Bowled against both of these guys uber tough competitors - Mike Whalin is a joy to bowl with and a super person. Cincinnati is a great bowling city - way too much emphasis on the Western Side of town though...
There was not enough promotion in kids programs to the northern part of the GCBA. Mason - Lebanon - Montgomery- Blue Ash area's As a youth Silver Level Coach our kids events never got the publicity to increase our youth programs and host tournaments - always had to travel to " their " centers. But always managed to enjoy the bowlers comradery - not the fluff and hype of the managerial members in those " bigger draw " areas, we felt a bit alienated at times.
So I created my own local scholarship money program in the North and handled all of the Sponsorship work myself. In the 3 years of the program gave out over $10,000 in educational awards to the kids in our program, it was educational merit ( improvement based on a points system and also utilizing their weekly bowling scores for points.) Started with 13 kids in a 12 lane house and built it to over 80 kids and had to run a 9:00 a.m. and a 12:30 Shift to accommodate the draw in the program !! It never got any positive attention from the YABA community - Zero ... until - One of the Cincinnati Board members tried to subvert the program until we shoved the ( Legit 501C3 ) paperwork in front of their arrogant faces. Then they backed off. I was blessed with 15 Sensational Years at that Center until it was torn down.
The Fantastic Annual Sponsors of the Program: Tri-State Electric Supply, Don Ayer Electric, Mayers Electric, Breemer Electric, Craftsman Electric, Osterwisch Electric, Lebanon Ford, Baysores Flower Shop, Bob Pulte Chevrolet, Sales Associates, Inc., Cooper Electrical Sales, Connor Electric, Gentown Carryout, Geroge's Welding and several other local Lebanon area businesses. ( Forgive me missing some names). Thank you all for the wonderful memories and your unwavering support... We had a total of 12 of those 80 kids in the program from 4th / 5th grade all the way through graduation. Of those 12, 4 students/bowlers ( 3 guys and 1 girl ) went on to college and bowled for their respective schools. We sent a drafted news article to the GCBA YABA association in the aftermath of the children's successes and they chose not to even include that in their year end publication or even make mention of it in a periodical bowling bulletin.
God Bless All of you Youth Coaches who continue to build sound youth through the sport of Bowling !! I may get back into this upon my retirement from work. Right now enjoying my Grand Children...
