue for our 2 maintenance trucks (each truck has 2 people and this revenue does not include projects).
    Our guys are getting paid regular bonuses that boost their yearly income.
    Overall, we are heading in the right direction. We have a long way to go but we are making great progress and I anticipate next year, we will be able to begin growing again.

    This is a great channel. Rum my own gardening business, just myself but I'm frugal and try to spend my money as wisely as possible. Only part way through but wish this guy and his business all the success in the world. Making sure your employees are happy and being a good boss makes all the difference on people's mental well being.

    I thoroughly enjoy this series and I wish this property maintenance company I work for would understand this but every time I bring up some of these points they just shut me down and say they don’t need to do any of it. It’s even worse because 1 of the owners is family and has partnered with another landlord on the property we manage. I have to demand a sit down meeting in order to address any concerns that arise from our team but never get a resolution. We lost some people just due to a financial crisis but they were barely getting minimum wage and the new team leader is struggling to keep any organization in how things should be done. The last meeting we did have I was basically told to deal with it, and shut up. I can’t afford to lose the only income my family has but I’m at a loss on where to go. Thanks again Mike!!! I would love to do what you are doing helping businesses grow some day.

    Been in this exact same thing. Bad company can corrupt bad morals. Once we got rid of just one bad guy that wasn’t looking out for the team just self. My stress, my anxiety, depression went away. Good employees make and break you and your business

    This guy is anything but a "failure". I'm purposely keeping my business small.and expenses low for a reason as I know it would be pretty easy to become overwhelmed with managing employees aswel as running the business and dealing with everybody's problems, trucks, maintenance, customers, accounts! Not easy!

    Absolutely no advances..... EVER. Learned that one a long time ago. Also, raises only 1x per year in Spring based on productivity. If you can't work for agreed upon rate, I understand.....goodbye

    Great episode and sad he had to sell the house for the business to thrive. Hopefully he climbs back and gets a home for the family again. The 6 weeks after recap at ending was nice to hear how the business is doing and felt invested in the owner to know he is doing better.

    after 32 years of running my business and seeing what Ethan has gone through , I feel that he puts too much heart into decisions that should be focused on business and business only I went through a similar experience where I couldn't find employees to think or even come close to dedicating themselves as I was. I found I couldn't help every employee and train every employee to think the way I thought it turned into more of a recycling factor. Overtime every interview got better and better . I began allowing the employee to talk more during the course of the interviews. And ask strategic questions .One of the most critical parts of the interview is that if you're not a team player. Then you won't survive here. I will finish by saying. Stay strong in your faith. And always look forward never mind the bumps and bruises. Think about how far you've gotten and the name you built for yourself. God is good🙏.

    If he sold his home, what happened to his family situation? Unless he found a better home, he seems to have used long term permanent home equity to pay off short term business debt.
    With the exception of our health, there is no substitute for the security of owning a home, especially after its paid off.
    I am curious to know if he bought a better home. Also, it looks like he owns two very expensive trucks. A "good enough truck" can be bought for 10k. With minimum state liability insurance only, an older truck can save from $1,000 to $1,500 each month.

    Before selling the house I'd sell off equipment and accounts to relieve debt and overhead. Giving up 40 clients is like burning cash in a bonfire. Tons of people are looking to expand and would have happily paid to get those accounts. I know it's overwhelming but when you are a man of God you understand everything can work out if it is in His will.

    Not all business owners understand.
    As long as the business owner is willing to tackle their deficiencies or weaknesses, they can overcome.

    The reason why all of these people are in debt that you highlight is because this is a stupid industry with low profit margins. It is capital and labor intensive, highly regulated, and has limited pricing power to pass expenses onto consumers. The people who succeed, even the large national firms who have private equity backing, hire "unregulated" labor and do not comply with all regulations. Many of the consumables and professional services I use in my business are up 33-40%. There is no way to pass on this cost when you're selling a commodity product (labor). Even adopting a skimming model for high end consumers - there is a limit to what you can charge. Your model of franchise lawn care is brilliant because it makes the operator and laborers work very hard ("pay for performance") but you always get the franchise fees.

    Landscaping and tree work industry is severely underpaid and under appreciated for the amount of work that’s expected, that’s why you get so much riff raff , who wants to bust there asses and come home beat down cut up and hurting for 16$ an hour when you can go work in any warehouse for 18-20 an hour with full benefits, that’s the biggest issue

      That's one of the reasons, why finding labor for landscaping, is so difficult. Outside of immigrants, most people don't see the value of working in this field.

      I work for a guy who runs a one man show other than me, we’re in Dunedin fl he pays me 25 an hr. If I get hardscape jobs we split it 60/40 him.
      I’m super grown tho, as in been a small business owner for 20 years, own my house, zero debt and I have experience with all things blue collar and I’m old school so he likes that part and to him it’s worth a cpl hundred a day

    I hate to say this, but this is what happens when you have a good heart, and its widely known. His past in ministry exposes his heart strings. Though I do not have a background in ministry, I care for people. This has caused clients and employees to take advange of my kindess, in the past.

    Great episode. Honestly man I went through panic stuff a lot, but once I accepted that I am the boss, and I make the decisions and I may mess something up. But it's ok because I am accountable for my decisions. For me it made it to where the stress and anxiety is still there, but it's not in control

    Brandon, if you read this; I would encourage you to look into what yoga is and where it comes from.
    Being a former minister of the gospel I think you will see that this isn't something Christians should be performing or supporting.

    After being a Christian for 30 years and owning a business for 14 of those years, I would humble like to make a suggestion. Get rid of the Therapist get rid of yoga and focus on absolute unconditional surrender to Christ as your Lord an 40:33 d savior. He’s got to come first in everything even your business even your family, Jesus should be the number one thing in your life. This is not ministry that will burn you out. This is all about relationship. I really encourage you to pray every morning and all throughout the day study your Bible, at least a chapter a day, be involved at church and put God first in all things, and your business will thrive.

    Really like this guy. Good dude obviously but needs to do the work to be a business owner. Sounds like he is and is receptive to anything. He'll win. At times I did what he did. Play ostrich and hope its going ok. Just doesn't work. Best of luck.
