Why Was Jesus Baptized? Fire, Holy Spirit, Water, and What it All Means for Us

  • How does Jesus baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire? Are these one or two baptisms? Why does the Old Testament often place together washing, fire, and the Spirit? And how does all this connection to the baptism of Jesus, his crucifixion, Pentecost, and our baptism? How is Luke’s account of the baptism of Jesus presented as a theophany? Why is the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove, and how does this reflect both creation and the flood account? All these questions and more, Chad Bird will answer in this week’s “Reading the Gospels through Hebrew Eyes” on Luke 3:15-22.

Hey, Chad, I watch every week and find much in your content that inspires me. Thank you! I am wondering though if you have a video on Matthew 2:1-12? The lectionary that I follow has Mt. for this week and the Baptism of Jesus next week. Thanks.

Hey Allen. Glad the videos are helpful! I have not done one yet on Matthew 2:1-12. I did write an article this week that might be of some help to you since it deals with some of the OT background. Here is the link: www.1517.org/articles/why-not-diapers-and-casseroles-instead-of-gold-frankincense-and-myrrh The Lord bless your preaching!

I’m not sure if this is a stretch, but do you think it’s possible to say, because Jesus is the representative of the chosen one in the framework of Adam (+Eve), Noah (+his wife), that the female representative missing at Jesus’s baptism would be the church? I mean this in the same way that Adam and Eve are one, Noah has his wife, but Jesus representing them here alone will have the church as a bride. The reason I ask is that it would imply a lot about our union with Christ and fulfilling the representative role originally given. Just a thought!

To simplify the thought, in this “creation” account, the female representative, who is present at the other ones, is missing.

Could you please go further in depth about Jesus’ baptism being “book ended” with the crucifixion? Does that mean he’s baptized twice? Also, what do you mean by our being judged “in Christ”? In what sense? What’s the most anyone can say about that without sounding terribly vague? In what sense did we, the living, "die" 2000 years ago? Thanks.

He is baptized literally in the Jordan and he describes his crucifixion metaphorically as a "baptism" (Mark 10:38). As the last Adam, Jesus is the head of a new humanity (see Paul's Adam-Jesus typology in Romans 5 and 1 Corinthians 15). What happens to Jesus happens to and for all humanity. He is the representative human on the cross. God sees no other people outside him, and all people are in him. So when he is judged and condemned, so is humanity. When he dies and is buried, so is all humanity. And when he is raised, so is all humanity. Therefore, all those who are in him, who are baptized into his human body, there is no condemnation for them. The condemnation has passed. It already happened on the cross and grave. In Christ, we are free, justified, forgiven, and our lives are hidden with Christ in God.

@@chadbird1517 Thanks so much for the reply! Your work has been super helpful lately in my journeying into Lutheranism. Just a follow-up, if you don't mind: Could you say even more about what it is to be IN Christ? I'm coming from a Roman Catholic theology background (for the most part) and when I hear that expression I think something like indwelling of the Spirit (which is odd because that's Christ in me)--but that can't be what you mean, since you're talking about the historia salutis. Also, I'd appreciate it if you said a bit more about God not seeing us but seeing Jesus. How literally do you mean that? Do you mean only to refer to our judgment or are we non-entities to God except insofar as we're grafted onto the vine, so to speak? Cheers.

Another point made at God's speaking of Beloved Son -
    King David's name means "Beloved"
When Solomon was born, God told David to name his son Jedidiah, - meaning "Beloved of the Lord". (2 Samuel 12:25)
When Jesus was baptized, the Father used the same terminology when He said, "This is my Beloved Son in whom I am well pleased." (Later said again on Mt of Transfiguration)
Then the Spirit fell upon Jesus at His baptism - God was confirming that this is the "son of David" who will sit on the throne forever. (Mathew 3)

    Jesus was baptized because:-
    1. He was showing us what we should do.
    2. This was God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit all together.
    3. He was showing us what was going to happen to him. He was showing himself dying - when he went under the water, buried - when he was completely under the water, and rising again - when he came back up.
