The problem is most of the songs on this album are just good and not amazing. It’s missing those stand out moments on American Idiot or even the highs of 21st Century Breakdown.
I agree in terms of consistency this is their best album in years. But it’s also consistently just “ok”. I wish it had more stand out moments or songs that had multiple movements like American Idiot (people forget how Prog that LP was with many songs shifting to different musical sections).
Saviors in comparison is much more stripped down and simple. And that is fine because there isn’t any bad songs on this track list. But it also doesn’t wow.

Most definitely. I don't think they have had a home run since 21st Century Breakdown. Revolution Radio was the closest they have come but it just felt way too familiar to American Idiot and Breakdown without improving on it. Green Day's catalog had such a great evolution from 1,039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours thru 21st Century Breakdown with each album building on the last but they have been stuck in such a weird rut now for way too long. Every album post Breakdown has just sounded like Green Day on autopilot

Suzie Chapstick reminds me of something the beatles would write - I think it's well done and more sophisticated than what Green Day usually does. Their ability to write good ballads is what distinguishes them from all the other punk (or however you want to call it) bands. That's the reason why GD is not a typical punk band that stays on the same level of publicity for years and this approach to explore different sounds is what wins them grammies. I like both new blink and green day records but the latter has a lot more substance and much better vocal production.
And did you pay attention to Coma City drumming? Tre is doing an amazing job here.

    @arthurspils2565 Před 6 měsíci +1

Honestly there weren't any songs in the first half I thought "nah" on, Look Ma kind of "?" but okay, 1981 probably lost some attraction for the repetitive chorus and Goodnight Adeline started being more enjoyable on re-listens with an acceptance of the more ballad-y style.
Started going downhill after that, Strange Days pulls it back up and Living In The 20s was really good in a "I'm angry and need to get that across!!!" way, then the last three all a bit poor again (Saviors was a bit better, maybe mid).
    Had I been advising on the length, I probably would've said cut 9, 10, 13 and 15.

Huge Green Day fan here! Every song they hated I loved 😂 I can understand why homie don’t like corvette summer. Green Day coulda made that a generational anthem but they literally had a great melody and sound and said “that’lil do it” instead of giving it more substance or telling a more intricate story. It certainly does the job if you’re a casual fan or if you like a great and catchy melody (which personally I do like).

This album is a breath of fresh air from them for sure. I’d say I love about 40% like about 20% and the rest is mid to okay. Overall though I see some of your points on some songs but really see this within Greendays top 3-4 albums and most the songs are going to seem better with time I have a feeling if they don’t get into trouble with all the references and “samples” they used making it. What I don’t understand is how Mr firecracker gave it a 6 yet based off what he liked he should be at like an 8/10. I’d personally give it a 7-8/10 not there best but far from their worst.

The only thing that keeps the album from being a 10 for me is that it has a few skips (Goodnight Adeline and Suzie Chapstick, but even those I don't actually mind listening to.)

the new Green Day record is in many ways an antithesis to the new Blink 182 record:
    - Saviors has amazing production, One More Time has horrible production
    - Saviors is mature & classy, OMT is immature & corny at times
    - Saviors is very consistent in sound & theme, OMT is like a mixtape of all Blink 182 styles
one might therefore argue that Saviors is objectively the better album but me personally, i think i like One more time better. i feel like OMT has more personality, fun & memorability. most of Saviors sounds very safe, reserved and formulaic. i gravitate more towards songs like Dance with Me, Fell in Love that are corny & fun than most of the decent but boring midtempo oldies songwriter songs of Saviors.

I've been listening to Green Day since I was 12; they've always been my favorite band. However, if 'Mother of All' was bad, this one is just boring. It's not punk rock at all, just rock. Billie's voice feels distant, the sound is repetitive and unoriginal, lacking any imaginative variation. I'm permanently disappointed, maybe because I discovered Bad Religion and NOFX 10 years ago, and my tastes have changed. Although I quite liked Revolution Radio.

"Dream is Killing Me" is just like "Hey let's do something we've done a million times before" and "No Brains" is so incredibly stupid lyrically. I'll give the album a 7. Some of the songs I was initially meh on eventually grew on me. There's a lot of good hooks throughout and I love the vocals. I would have liked a fast song or two, but I'll take this as a strong improvement over the majority post-American Idiot.

Man - you guys need your sense of fun back. Understood this is on first listens but you need to have another listen with a beer or two and in a good mood.

I don't know how you can rank Green Day songs off one listen. There's so much to dissect.

Seeing that you’re going to rank and score the songs- I hate when people do that. I don’t think you can be fully open to music when you’re judging it like that.

Just what I needed, a Green Day review from the love child of Kevin Owens/Matt Jackson and a negative man-baby who only wants GD songs that sound one way. You can go eat your tacos now.
