To this day I cannot watch that scene where the lady leaves todd in the woods, without bawling my eyes out. The poem about how she needed him as much as he needed her, because she was lonely. Its such a sacrifice for her, and hes so scared and doesn't understand and probably thinks he did something wrong. Its just heart breaking.

People are always going on with Bambi's mom. For me, it was the Fox and the Hound that broke me. And it makes me cry even today, so I feel with you. Yes, especially the scene were they seperate. I still find it worse than Lion King. In Lion King Mufasa is dead, that's it, but here? They know the other is still alive and they still can't see each other again. And they can only hope the other is doing well.

Compared to the original story, it's practically a Teletubbies episode.
(Original story has Vixie and Tod's kids die of smoke inhalation by Slade, Chief killed by the train, Copper chasing Tod until the fox dies of exhaustion and then Slade, when he's old and has to go to a retirement home, putting Copper down by shooting him in the head(they didn't allow animals and Copper was sickly after chasing Tod). Fun bedtime story, right?

@@phousefilms Not even just Todd and Vixen's kids. See, he tries again with another female fox after losing Vixen. And Slade also kills all of *them* too.
He doesn't try again after that, and pretty much lives out what's left of his life alone and miserable in a world that is turning increasingly more hostile and unfamiliar thanks to modernization. All that remains from the life he used to know is getting chased by Slade and Copper, and because of that it becomes something he oddly looks forward to.

I hate to say it, since she was trying to save his life, but if it wasn't a Disney movie, what she did would be criminally negligent. Tod had no concept of how to survive on his own and probably would not have lasted more than a couple days to a week before either starving to death or getting picked off by a bigger predator. That's why people shouldn't have wild animals as pets (yes I know she saved his life, but this is a Disney movie not real life), because eventually you won't be able to take care of them and they can't survive on their own.

  • @thehedgehogsdilemma9478

A lot of people don’t know this but this Disney movie was actually based on a novel of the same name by Daniel P. Mannix that was first published in 1967. In preparation for writing the novel the author actually studied foxes up close in wild as well as ones that had already been tamed and even thoroughly researched a wide variety of hunting techniques and studied the ways hounds hunt and track foxes in order to go the extra mile for authenticity, seeking to ensure his characters acted as realistically as possible. Little did he know that by 1981 his novel would go on to be adapted into one of the greatest Disney animated cult classics of all time.
On a sidenote, Mannix’s 1958 book “Those About To Die” would later be adapted into the popular Ridley Scott film Gladiator in the year 2000. The book was re-printed as The Way Of The Gladiator in 2001 to tie more closely to the Ridley Scott adaptation.

This film came out at the time when Disney was going through changes. The old guard of animators who started under Walt were retiring and had trained the new era of animators like Andreas Deja, Glenn Keane, and Eric Goldberg and this film clearly shows it was done by two entirely different groups of people.
After this film was released to lukewarm reception Don Bluth would leave Disney and take a whole bunch of animators with him to start his own studio and would actually challenge Disney while also making great films like The Secret of NIMH, An American Tail, and Land Before Time.

Nya, I know those kinds of people. There is a fine line between the two and it is surprising how quickly some people cross it. In Spain, hunters are the main motive for crimes against nature and human deaths in rural areas. They believe they are the owners of the forests, even those who are protected by law, and they fire indiscriminately every time they hear something move, without warning. Every year there are many deaths of families who were having a picnic in nature, ornithologists, photographers, people who were looking for mushrooms...
I remember a television report where they talked about it and that made me very angry. The groups of hunters basically excused themselves saying “They wouldn't have died if they hadn't entered the forest. We don't know why people would want to enter a forest if is not to kill something ".
That is why in some autonomous communities hunters are now prohibited and it's likely that the ban will soon spread throughout the country.

You can sort of tell in the scene where copper approaches chiefs body he sounds more distraught that chief is injured rather than happy hes alive. Chief also is completely still in the scene and makes no noise this is because the scene was already animated with his death in mind, and they went back and animated his eyes opening to show he was alive.

The Fox and the Hound is tied with Moana in being my most favorite Disney movie ever. I've always loved it to pieces, especially bc it's so unconventional by Disney standards. I think the ending scene with Copper standing over Tod to stop Amos from shooting him to be so powerful, especially as the turning point is done with no dialogue, and no music. It's just such a quiet moment, especially after the action of the bear fight, and that's what makes it stand out to me. They just let the animation and expressions speak for itself, and it didn't dumb itself down for kids. I also think it just has a really mature, realistic, and bittersweet ending, and that's what I love about it. Tod and Copper didn't really get to have their cake and eat it too, Disney magic and love didn't conquer all, but they still came through for each other when it mattered. And I really love that there were no true villains in this. Antagonists, yes, but no one's just straight up evil. Amos is a bit hot-tempered and his anger gets the better of him, but he did genuinely believe that he was defending his chickens from a real threat, and imo, the love and bond he has with his dogs is true and strong, so you can totally understand why Copper was willing to risk his life fighting the bear for him. Chief and Copper's relationship is also strong, and I really get the family bond that Copper has with him and Amos. At the end of the day, everyone was flawed, and no one was really 100% in the right. The slow build of the beginning and the way it showcases the atmosphere of the movie is great. It's just super underrated imo, and I think more ppl need to give it a chance. If you like more somber and poignant movies, I think this one's great for that.

Fun fact: Originally, Chief was going to die from the train like in the book. However, the older, head animators thought killing off a main character, didn't fit Disney's image, while the newer animators believed he *had* to die to give Copper the proper motivation for wanting revenge. It was one of many hot arguements between, the old guard and the new guard, causing several to either leave the industry, or find work elsewhere. In the case of Don Bluth, he went on to make his own animated features, classics like _The Secret of NIMH, An American Tail,_ and _The Land Before Time._

I always tear up at the ending because it reminds me of my Chihuahua. She was the only friend I ever had in my entire childhood and when she passed away when I was 20, I was sad. I was devastated because she was always there when I needed her.

Very underrated film imo. One of my favourite childhood films.
