- I planted three American Persimmon Trees in Spring of 2016. Two are MALE & one is a FEMALE(bears fruit). This year the female tree is LOADED! Difference between Male/Female is discussed throughout and specific photos of each are shown at the end of the video. #persimmonfruit #persimmon #fruit #lakeeriechestnuts #deeraddiction #foodplots
Looks awesome. I have 8 that are probably a hair smaller than yours that I planted as 1 year bare roots in 2017. They were very stagnant until I put them in tree tubes. I am convinced that in a cold climate the benefits of the tubes are huge for persimmon. In 2021 I direct seeded them into about 100 tubes, they've been totally neglected and I still have about an 85% survival rate.
Can't help but chime in on your videos. I don't know many people in real life that get excited talking about this stuff.
Hope you're having a great summer.
I’ve never tried direct-seeding persimmon into tubes. I’ll have to try that out. 85% is a great survival rate for any species!
Summer is going well but busy as can be. Love this time of year!
John your Persimmons are doing great.
I have planted several this spring and there doing well, have them in grow tubes zone 5A just hoping they look as good as yours some day. 👍🏻
I’m sure they will! Watching them grow is part of the fun.
I have to go check my persimmon for blossoms, was thinking they might be to young yet but they are close to that size.
🤞🏻 get out there and check! They’re pretty small and on the underside of leaves.
I'm in Michigan and I planted mine in 2021 and I had male flowers last year and a ton of male flowers this year. I also have one female with a few flowers this year. Some look like they are growing fruit so we will see if any fully ripen.
How old were your trees when you discovered they were male/female?
I would store the trees in the nursery and up-pot throughout the years for selective planting.
I have one year old persimmon trees in tree pots now.
Thanks for the video.
They were in their 7th leaf(completed their 6th year) when they produced their first fruit/blossoms.
What zone are they good for
USDA Growing Zones 4-9.
Hi John,, been a while. & THANKS for this video!
Sorry for the multiple questions,,, but this is need-to-know- info,,,,, that's needed.
I was hoping that you would pick one male & a female blossom to make a close-up comparison.
A good friend has 5 huge very healthy American Persimmon trees in his yard but he never had any fruit. They blossom, buy maybe no cross pollination? Now that I watched your video, I'll get over to his place & make a comparison.
It Looks like your male tree blossom is much longer,,,,, & the female is wider, with a 'bulbet' in the center when it opens? ?(correct term?)
Questions,,,,
Will both male & female trees produce edible size fruit?
If so, will both M & F 'fruits' produce viable seeds?
& if so, again, will those seeds produce the same gender tree?
I'm just trying to figure out how I could get a cross pollinator seedling growing, & to make 100% sure it will be the correct gender,,,, without waiting 5-8 years for flowers, for proof!?
Also wondering,,,,
Do you have any Kiwis,,,, that are producing edible fruits?
I have a massive healthy Kiwi growing all over my small bridge trellis. This year, it produced thousands of full grown flowers but the same deal happened to it. NO pollinator,, & all of the flowers fell off. No fruits again.
SO,,,, how do I go about finding, making sure that I buy/ start/ or plant an opposite gender tree? (lol,, 3-4 more videos?)
BTW,,,, I have 4 very healthy Pawpaw trees growing out back. The hundreds of flowers were just about ready to open & my orchard got hit by a heavy frost. Every blossom shriveled up, & fell off. I only have 4 very small 'fruits' that are still hanging on, but without proper pollination, they will most likely shrivel & fall. Another BUMMER :
Tough Year for the PawPaws!
ONLY the FEMALE Persimmon will produce fruit. YES, you can graft female onto male(although I haven't done so to this point) - and you'd definitely know you had a female. Your description of the blossoms is correct - although both blossoms are small, the male are more numerous and hang almost vertically downward, while the female blossoms have the baby "fruit" in the middle of the blossom and are much larger, more spaced out and can face sideways/upward/downward.
I don't have any Kiwis. Best of luck with those!
How old are these?
If you measure like human years, they just turned 8. They are in their 9th Leaf(first year of sprouting would be their first leaf).
Can a female be grafted on the males?
Yes, although I haven't done so to this point.
