Looks like a mostly Chinese tree. Is it a named cultivar?
It is mostly Chinese grown from seed obtained from an orchard growing only Dunstan chestnuts (which are mostly Chinese).
When can i separate twins? How long are they dependent on the nut? I have twins about 3 -4 inch tall
If the spots are in a line is a doe If they are Scattered its a buck

Skunks are predatory ! Animals that have Rabies usually can't swallow, But are more aggressive so IDK. Had one in my yard few wks back and he looked sick so I gave him the 22 mag!! I didn't want whatever he had to transfer to anything else and I disposed of him properly wearing robber gloves.

No problem with the double batch of cicadas in your area? They keep saying on the news how harmless they are, but they fail to mention how they attack trees and suck the sap out of them and kill the branches. A couple of years ago they killed the main vertical leader branch on one of my chestnuts, it branches horizontally now, maybe at some point it will continue to grow vertically, but not yet.
I haven’t heard the first locust this year. Maybe they’re coming - we’ll see.
John as an organic farmer who just started a food forest with 256 different type of trees shrubs etc. I admire the detail of this video thanks for making it.
Wow! That’s a ton of planting. Hope you’re documenting it with video! Best of luck growing.
Can you make a video showing us how to cross pollinate by hand to my other trees cause I don’t think they’re close enough. I know I take the Catkin but where do I put it on the other tree? What does the female flower look like?
I’ll try to do tha video. You take the catkin(long fuzzy thing) and rub it across the tiny yellow objects sticking out of what looks like a miniature chestnut bur (that is the female flower). Your bur is ready when the tiny yellow objects start to open outward to be almost flat (like an open flower).
@@johnsangl Thank You ! I figured it out
So just for conformation maybe you could make a video on pollinating by hand to make sure I;m doing it right ! Thank You
Very Impressive !!
Thanks Dan! I love watching the progress.
Appreciate the update walk through 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks for watching and following the channel. It is appreciated. I love sharing the progress and my ups/downs.
Do you ever have to mow in an area like at 19:47 or does the grass top out at about waist high? I'm thinking about buying a couple acres for a future home site (it will be over a decade before I can begin building) to get a head start on growing my oak trees.
I do have to know areas that have the grass seed out at about 6ft tall. For that, the first pass is with my brush hog followed up with the riding lawn mower. It takes about three weeks and three cuts to go from uncut meadow to lawn-type cut.
hey John, I moved some of my chestnut seedlings outside and swapped them into 3x3x8 containers with dirt from where they will eventually be planted. Many of them have wilted, lost leaves, and started to brown. Any idea what would cause that? I know they have plenty of water (maybe too much). thanks!
Too much sun? Too much water? Transplant shock? I’d guess in that order. Sorry you’re having these problems.
"Gangsta Lean" Classic!!!!
That’s the type of orchard we are running here in Corry, PA. It’s tough living in the “814”! Haha
Do the sawtooths need a pollinator?..i thought they were self fertile
From Google AI: Sawtooth oak trees (Quercus serrata) are wind-pollinated and monoecious, meaning they have both male and female flowers on the same tree. The male flowers, called staminate flowers, bloom in hanging catkins, while the female flowers, called pistillate flowers, bloom in small spikes. Both types of flowers are yellow-green and bloom in mid-spring. However, sawtooth oaks usually only set fruit when another sawtooth oak nearby is available to act as a pollen donor. For effective wind pollination, it's recommended to plant at least 15 sawtooth oaks per planting, with each seedling spaced 15-20 feet apart.

I ❤❤❤ deer, especially their cute little fawns, & this little buck is too cute! Thanks for sharing your video with everyone! 🌝
This was an AMAZING ENCOUNTER that I’ll never forget!!
Nice update John
Thanks John! Time for you to post a video of your place!
@@johnsangl sounds like a challenge. How can I be a trend setter like you? Your hat ended the up early hair day that I thought was a new trend.
You’re gonna love them sawtooths !
Can’t wait for them to start producing. Next decade should be a lot of fun!
I’m working on growing my best corn ever this year - hoping Mather nature gets me some good rains. It’s planted, sprouted, fertilized w 19-19-19 and sprayed. In about 10 days, I’ll apply Urea (when it’s about 10-12” tall).
Hello John, have you been getting alot of rain in your area? Every other day here so far my young trees are doing ok, good thing we have well draining sandy soil. Your Orchard looks great. 👍🏻
I wouldn’t say “a lot” of rain, but we’ve had a couple timely rains recently. Fingers crossed 🤞🏻
Good job, John! I hope to start making similar videos after 2-3 years. For now, I have only three established trees.
Start making the videos now and let people grow with you!
Your trees and property are looking great!
I agee! Love watching them grow and start producing!
How old are these?
If you measure like human years, they just turned 8. They are in their 9th Leaf(first year of sprouting would be their first leaf).
Hi John,, been a while. & THANKS for this video! Sorry for the multiple questions,,, but this is need-to-know- info,,,,, that's needed. I was hoping that you would pick one male & a female blossom to make a close-up comparison. A good friend has 5 huge very healthy American Persimmon trees in his yard but he never had any fruit. They blossom, buy maybe no cross pollination? Now that I watched your video, I'll get over to his place & make a comparison. It Looks like your male tree blossom is much longer,,,,, & the female is wider, with a 'bulbet' in the center when it opens? ?(correct term?) Questions,,,, Will both male & female trees produce edible size fruit? If so, will both M & F 'fruits' produce viable seeds? & if so, again, will those seeds produce the same gender tree? I'm just trying to figure out how I could get a cross pollinator seedling growing, & to make 100% sure it will be the correct gender,,,, without waiting 5-8 years for flowers, for proof!? Also wondering,,,, Do you have any Kiwis,,,, that are producing edible fruits? I have a massive healthy Kiwi growing all over my small bridge trellis. This year, it produced thousands of full grown flowers but the same deal happened to it. NO pollinator,, & all of the flowers fell off. No fruits again. SO,,,, how do I go about finding, making sure that I buy/ start/ or plant an opposite gender tree? (lol,, 3-4 more videos?) BTW,,,, I have 4 very healthy Pawpaw trees growing out back. The hundreds of flowers were just about ready to open & my orchard got hit by a heavy frost. Every blossom shriveled up, & fell off. I only have 4 very small 'fruits' that are still hanging on, but without proper pollination, they will most likely shrivel & fall. Another BUMMER :<(
Tough Year for the PawPaws! ONLY the FEMALE Persimmon will produce fruit. YES, you can graft female onto male(although I haven't done so to this point) - and you'd definitely know you had a female. Your description of the blossoms is correct - although both blossoms are small, the male are more numerous and hang almost vertically downward, while the female blossoms have the baby "fruit" in the middle of the blossom and are much larger, more spaced out and can face sideways/upward/downward. I don't have any Kiwis. Best of luck with those!
Can a female be grafted on the males?
Yes, although I haven't done so to this point.
Are you fucking stupid? That deer is not big at all and is very young he had all the potential to actually grow into something but you killed him for 12 little points. Fucking stupid
Looks awesome. I have 8 that are probably a hair smaller than yours that I planted as 1 year bare roots in 2017. They were very stagnant until I put them in tree tubes. I am convinced that in a cold climate the benefits of the tubes are huge for persimmon. In 2021 I direct seeded them into about 100 tubes, they've been totally neglected and I still have about an 85% survival rate. Can't help but chime in on your videos. I don't know many people in real life that get excited talking about this stuff. Hope you're having a great summer.
I’ve never tried direct-seeding persimmon into tubes. I’ll have to try that out. 85% is a great survival rate for any species! Summer is going well but busy as can be. Love this time of year!
John your Persimmons are doing great. I have planted several this spring and there doing well, have them in grow tubes zone 5A just hoping they look as good as yours some day. 👍🏻
I’m sure they will! Watching them grow is part of the fun.
I have to go check my persimmon for blossoms, was thinking they might be to young yet but they are close to that size.
🤞🏻 get out there and check! They’re pretty small and on the underside of leaves.
I'm in Michigan and I planted mine in 2021 and I had male flowers last year and a ton of male flowers this year. I also have one female with a few flowers this year. Some look like they are growing fruit so we will see if any fully ripen.
How old were your trees when you discovered they were male/female? I would store the trees in the nursery and up-pot throughout the years for selective planting. I have one year old persimmon trees in tree pots now. Thanks for the video.
They were in their 7th leaf(completed their 6th year) when they produced their first fruit/blossoms.
What zone are they good for
USDA Growing Zones 4-9.
Really interesting . 3 trees going into year 5 this summer !! Hoping for chestnuts 🌰 finally this summer
Good luck! You should be seeing the Catkins at least start to develop by now - if you see the long slender flowers forming, look at the bases of them for miniature chestnut burs - if you see those on at least 2 trees, you should get chestnuts this Fall!
I planted some Hazelnut trees this spring with the tubes. They are doing well, but with your advice I will take off the tubes and put some fencing around them instead. Thanks for the excellent video!
My hazelnuts responded VERY well to removal of the tube. I hope you have the same experience - best of luck!
$215 for the bag of corn. Bought the same one at the Union City Coop
Btw there is a state trooper out of the corry barracks, Greg Hoover, who refurbishes old john deere 7000 planters. He cuts them down to 2 row planters. They work AWESOME for corn and soybeans. I’ve been using mine for a few years now and it works AWESOME.
Yep! Crazy - but it does plant a pretty big plot. I’ve thought about upgrading the planter for sure but I’ve struggled with breaking up w the money when the old one still does the job.
Ohhh the "Joys" of repairs....I feel your pain John in things not coming apart easily. I giggled to myself thinking..."made in China"....then you show the "made in China" Sticker.....I'm still smirking ..glad you got it out. 😊
Haha! I was thinking the same thing the whole time I was struggling to get the part removed…. Hopefully the welder can fix it up for me.
@@johnsangl will be looking for the update! 😁😜 And reassembly challenges!
Did you have any problems with cicada damage to young chestnut trees? Here in Missouri I have yet to estimate damage. A late frost wiped out catkin development for a second straight year
We really haven’t had a lot of cicadas yet here in NW PA. We’ll see what happens as the summer heats up though. It’s looks like I’ll have a good crop so that probably means the cicadas will try to ruin it for me 🤪
@@johnsangl thanks for the response. Internet says cicadas can damage fruit trees including chestnuts. I am evaluating if any trees were killed
I would have tried removing the outer snap ring and driven the shaft away from the inner one. Making it easier to remove?
I definitely tried that! It didn’t seem to help. I also tried resting the broken end on something to take lateral pressure off - it was just very tightly in there and I think slightly bent which didn’t help. The slight bend on that side is also getting addressed by my welder/fabrication guy.
You look whooped. 😂 Tools needed: Removable forks for bucket. Snap ring pliers One day a rotary tiller. (The are awesome)
Haha - I WAS! I had snap ring pliers but broke the tips off trying to get the stupid snap ring off. Great suggestions on the removable forks and the tiller!
@@johnsangl pliers made in China too? 🤣
Hope you found a good welder 👍🏻
I think I did - farmer friend highly recommended him so that’s a good start.
hello
Hi
My stratification was a total failure this year. I will use sand this winter as a medium to keep the mold away. I had success with it two years ago
Maybe I’ll try both methods and see how they do head-to-head. Where did you get your sand?
Just a bag of play sand last time
I had about 25% success with stratification that I used (normal topsoil). There was a lot of mold but conditions were not ideal (of the small refrigerator). Now I have moved out west and my dream of a chestnut orchard has been dashed. Hope you have better luck next year.
I used the same potting mix John uses , mixed with peat moss . I did a test on my seeds . Gave half, a bath in dilute bleach , and the other half a bath in dilute Hydrogen peroxide before stratifying . practically zero mold . Dunstan seeds , now ready to up pot . Trying 3 gallon grow bags this time . Good luck to all !! Thank you John for a wealth of info !!
@@dansmith2966glad to hear of your success! Good luck growing!
Thank you. New to your channel. I have really enjoyed the video. What would be your thoughts of growing wheat or a similar culture in between? How about clover or berries? Thank you for your presentation.
Wheat would probably require more tillage than I'd be comfortable with. Clover/berries would probably be fine.

Oof!
hey John, orchard looks great! I'm into second year Chestnut trees, all planted for wildlife. All trees are doing well so far. I have thot about increasing my plantings for so commercial profit. What sources do you use to market your chestnuts? Wholesale to distributors, direct sell to local customers, etc? Thanks for your help
CZcams & Facebook are my main channels of marketing at this point. Best of luck!
Looking good! My chestnut trees in Oregon are looking similar. I do have to use irrigation to get our chestnut trees going out here in the Willamette valley.
Thanks! You get to grow a much broader variety of chestnuts out there in the blight-free world of Oregon.
