You really could say that The Fox and the Hound was sadder because it was about a friendship not meant to be while the title character from Old Yeller was a good pet for sure until he had to get shot as a form of euthanasia.

This movie made me cry when I was little and it still makes me cry. It was a hard story against segregation in the deep south. The book was even worse, everyone gets killed.

When my kids were little (in the 1980s) we bought a bunch of books and cassett tapes for them to use. The fox and the hound was one of them. We used to play the cassetts on the drive from New Jersey to visit family in western Massachusetts. It made the drive tolerable. Love this song from that time!!!
