- Metroidvania fans have been spoiled in recent years with the likes of Persia: The Lost Crown, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, and many, many others. Surgent Studios’ debut game, Tales of Kenzera: Zau, definitely isn’t good enough to be able to sit atop that lofty perch in that hallowed company, with core pillars like platforming, combat, and exploration feeling too simplistic for the game’s own good.
But though it has its issues, Tales of Kenzera also leaves its mark. Boasting a genuinely affecting and well-told story, and a rich and vibrant world that you want to learn more about, there’s enough here for Tales of Kenzera to be worth a look, even with its issues. - Hry

My opinion of this game will be purely based on how easy or hard it is to platinum. Does anyone know off the top of their head?
5/10. I got the plat in less than 10 hours without a guide. There are some parts that are pretty hard like very long obstacles you have to go through without dying. If you die you have to restart the obstacle all over again. Those were the toughest things to do in the game.
I bet a sizeable portion of people who are on this "no sweet baby inc" train were the same one's who criticized people who loudly declared they wouldn't buy Hogwarts Legacy because of JK Rowland's views. Funny how that works.

@@ChrisCypher That's a pretty nonsensical comparison. JKR has nothing to do with gaming in general and had nothing to do with the HL game as far as i know. (aside from the devs using her IP) SBI on the other hand is a company that works in the gaming industry and consults game devs. They are directly involved with the games they work on.
Also, the HL boycott wasn't criticised because they simply proclaimed that they won't buy the game. They were criticised because they were harassing people who bought and played the game.
I bet "Tales of Kenzera: ZAU" is going to flop badly....and it has.

They are brought into a studio to do 1 of 3 things.
1) Sensitivity readers that will go through your plot and inform you if anything would make any one group feel marginalized, insulted, or underrepresented. This is bad on the grounds that if say it's a story set in ye old London from 70 some odd years ago then they will demand you add random minorities that will somehow be there to make up anywhere from 15-40% of the overall cast of characters. A perfect example of this would be them turning Deadshot black in the suicide squad game and claiming that the one we've known for years in the previous Arkham games was an imposter. It was unnecessary and they literally could have used several other black villians if they wanted to. They just like race swapping. They never do it in reverse and add white or Asian people to a cast though.
2)They are brought in to "create" minor/side plots that will give them a higher standing to receive DEI investment loans from larger groups that have earmarked massive funds to change the culture of western nations to follow what they think is right, what the population actually wants be damned. The example here is that it is widely believed that they had a hand in the God awful side missions in Spiderman 2. Deaf girl and gay prom aside the entire game seems to have gone out of its way to completely destroy Peter and raise Miles to be a better Spider-Man in every way. Why do this unless you hate the fact that everyone still likes Peter better. You should raise Miles up and not drag Peter down. This is going to create resentment towards an arguably great character, that new suit of Miles is ugly as hell though 😂.
3)This one is the doozy. They will watch over and interact with the studios they work with to change how they work. They will listen to conversations and will report to the heads of HR any conversations they feel where "racist, homophobi, or sexist". That was in quotations because something as simple as someone saying that they preferred the look of 2B(NIER A) over Abby(TLOU2) was enough to supposedly get someone in trouble. Sadly this point is almost entirely hearsay because there's only conversations from people that were either fired or let go when the studio laid off their workers when they downsized. This is the only one I'd say take with a grain of salt. They have been caught on video however going to a studios HR and threatening what would happen if they don't get hired. That sounds like a shakedown if I've ever heard it.
There's probably more but this is hopefully an acceptable answer to your question. But i still prefer the shorthand "It's woke so I won't give them my money" 🤣

From an art perspective, who wants a 2d character action game where the character is three inches tall on a large flat screen. Games like Dead Cells or Ori get away with this by utilizing gorgeous art techniques such as 3D pixelation or how HDR is implemented in Ori.
Who plays metroidvania mainly for story/ characters.. gameplay and level design should be the focus

As someone who has actually bought this one (for a pretty low price) I must honestly say that I can't fully understand the praise given to this game in the review....the narrative is oookaaaaayyyy, I guess, but NEVER reaches the heights of other genre competitors like Hollow Knight, Blasphemous or Ori...let alone that of many games out of the genre...knowing that it is a personal story for the developer makes it definitely likeable, but it also makes it even more weird that it isn't more touching....the environments are rather bland, as is the caracter and monster design, which is a shame, because generally I would be very interested in a game that derives it's inspiration from the rich world of African folklore! The controls...well...work somehow, for the most part, but never feel really good somehow, again, compared to better (and sometimes much cheaper!) competitors like Deedlit In Wonder Labyrinth for example....the soundtrack is also pretty...average...so, all in all a "7 out of 10" is probably somewhat too high, I would rather give it...a "5 out of 10"...but I haven't even finished it ,yet, because...well...it just didn't grab me that much, and I'm somewhere between five to six hours into the game, and these are just my subjective thoughts...I would probably not necessarily recommend it, with SO MANY better, similar ganes for even less money out there...

how come the first I ever hear about this game is how it is made by EA and involved sweet baby inc? Like way to insta destroy your reputation. Maybe should have focus a bit more on advertisement and maybe going for an AA studio or indy. Like from this view looks the games does look kinda fun and wow, something based on african culture instead of black washing already existing stuff? Yes, please, but why doing this over gamers worse enemies? This could have been the game that shows the greedy studios how it's done, but nope. Narative over gameplay. Yes you can have a narrative but think of the gamers first.
Take rainbow Billy and the curse of the liviathan, totally woke game, with a story about a transperson that is as subtle as a brick to the face AND YET the gameplay mechanic is so fun and creative that you can overlook that problem.
