  • I pulled out all my fountain pens and inks and the gazillion notebooks that go with them and put together a fun stats video for you. I'm talking about the pens I added to my collection, the inks and especially ink samples that seem to grow exponentially, and lastly about my first dibs into specialty nib grinds. Let's go!

    A little update: I have since acquired three more pens. Oopsie. But I also solved the stuck nib problem on my Esties and have sold the Rainforest Estie just yesterday, I kept the Techo nib though.
    I think that’s all! Thanks so much for watching!

      How did you get the stuck nibs out of the Esties? I also have a Techo nib I'd like to move to a different pen, but I can't figure out how to remove it and don't want to force anything. (I do know how to remove nibs ordinarily.)

    • @seemownay
      @seemownay  Před 7 měsíci +2

      Before I reached out to Esterbrook, I had tried to soak my nib in water for quite some time and they recommended to use rubber gloves to remove the nib. It still had some resistance but this time I didn't feel like I was going to ruin the nib. It is also recommended to always turn the section instead of the nib unit. Jowo nibs have threads and just simply screw in. Google Jowo nib unit to see what it looks like, if you need to have a visual.

    Thanks for this! Ideas for approaching the hobby are much appreciated. I agree, the pressure to document sometimes takes away from the joy and excitement of just going ahead and using the ink/pens.

    Simone, THANK YOU so much for sharing with us! I love how you said, "I swatch ink because it's *FUN!!!* " and "This is something I DO because I LIKE IT, not because I HAVE to!" YES!!!
    May you *CONTINUE* to enjoy the journey!!! And I will continue to *LEARN* and enjoy!!! Cheers!

    I love my Lamy 2000 so much as well. I really love seeing how so many of us have such a big variety of tastes in this community, but the one thing most of us can agree on is our love for the Lamy 2000.

    • @seemownay
      @seemownay  Před 7 měsíci

      The question is if those who don't love it, simply sell it?! But I agree, there is a lot of people who are pleasantly surprised by that pen.

      @@seemownayI’m one of the weirdos who don’t like the Lamy 2000. I loved the nib on mine, but the metal grip ended up being a deal breaker, I’d slip down the pen unless I used an uncomfortable death grip. I sold it, and stick with my Pilot and Sailor gold nibs, which I also love and are much more comfortable to hold 😊

      I don't have one, and have no inclination to buy because I just don't like the look of it, and I wouldn't like the metal grip either.@@kimberlymillward7580

    I am now wanting a Pilot Custom 74 in M nib. I already have two of that pen and I think it's a very reliable entry level gold nib pen.
    As long as you're not being irresponsible with your money, I think it's okay to fund this hobby because it brings joy to you. I also started selling pens that I'm not feeling this year and I a more confident to try out different pen nibs. I do get overwhelmed sometimes that's why atm, my pen collection is a bit small which what I like. My ink collection though lol

    This was super interesting! I still can't decide how much I want to track. I will be going through my journal trying to figure out when I got certain things, which will be good to try to keep my spending in check.

    • @seemownay
      @seemownay  Před 7 měsíci

      I want to have a "data sheet" for all my pens, but I'm not super "tracky" about my ink samples. That's just not really something I'm interested in. Especially, the OUT part of the ink samples is very foggy. All of a sudden, the ink isn't in my stash any longer, but did I give it away? Dump it? Empty it? I don't know. It's not important. And I also lose track on fountain pen companion of those. I love tracking my currently inked pens and my pens in that app.

    As a fountain pen enthusiast and person who teaches librarianship and archival studies, I have to say that I was amazed by your record keeping of pen and ink and journal use. I don’t keep such a record besides recording ink in use (sometimes). I loved your diagnostic approach on ink/ pen (&paper?) pairings, but need more time if I was to do that.
    I Especially enjoyed your nib explorations. The Nemosine #6 stub nib is one of my favorite nibs. I bought a few loose nibs but now realize that Boch collars & feeds are maybe impossible to find. Sigh.
    I also love my Journaler nib on an Estie.
    Happy writing in 2024. Schuss

    Another really enjoyable watch : I just love seeing all the inks. I have 6 pens but only love one, and have decided I’m going to go for it and buy one or two more very soon and start buying and trying more inks because I really enjoy that. I’m afraid to try custom nibs too 😂 but am talking myself out of feeling guilty if I do!

      Maybe you should figure out why you don't enjoy so many of your pens so you can go into the next purchase with more knowledge about your preferences.

      @@seemownay I think I have figured it out now after falling down the rabbit hole again after several years of escaping it. My favourite now is my old Parker 51 that writes like butter. I think next up is a Leonardo MZ and then perhaps a demonstrator like a Prera or Custom 74. I also love the Benu Euphorias but I have to pace myself 😸

    I always enjoy watching your videos. I don't really track anything pen or ink wise as I have found that Sailor 14 or 21k medium fine nibs are the absolutely perfect pens for me, so (un)fortunately my fountain pen discovery journey is over.
    There might be other, better pens that suit my tastes but as I find Sailor 14/21k nibs to be 9.95/10 there hardly seems any point looking.
    As for inks my go to for every day use is Dominant Industry Winter Wood. I like the idea of journaling using lots of colours of inks and I own about 10 different bottles at presey. In practice, I find that using a MF nib doesn't show off the colour variation that much, so one blue is much the same as another etc. That's a bit disappointing as trying colours is fun.
    The only thing that I'm curious about for 2024 is trying other colour models of Sailor pens but part of me thinks that having the same pen in different colours is wasteful. I already have 4 Pro Gear slims which are more than enough for my daily writing needs. I suppose that it 'helps' that the pens I like tend to be relatively expensive!

    • @seemownay
      @seemownay  Před 7 měsíci

      I'm way too curious to stop looking even if something is 10/10 for me. But I really think that's great that you found the pen that works. I have one Sailor Pro Gear Slim with a MF nib and I enjoy how fine the line is.
      Maybe branching out to some cheaper pens with broader nibs to enjoy all the beautiful colors inks have to offer would another idea to dabble in.
