  • ** Recorded January 11, 2020 ** Come with me as I tour a bird’s nest house in Malaysia outside of Penang. This is something I have been wanting to do for a very long time! I rode past so many of these places on my tour that getting to see inside one answered a lot of questions. So much fun!

Have any of you never heard of what edible bird's nest is? What are your thoughts on it?

China and HK are the 2 boggart marketed for the nest. Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia are the biggest exporters.

Very expensive delicacy! Good for soup! Has far as I know us Cantonese relish this dish and has medicinal properties as I was told.

@@pandabear153 Hokkien delicacy. I had "ean-o" in Penang Hokkien a lot as a child. They sold at Chinese Chemists... Pink or white looking like straw jelly. You need to soak the clumps in cold water for days, then extract the tiny hair of the swallows. The clean swallow's nest is then steamed with rock sugar crystals for hours. I love it. It tastes like very fine liquid jelly and it's slightly scented.

It's actually birds'saliva that was harvested. CHina now is the largest market for this delicaciy. Once picked, feathers are picked from the 'bird nest', then rinsed out in water until clear. The way to cook is double boiled with rock sugar and/ginger. My husband like it savory so he have with a piece of skinless chicken with a pinch of salt and also double boiled for 1 and half - 2 hours. Double boiling is to cook in a closed little porcelain urn ( you might see this in crockery dept in Chinese supermarket) in a bath of water in pot.

Bird hotels are in many towns in Malaysia. Free boarding for the birds. The nest is 1000 to 2000 USD per kilo. I guess

Matt, you need to know something about our jungles. There those unruly ones and the disclipned ones. The disclipned ones grow in neat rows in properly and kindly spaced out norm, you know sort of, social distancing. 😄😄😄👅
Did you try "bak kut teh?", the pork rib soup. Its an authentic made in Malaysia dish. You had the Hokkien prawn mee which you slurped down the soup. The Assam Laksa must have been unforgettable - fat rice noddles with a some veg in spicy tamarind soup and boiled fish meal and the topping with prawn paste.
Hokkien language originates from Fukien. Similarly, Taiwanese speak this language. Surely you know that Mandrin is an academic language and is a Chinese national language.
"tar-pou" means food pack to take away. It can also mean "finish or you are done with .. " tar-pou liow", a goner or kaput. Its actually a derivative from Cantonese (Guandong) language. Stay safe and good journey.

oh, both the bak kut teh and laksa look really good... i love assam laksa but we usually have the other coconut milk curry kind here, which is good, but the tamarind really makes the assam laksa pop. can't wait til i can visit M'sia again...

Sungai Petani means River Petani, it is likely that the name came from Pattani, the name of a seaside town in southern Thailand.

Investing into bird nest house is lucrative but risky. Why ? Swiftlets has the final decision. These are swiftlets that pick up the echolocation (microphone - outside). Once within the bird nest house , the second echolocation ( microphone - inside ) will draw them into the house. Swiftlets eyes doesn't see in the dark , how these swiftlets decide ? This is interesting part, swiftlet likes cleanliness. Those expertise in bird nesting house place lots of attention on the echolocation ,temperature, odour, running water and safe environment. The next thing, swiftlets starts coming through the special door ( facing the sun in the morning ) part of lowering the temperature. Notice plank were used at the wall and beams. This is done to eliminate the corner between the wall/beam and floor joint. Harvesting bird nest in the shape of half moon ensured quality and pricing. There's always some broken bird nest , some would be salvaged and reshaped to half moon. It's tedious work. Everything I know about bird nest house while I was doing restructuring of a bird nest house in 3 of the 5 storey Ee Yan Sang building, Jln Chulia, Georgetown. Annually, the Chinese medical and healthcare company garnered abt RM 1 million from this branch alone. By having a well managed hotel for swiftlets to stay. It's more lucrative for those swiftlet expert/consultant coz once they see the location ,they knows the potential and wants 30% of the harvest. These bird nest house will be clean and harvest monthly.

The wrong spelling of an English word is a Malay word and there are thousands of them. Of BTW the Malay word "Cat" means paint and the Malay " Air " means water, same spelling as English words but pronounce differently.
