    hokkien 闽南语 is one of chinese languages mainly spoken in southern fujian province, northeastern guangdong province and taiwan. it is not a dialect of mandarin. Although the word hokkien means fujian (the name of the province) and that's how they pronounce it in hokkien. But in english at least it refers to the language that is spoken in southern part of province as fujian province has many different languages the chinese in penang brought over hokkien languages

      @@keepitprivate3856 In my opinion, the english translation of Chinese 方言 as dialect is somewhat inaccurate. The Chinese definition of 方言 is 地方语言 that is not official. The fact that it's local and non official does not disqualifies it as an language. As most linguists will agree. The so called Chinese languages are really a language family that is called sinitic language family and it has many languages within it. With that being said, mandarin is not the official, putonghua is. And there is a difference between putonghua and mandarin. Mandarin is 官话 in chinese and there are ,many types of mandarin. the dialect spoken in szechuan is a type of southwestern mandarin but it is not putonghua. Those subdivisions of mandarins are indeed dialects but cantonese hokkien hakka wu languages etc are languages within the same sinitic family as mandarin and each of them have their dialects too within it.

    Most Chinese in north and south of West Malaysia mostly speak Hokkien but for North and South Hokkien had different accent. Chinese in East Malaysia mostly speak Foochow,Hokkein,Hakka.
    In center of West Malaysia most Chinese speak Cantonese specially in Ipoh and Kuala Lumper..
    Our family are from Guangzhou but our whole village speak Hakka,most Malaysian Chinese can speak few kind of dialect such as Hokkien,Foochow,Teochew (from FuJian province) Cantonese, Hakka (Guangzhou province) also there is some from Guangxi and Hainan province speak their own dialect.Most of the new generation now speak Mandarin and they didn't learn much of the dialect that where their family comes from.
    I'm still lucky that i still can speak/read some Mandarin, Hakka,Cantonese,Malay,English (Hokkein,Teochew just understand 40-50%) but lots of my friend they can speak more dialect or language then me.

I'm from East Malaysia and mixed in with the Malay dialects there's around 2 dozen native languages like Iban, Kayan, Kelabit, Melanau, etc etc. I speak Foochow with the older immediate family members, Hokkien or Mandarin with friends, my wife is Cantonese but her mum is Hakka....... @omni3670 Před 3 lety

      Hahaha....on the contrary, you could say Mandarin is a dialect of Hokkien! Before Mandarin, there was the Hokkien language . Mandarin is a relatively new language. Linguists say that Hokkien is not a dialect so much as it is a language in its own right, just like Cantonese and the rest of the so-called Chinese dialects that are mutually not easily understood by the other

    • @zeiitgeist
      @zeiitgeist Před 3 lety

      Northern Malaysian Hokkien mostly comes from the Zhangzhou variety, while Southern Malaysian Hokkien is from the Quanzhou variety, having parents that speak one or the other is funny I might say but there is a reason for the difference, but there are people that think this divide sprouted out of Malaysia...
      @Om Ni That is the problem I have with the definitions of dialects and language, when Hokkien, Cantonese or Mandarin is labelled a distinct language, the whole thing becomes politicised in such a way to say they are different ethnic groups bluffed into becoming Han Chinese, but people don't say that the these differences are the history of evolution and divergence from our ancestors past...

    Don't want to be a downer, but it is good effort that someone volunteered to show you around, but I will say this, as a local Han Chinese, most are unaware of history and appreciate their other brethren cultures on a very superficial level, those who see themselves in the middle are the usual victims and have since become diluted, that is the shortcomings of creolisation - everything gets blurry and weaker, so if you want to get the clearer picture, might I suggest, actively talking to people who stick to tight communities, Malay kampungs, Tamil, Malayali, Punjab enclaves, Asli (Indigenous) areas and Chinese towns.
    Every state have their own distribution of different cultures even different Chinese diaspora, but I will only speak from the Chinese perspective. Anyhow the population of Chinese in Malaysia comprises of Hokkien (Fujian), Cantonese (Guangzhou), Hakka (Kejia), Teochew (Chaozhou), Hainanese (Hainan), Hokchiew (Fuzhou), etc, they are arranged in descending order - all the anglicized terms are based on their respective Chinese dialects; I have put their Mandarin equivalent in parenthesis.
    As for demographic data, Kedah - Teochew, Taiping - Teochew and Hokkien, Penang is dominated by Teochew and Hokkien (Zhanzhou), Malacca - Hokkien, Ipoh - Cantonese and Hakka, Kuala Lumpuer - Cantonese, Johor - Hokkien (Quanzhou), Sabah - Hokchiew, anything else is spread around in between.
    Food wise, it depends on localities too, many have their own specialty, don't listen to those that only have a partial view of it; see what you find and try it, because some people are restricted to certain food items - they have their biases in their own way. But in short, Mamak/Indian food tend to be very expensive relatively for their meat products - for who knows what reason other than maybe the amount of spice their put in, Hawker affair is mostly on the Chinese view, while Nasi Padang/Lemak/Kukus/etc are usually are the Malay affair, then you have other in the mix like Nyonya (Mostly Straits Chinese food with local ingredients) or Kristang food.
    This is only from a local Chinese that analyses from a historical point of view and considers the movement of people, you want the rest, I guess you can go ask around.
