I met that man the year of 1711 in Kingston. He was sleeping next to a fat man with muttonchops. He had too much rum. When he awoke, he stole my rum.
I just got used to Bacardi because my local bartender would fill up my rum and coke with 75% Bacardi and top it off with the coke in a tall glass for only 5 bucks. I miss that guy.

@@brendenperry3770 that would be because youre not MEANT to straight shoot Malibu 🤦🏻♂️its a liqueur which you CAN shoot but its meant to be mixed in with other things, like in a Bahama mama, blue hawaiians or bay breezes. It doesnt shoot well on its own like other rums do because its not meant to.

I like Sailor Jerry! It's smooth and delicious alone but mixed it's even better. Just be careful because it's really strong!

Diplomatico is dosed beyond belief. It’s just an old fashioned in a bottle so of course it’s going to sip nicely. Not to mention it’s insanely overpriced. Try out a bottle of Doorly’s or Appleton.
Stiggins fancy pineapple rum is also from plantation super tasty

Yeah I mean alcohol itself tastes like ass, but there are some good drinks imo. But generally what makes a drink good is if it manages to not taste like there's as much alcohol in there as there is.

Whiskey People actually like higher proof whiskeys because the alcohol is what contains the “flavor” so there are people who specifically like the taste of alcohol out there.
@@makoman115incorrect, you talk to any big bourbon drinker or master taster at a distillery, the proper way to drink bourbon is at around 35-40 percent because anything higher and the alcohol fries your tastebuds ruining the nuances of the barrels flavors
@@makoman115 Whiskey person here! It's true enough that higher proof has a tendency to suggest a richer, more complex palate and be right. The short version is: whiskey-making is chemistry and is hard.
To my admittedly limited knowledge, ethanol doesn't necessarily contribute to flavor, not without becoming something else. Esters, aldehydes, phenolic compounds, lactones, etc. are common chemical types that contribute to certain flavors. And ethanol + certain acids (i.e., butyric) can become esters during aging, fermentation, or distillation.
For example, you have aberlour 12, redbreast 12, and Russels 10, all of which are proofed nearly to the floor while still offering complexity.

Because Bacardi Carta Blanca is a neutral white rum so it is VERY similar to vodka. I even used it as a replacement when I didn't have any vodka around and nobody complained.

A great alternative is Don Q. It's the main competitor at a better price. They also have the Gold and the Añejo.
Personally I think it has way too much of a chemical, almost laundry detergent esc. taste and smell. Works decent in mixing but I'd really rather drink anything else
@@jimit.4220 I've been to the distillery, the rum is aged in oak barrels. When people don't know anything better than cheap moonshine, then the quality brand will offend their flaky palate.

The 18 isn't actually 18 years old. Age statements on rum don't really mean anything in most cases. Look for rums bottled by independent bottlers of whisky. They will typically have accurate age statements that reflect the youngest spirit in the bottle.

@@lara-chan7482 Captain Morgan is terrible rum, unless you go to Jamaica and find some of the non-export stuff created solely for the Jamaican market.
If you want to try a rum which is easy going for beginners but well made and well respected, get yourself a bottle of Mount Gay Eclipse or a bottle of Ron Santiago de Cuba. (Might be hard/impossible to find the latter in the States because of your weird strained relationship with Cuba)
You could also check out Santa Teresa 1796, La Hechicerra, English Harbour 5 year or even a RumBar Gold if you want a bit more flavour to your spirit but still have an easy drinking experience.
All the above can be sipped neat or mixed. Rum is a glorious spirit category and probably the most varied in terms of production and taste, but there are definitely a number of brands you want to avoid entirely
