    Over the years cars take a beating from the elements. some parts of the country are worse than others. The effect of oxidization on a paint job can be severe but not impossible to fix. Watch along as I take a 99' Toyota Tocoma and restore it's severely weathered paint back to almost the day it came out of the factory.
    I was surprised to find out that this truck is actually red. Total time spent was a few days. This was largely do to the fact that like most of us I have a J. O. B. to work around. but regardless I applied myself and spent $65 saving the owner from a $1500 respray.
    You can follow along with other projects we are working on here.

    $65 in materials and a $1000 in labor bud! You busted your balls on that truck! Great, great job! I'm totally inspired to do my '97 Ram.

      @Calendyr Před 5 lety +1

      65$ in material but you need two polishers worth in between 200$ and 800$ to do the job. If you want to be really cheap you could grab a rotary and a dual action polisher at Harbour Freight for 50$ each. And you need to know how to use the rotary or you will burn through the edges. I would have liked to see a close up on the painted areas he did. Looks good from 10 feet away but impossible to say what it look like up close. Overall it's a great job. The truck looks 20 years younger. I am curious on how long all this took.

    good do it yourself job, a suggestion though when you wet sanding go in 1 direction when you sanding not in cular north to south, and you can buff headlights as well it will help the appeal taking the oxidation off. Yes they will definetly get more dollars for it. Good job

    So...You used compound on there, than waxed it? Does it help keep it looking like how it is now for awhile, even after washes?

    • @PaulFosterrebuilds
      @PaulFosterrebuilds  Před 9 lety +2

      Yes I used 3M Finesse It rubbing compound 1500 grit, there were some spots that I needed to go back and use a heavier rubbing compound once I got the truck into the sun. After that the wax helped protect it. I saw the truck the other day and it is holding up. The key is to keep it clean and I would wax it about 2 times a year depending on exposure. thats really based on information i've picked up over the last year.

      +Dannylo2005 It was pretty straight forward, I used a adjustable speed orbital polisher, and M3 Finessit. then I followed up by a couple small paint chips with some 3m glaze filler. primer and paint all rattle can. finish with some light sanding with 2000 grit SP. clear coat. Hope that helps and remember I'm not a pro but lots of practice will make these jobs easier.

      N B, this was a 1 stage paint job. base coat and polish, if you have a 2 stage paint job then there is paint, buff, clear then polish. Once clear coat breaks down in a 2 stage paint job, you cannot fix it. on that later if it is 1 stage paint job the trick is not to but a ton of pressure on the pad and keep it moving. That is what works for me, other viewers may have some additional suggestions.

    • @abelcelestinjr8810
      @abelcelestinjr8810 Před 8 lety +3

      +jameshone1000 Well to prevent oxidation is to wash car regularly, if you already have oxidation , you will use a clay bar to remove embedded contaminant on your paint, than compound and polish your car finish, than apply a good wax , apply at least 4-5 times a year, that should keep oxidation away, wax will protect your finish from elements

      +Abel Celestin Jr And add a Iron Remover AFTER claying to the regimen....The true cause of the problem...

    • @Calendyr
      @Calendyr Před 5 lety

      Oxidation is caused by exposure to sun and air. The best way to slow it down it to keep the paint protected. The basic protection you can use is a wax. It has to be done once a month (approx.) if you go with that. One step up is to use a paint sealant (synthetic wax) that is polymer based. These usually last up to six months and it's recommended to re-apply every 3 months. Higher level protection would be a ceramic coating, those usually last between 2 to 9 years depending on the product, they have to be applied professionally if you want them to last.

      As long as you keep reapplying a quality sealant and wax as needed, though slowly time will still take its toll, nothing exposed to sun lasts forever.

    He said it took him 20 hours and he is doing it for a 15 yr old kid???? What did he get paid to do the job? $10 an hour would be $200 ; $15 would be 300 plus the extra 100 for materials -- $400 ; would have been better dollar and cent wise (time/labor is a cost) to get it painted. For a vehicle that small, you can easily get a half decent job for around $300-$500; way more bag for the buck. And a half decent paint job would be 1000 times better that someone burning off a clear coat (or base) for 18 hours and doing only doing bare metal touch up.
    Don't get me wrong. The guy worked hard, did a "good" job, etc. But you have to first do a cost anylsis on this stuff before you jump in.
    ----- Great job, but bottom line is, yes it looks a ton better but for close to the cost of a paint job, you have a better looking version of what you had but by taking off a layer of paint (i.e., diminishing the current paint job).
    ------ NOW, if the punk 15 year did it himself, then good on him (out $60 in materials and its great that we got him away from video games for 20 hours (no loss on labor time). That might make a little more sense. OR maybe in the alternative, if you hanging with the kids or buddies and your just doing the truck kind of to kill time and hang. Again, okay if that is what you enjoy doing with your time... but your time (labor) still needs to be inputted in what it "really cost" to do the job.

    If your going to take the time to do the video why not take the time to present the products that you are applying and the products/tools that you are using, so that someone watching can actually try and do it on their own rather than guess at what you were using or what type of pad or bonnet etc...... I felt like I had to keep watching other videos to get the whole story.
