  • SPECIAL THANKS TO RALPH CELENTANO!
    We celebrate Black History Month with this rare one reel musical comedy, from Educational Pictures, is one of only ten made, starring The Cabin Kids a musical quintet made up of five black brothers and sisters. They were ushered in to show business by their aunt and legal guardian and appeared in several motion pictures before vanishing from the public's consciousness, not much is known about them and even less is known about their life after their time in the spotlight. This short, directed by esteemed comedy producer Al Christie, also stars silent comic Toto The Clown in one of his last film appearances and one of his only talkies.

    Black, white, green, red, purple or any other color, it just goes to show that anyone can spread love and joy to the world, and these kids were a prime example. Amazing talent and blending of voices. Thanks for posting this remembrance.

    WoW!! It's been so long (over 30 years) since I've seen anything from The Cabin Kids! A lot of people think they were only Our Gang extras not knowing they were an excellent child performance group!! They didn't only sing, but were just as funny as the other child performers of their time! There was Ruth, Helen, James, Winnie and Fred. I wish I could remember the name of the segment with Shirley Temple. This is great, thank you for posting this!

    It’s crazy how so many things there were popular in silent movies didn’t translate to the soundies. Kinda similar to today, from 4 channels to hundreds of channels to now the internet, people like Dionne Warwick who started releasing albums in the 60s are STILL releasing NEW albums currently. They need to be celebrated! She started not very long after this time and is still doing it she was a kid at this time

I love love love to see them sing just as much as I love to watch them. Such talented and underrated talent. They did get a lot of work but I wish they could’ve had more . Diff day diff time I suppose. They sound amazing in this

    The cabin Kids according to Wikipedia: Frederick "Honey" Hall, Helen "Precious" Hall, James "Darling" Hall, Ruth "Sweetie" Hall, Winifred "Sugar" Hall. My favorite was Ruth because her face was. She had cute expressive face. Thanks again.

      Did a little digging for some more information on them and found out that none of them are still around. The tall light skinned girl (Ruth, who I believe was a family friend and/or the cousin of the other four’s stepmother) was the last surviving member, passing away in 1992. The other four (siblings Helen, James, Winifred, & Frederick) had all died between 1965 and 1971. Seems they all had relatively short lives unfortunately. They do have descendants who are living, and some of them have left comments on this video.

      I've seen him in two films so far (this and the Little Rascals' "Mike Fright" episode) and he couldn't stand still in either haha. But one reply here says it was intentional in order to pretend he had fleas.

    • @tonysouth1313
      @tonysouth1313 Před 2 lety

      @@justmas6426 Yes, so it seems - rather awkward, IMO, as if the film-makers were trying to get a laugh from white audiences. ie "Look at the funny little black kid whose parents don't wash him".

    I've seen three or four of these vids now, and the littlest one seems to be constantly scratching himself, rubbing his nose, or other things like that. I have to assume it was part of the act, but I'm not sure why.

    • @tonysouth1313
      @tonysouth1313 Před 2 lety +3

      Yeah, This is the only uncomfortable part of this whole short film - I think white audiences were supposed to think "Hey, look at the funny little black kid who doesn't ever wash".
