- In this video I bring you along as I replace the left front CV axle in a 2006 Jeep Commander with the big 5.7. It's a pretty easy job because this one has recently had some front end work so everything comes apart like a southern car. -Enjoy!

Every once in a while you get to be the next guy when the last guy was making it nice for the next guy!
True statement right there!!!!!
Yea it's definitely nice when that happens lol.
Seems like I have gotten a few of them second time around repairs lately replaced a new water pump with a new water pump on a Chevy pickup the water pump bolts weren’t even close to being tight customer bought the pump an I called him an told what was going on an he had me replace the new pump with a new pump lol the bolts weren’t even hand tight just screwed em up in place an forgot to go back an tighten em up I guess .
And that's the day to buy a lottery ticket
The warning about the flag bolt alone was worth the price of admission. Thanks, Eric.
Yep, I learned the hard way.. 27 stitches in the webbing between index and ring finger. SHould have looked first..
@@mlsargent51 ouch! Did you ever have a cheap air chisel bit break off and get lodged in your hand? Not fun. No stitches but it was bandaged up a few days
@@mlsargent51 oi do you not have a middle finger anymore?
@@mdotguy Yes I do, and all digits still work well. Just a nice white line scar as a reminder.
flag bolts, u-clip/speed fasteners/speed nuts. Oh the many battle wounds and scars left behind. 😭
My favorite part about doing cv axles is how when you put a pan underneath, no oil comes out, but forget that pan and you get covered in tranny oil. My second favorite part is not having a lift and needing to lie on the ground underneath to get enough leverage to pry the old one out, guaranteeing the aformentioned oil bath.
As always Mr O, it's a much more enjoyable experience getting to watch someone else do the work. Thanks for indulging us all and making it look easy.
I need a lift 😂😂😂. I am too old to lay under the car with 15 inches of clearance.
Don't you know it's always Murphy's Law when you put a pan underneath and nothing comes out and like you stated no pan you got a flood of fluid and have we seen that happen to Eric I would say so .
@@garymeredith2441 , and then the dreaded question. " I just bought some kitty litter the other day and now it's all gone, Did you not use a drain pan again?"😂
Here's a hot tip for ya:
Run the upper retaining bolt for the clevis fork in from the opposite side where the threads are. stick a flat head screw driver in the slot in the back while you do it ( i like to use a stubby), and after the bolt makes contact with the screw driver, turn the bolt *just* enough to release the tension holding it to the shock body. Don't go crazy as you can crack the fork. Makes doing that part of the job 100x easier. No air hammers required. :D
Sounds like a great idea
Thanks for that tip!
Eric gonna have the Commander owners thinking the jobs always go that smooth.
FACTS!! I have a commander and I do most of the work in my home garage and it's not as fun as he makes it look. Going on an hour trying to take off the driver side CV axle and she's not budging.
Mine is lifted 2.5 inches, and that alone made it nearly IMPOSSIBLE to re-install the strut fork and upper ball joint to the spindle...
@@kepler656 oh god.. I'm here cuz I'm about to tackle this job alone in my driveway and my commander is also lifted 2.5 inches 🤦
@@zachshaner6296 I eventually got it by lowering the hub on a jack stand, then lowering the entire weight of the vehicle onto it to compress the spring. Still needed a 4ft pry bar to bend the upper control arm down, and then finally, just barely, could get the nut on for the ball joint.
It's do-able, just really sketchy. Take lots of care and good luck
5:11 I always say Focaccia bread just in case. Also, test the splines at the hub from outside before trying to insert the axle in the transmission. Ask me how I know.
"Also, test the splines at the hub from outside before trying to insert the axle in the transmission. "
Test them for what?
@@rael5469 Proper splination, what else?
@@buckturgidson1448 Of course. What was I thinking. :)
How do you know?
Thanks, Mr. O! There's nothing like coming home from slaving over the warm glow of a computer monitor to watch you work on some rusty crap. It really helps to remind me how much I appreciate my cushy office job!
I have a clickety in the front axle on my Commander and the local shops are all afraid to work on it, they say they you need a special tool to do this and you need to take the front differential down. Use to have a good mechanic in the area but no longer and I couldn't do it anymore. It is nice to see there are still great mechanics out there.
It's nice that you have a youtube channel now, so when your talking to yourself for hours on end, people don't think your crazy !!
Nice Vids man, been here for awhile. Helped me become the tech I am. Working for Subaru going on year 5 started at the good ole Chrysler. You and those damn cars are why I’m so good at diagnosing cars.
S.M.A. when you just want to know this is where you go. Sherlock Mechanic of Auto show, starring Eric and family. Love it .
am I the only one wanting a first ever 10 minute long episode of nothing but south main auto bloopers 😏
Don't know why but I love watching u do the simple jobs lol nice and soothing before bed 😄
It’s nice to have one like that to work on every once in a while.. nice video..
It's like having a hard fault instead of an intermittent fault. I LOVE hard faults.
Hey, even a blind squirrel finds a bit every now and then. This was an easy job for a change with a very important tip. You have a nice day!
Great job Mr O! You always make it look 👀 easy, but as you always let your viewers know…”always apply Common Sense “ when working on your project.
Ya Comon sense isn't so common any more
What are you doing Jeep? Show this man some love and send a couple of hats, please!
Woo-hoo! Some Sunday night action! Thanks Eric
Eric thank you for taking the time to make your videos. I have been in "the shop" twice in the last 2 months for framework. Shortly after the second one, my oil circulation was not flowing good to my wheels. Your channel has lifted my spirits. I really appreciate your humble honest personality, the great work you do is a bonus. This job reminded me of a 1996 Buick our Riviera I bought in Arkansas and drove back to Syracuse in 2010, easiest wheelbearing I ever did. I didn't realize how bad our rust rally is. That front end came apart soo easy. Your customers are very lucky. I hope my "Mechanics" get me back on the road soon. But watching your channel is grear therapy.
Gotta give credit where credit is due, Mr. and Mrs. O You guys are the bomb. You guys just make my day. Thank you for the videos.
Eric O. Gets a clean one for once. What a treat!!! Thanks Eric. I appreciate you making videos here on the CZcamss.
Happy New Year to you Eric and Mrs O , wishing you the very best for 2022!
I’m happy it’s a rainy Monday morning here in Ireland and I’ve got my first “come on baby”,
Happy New Year Mr. O! Your videos never fail to educate and amuse me. Thanks!
My thoughts exactly, you and your family deserve some time for yourselves in the holiday season. This Jeep front suspension reminds me so much of a Honda Accord. Most guys remove the "fork" prior to removing the CV axle. I've done this many times before without removing the fork. I've seen guys gotten stuck because they had difficulty with removing the fork and therefore weren't able to get the CV axle out. Have a gr8 God bless day Dr 0 and family 👍💯🇺🇸.
As a geek ex aircraft mechanic, I like the sound of the torque wrench, tone or click, it means the job is getting finished.
It was a treat to hear the tone today 🙂🙂🙂🙂
No air or battery operated tools when I was a crew chief, a speed handle was the closest thing. There were some panels with 200-250 Phillips head screws in then. You made damn sure all your tools were accounted for before installing the 1st screw!
Love your shows Eric!!!!
You make it look so easy ! Thanks for posting.
Gotta love it when things go that smoothly on the whole job
Awesome as always Eric O. Thanks for sharing buddy
Brake lines look amazing. Thanks again NY
Hope you and the family had a great Christmas and New Years. Love the videos
Nice to see you get a easy one once in awhile , have a great Year .
Thanks for the content/teaching Mr. Eric. Tour channel is great, be safe.
Thanks for the great whacking tips! 👍
Awesome way to start the week watching a professional before going to work. Keep up the good work and see you on the next one 👍
Great descriptive and detailed video! One that is clear and can see step by step! Thank you!!
You always do a good job
Welcome back Eric......missed your videos.....hope you and yours had a great Xmas
Great vid! Thanks for showing us.
Eric, hope you had some good time off. Good to see you starting to get back in the swing of things. Don't worry, you'll be picking out the right socket a lot sooner than I will. Thanks for Sharing!
I was watching one of your episodes (I can’t remember…) But you mentioned someone Unsubscribed because of your phone ringing and your doorbell sound? Wow, takes all types to make this world go (I guess). You’ve got a great channel, and I enjoy watching you work and explain what you’re doing!🤗 (At least I’m not having to do the work!!!! 😉😉😉😉) Really, thanks for you videos 👍👍👍.
Well done, another great how to video. Plenty of funny moments, you talk while working the same way I do, hilarious stuff. Thanks
You are the commander Eric. You show these vehicles who's the Boss. Great video my man.
Happy New Year!
I always enjoy your videos! I live in NC. Cars are for the most part rust free, but some do wind up down here from the rust belt. I'm originally from Erie PA. So I know the pains of working on rust buckets. You do an outstanding job fixing the problems and keeping a cool level head at the same time.
Great video as always Dr. O!! I was hoping you put out a new video… I think I’ve watched all of your other ones at least twice they are so good!! Please keep them coming!!!! I could watch these videos all day and it’s ok to swear once in awhile we all do!!
Awesome content Mr.O! I enjoy your skills and knowledge. I should have been a Mechanic. I pay close attention when you work. Its good info to have. Thank you all O Family.
Eric,
Great video - thank you! You make it look so EASY. Then I get under my rusty car in my driveway and...
Paul (in MA)
I work on these things all the time and yes you were very lucky the rest sometimes requires all new a arms it requires all kinds of new stuff it is ridiculous thank you for sharing I enjoy your videos very much and you saved my butt more than once
Cream job there Eric , no rust to sweep up after the jobs finished 👍👍👍
Happy new year
Always enjoy your videos.
You had some good luck with that lower strut pinch bolt, very common for them to seize in place. Another great episode Eric👍
Happy New Year
This guy is the man
Great,, clear video. Hope you guys are all doing well. Watch out for those fingers. 😊
You rule Eric. Keep being you.
Clever work with the air hammer there, Eric. Nice job 🙂
Man down , man down 😂😂 just love your channel 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Best on CZcams 😉
ALWAYS PROFESSIONAL WITH A SMILE !!!!! CHEERS and GOD BLESS..... HAVE A FANTASTIC 2020 . HIT 1 MILLION BEFORE CHRISTMAS ~~~~~~
When that ball joint break loose on the upper. I said here we go!!
But that was sweet
I don’t have that luck. You know it would have spun in place
Nice job, Eric!
Awesome job Brotha!
great job, you make it look easy!
Awesome video, very informative, very entertaining!
I enjoy watching your videos especially when you're aggravating Mrs. O its hilarious! Makes me laugh every time keep it up
Florida Man here. When my family moved from NJ to FL around 1990 my grandmother was driving a Pontiac Sunfire that never really gave her much trouble. The first time she needed something fixed the mechanic NOPED. He told her that the car was dangerous drive and wouldn't touch it. According to him it was a miracle it lasted as long as it did with all the rust and rot.
yeah I hear ya!! Used to say 'fantastic' a lot working on my vehicles!!
Well done as usual!
Got one.....same year, even same color......getting that fork off (yeah lol, I said "fork off") on a high mileage one is a REAL treat.....nice job !
Awesome video Eric O!
I had cause to bleed the brakes on my Rav4 over the Christmas holidays and was able to use the tongue click torque noise after a few practice goes. Thanks for the inspiration .
Mr. O, we sure could use your skills down here along the Treasure Coast of Florida. I'm a former PRNY resident myself. Moved down here a few years ago and don't regret it one bit. Your talents and honesty ensure you would be successful anywhere you live.
Thank you SMA. Appreciate the video.
Thanks for the video Sir👍 iam just about to swap CV axles on my sister's commander
Always double check your triple check...then go over it again in your sleep. Really enjoy your videos.
Hi, Eric. Welcome back to the You Tues. They missed you. Happy New Year to you and your family, including the cat. Thanks for sharing! Stay Healthy!
A Chrysler product from 2006 that isn't rotted away already. Surprising. Nice job Eric!
Just did a front wheel bearing on my 04 Toyota RAV4 (pressed in-kind) and I wish I or someone else had been there before me like this car. I live in a rust belt state as well and there were some not-so-SMA family-friendly words I used to get it off. With all the years of rusty crusties, that sucker fought me.
Enjoyed as usual. Thanks Eric
Awesome repair, nice video. Take care thanks 😊
Nice to work on a vehicle when the undercarriage is minus rust and corrosion.
Good fix Mr. O!
Great video Eric o as always.
Nice job showing us how to do it without tearing our hair out, the flag bolt tip was great and getting some weight on the suspension before tightening that last bolt! Thank you!
another professional job done by an up state New Yorker, best workforce in the USA !!!!
Thats a good AirGun you have. The Thor. Nice
3:17 I would probably get my finger chopped. Didn`t see this one coming. Thanks, Eric.
You know you make it look easy plus you have a lift. It's a lot nicer working on your feet then sitting on the ground when your in your 60's. Air tools are great too. I really like your videos they are very educational.
Good job mr.o
Great job! It’s like you’ve been doing this for decades! I always enjoy your videos. Happy New Year!
I think those neon green gloves had some magic juju in them. 😁. Thanks as always, Eric!
Very informative video
Great job as usual. You might need to take another vacation because you seem a little uptight. Enjoy watching you work and listening to your commentary. You make the non New York vehicle look like a breeze to get done.
He just had a pot of coffee
Happy New Year Eric and family.
Okay, you keep saying you want comments, so, I like watching you work. You a bit funny, but still very educational. Like I said I like watching you work. I am also from New York, about a half hour from Lake George in Thurman N.Y. Have a good day. Keith.
Thanks Eric, great info
Quadra-Drive II. Electronic locking axle, front and rear. Locking transfer case. Best 4WD system Jeep ever made.
nice job more mrs O
I wanna go for a ride. Good job
Had to fit replace both rear swing arms to nissan x trail 2009 earlier in the year, at the same time done brake lines flexes and solid, rear hub bearing, splash guards, drop links, new discs, pads renewed the calipers, and a few more bits and bobs. It was my First time doing a job like that so took me a looong time. Mainly because i live oh about 10 metres away from the sea and everything and i mean everthing was rusted solid. Done the work in the local pub car par, raining, splashes from waves coming over the sea wall. All done with hand tools. The 2 swing arm camber bolts took me two days to cut out. But got it done and car passed its MOT after handbrake line and to be replaced.
thanks Eric
