    We had a SeaRay 320 for years. The bilge had a heater and we didn’t winterize it the whole time. We also had a covered slip with a “patio” where we kept a love seat, chairs grille, dock box etc. we also had a bottom paint every three years and left it in the water. We were fortunate in Texas.

    I had a boat very similar to yours in the UK, very similar costs except the fuel it’s much more here. Owning a boat is like standing in a cold shower, tearing up pound notes, or in your case dollars ! What finally ended my boating days was leaking intercoolers and both legs needed a full gear box rebuild, cost me thousands and thousands to sort out. The good news was, like you I done a lot of work on it, bought it for £47k and 3 years later sold for £56k, if you buy older like yours and look after it you can make, but will never make back the running costs.

    Quick tip from someone with a pretty big boat as well... if your lugging around 100+ gallons of gas, that's a lot of needless weight that you may not need at the moment, therefore you are burning more fuel to get around, lugging around all that weight. (Same with fresh water tank... doesn't need to be full of you're hooked up to the dock/returning to the dock anyway)
    If your going far far, fill it up. If your just hanging around and taking for spins, have it between 1/3 and 1/2 a tank. Between leaving behind some of both your gas tank & fresh water tank you'll notice quite a bit of difference $ wise. Enjoy brotha !

    • @BrandonGross
      @BrandonGross  Před měsícem +2

      Love that advice! I always keep the freshwater tank empty. But gas I may have to do exactly as you said!

    Cool boat. I drove/lived in a semi tractor for 12yrs & I can live with less(now retired). If I were to do that in FL, I would buy a mid-sized pontoon boat and modify it. I like fishing, and would go for days on extended fishing trips. A 50hp outboard would work in the intercoastal waterway, with a 10hp trolling motor. You're living the dream.

    Have 23' cuddy cabin, mercruiser 5.0 which is smaller that yours, but faster and easier to move with Toyota Tundra V8 on a boat trailer. Repairs are something I have to, like a pair of exhausted manifolds every fews years. Parked at home, buffed, fixed at the work shop.

    Came across you videos cause I am always looking at boating related content. I have been boating most of my adult life and I am now on my 5th boat. You have a well manufactured boat with Cruisers so good purchase. Someone commented not to fill the boat wiith gas and water if you are not going far and that is so true. More weight means motors work harder and burns more fuel. Best of luck and do not get discuraged when things break, it's not a boat unless something is broken on it. LOL

    Come down to florida. You dont need to stay in marinas. Anchor up for free. Saltwater is tough on the boat but we have some great fresh water here. Look up the st johns river. It meets the ocean in Jacksonville but runs all the way down to orlando. There are so many beautiful springs on the river. Look up silver glen, salt springs, blue springs. And the florida keys are awesome. Florida is the boating capital of the USA.

  • @DougAlesUSA
    @DougAlesUSA Před 20 dny

    ♦️Brandon - just because you did not mention it on your winteriztion list, be sure to winterize your water heaters heat exchanger and shower sump.
    Look for two hoses that form a loop from one motor to your water heater then a second hose from your water heater back to the same motor.
    If you have this two hose system as I described, after winterizing your motor, remove the two hoses from your motor, use a funnel to pour RV antifreeze into one hose until you see RV antrfreeze pour out of the second hose. Now you can re-install your heat exchanger hoses to your motor.
    Shower sump, simply pour RV antifreeze down your shower drain in your head until the overboard discharge pump comes on then stop.
    Hope this helps you avoid a costly repair.
    Thank you for creating and sharing this video.

      Hey Brandon, just discovered your channel. I bought my twin V6 Bavaria 29 feet 2015 boat three years ago and appreciated the video as you went throughout all the processes, learnings, painpoints etc. its a wonderful journey and experience. Enjoy every moment! It‘s worth the pain, I never regretted the decision, although its much more expensive to own a boat like this on lake Zurich in Switzerland. Just to give you an idea (all in USD): summer berth 4500, winter storage in a covered shelter 2700, maintenance engines 1600, maintenance rest like polishing and underwater paint 3000, fuel calculated with 50 hours pa 2000, other stuff and upgrades 2500 … this equals 16300 in a freshwater lake with little wear and tear. The boat was 105k used in excellent condition.

I sold the boat for about 80% of what I paid in April. I spent 5 months in SC and 7 in New England and was living for about 12k a year in Marinas. No trailer. I work from home as a developer and saved over 500k in the time I did it. Good Luck! I just bought a slightly larger one that I rent out short term on Martha's Vineyard. Never understood the current high costs of marina gas. When I was growing up marina gas was dirt cheap because there were no road taxes added in; and the quality was usually a little less (aka off highway fuel). I can remember when the gas station for the car was 99 cents a gallon for regular leaded and the marina was 64 cents a gallon for regular leaded. Seems like the current expensive marina gas is a scam.

An even up river, you can same money going slow. Planing is cheaper than not when you're in a hurry, but idle speed is usually even cheaper.

I always wanted to live part of the time on a boat, but how do you deal with the bugs, fleas, nats, ants, mosquito. I guess technically I could. But I don’t really have any interest in that haha. All of the systems will be winterized at that point.

    If you buy another, consider registering it through the USCG. You then don't pay the normal tax; you pay in-leiu tax which is much less.

    OBSERVATION...great vid. Curious, how much did the houseboat, van, ambulance, and rv cost all in compared to if you bought a house and that house equity value per year from the time you started this nomadic lifestyle?

    What's the boat model and how much did you pay for it? Did you consider getting a sail boat? Even if you don't want to use sails motoring it around is way cheaper and usually you get more for the money.

    You could get more clicks if you called your cabin cruiser a Tiny House or a Casita. Those have been trending on YT for a long time. Can you add "abandoned" or "WW2" in the title somehow?
