What I like about this ultra lite, is the noise factor, greatly reduced,
compared to a gas engine, also the shear simplicity of maintenance.
EDIT: I'm unable to reply in comments lately, so on the
muffler issue, yeah, you could add a muffler, but then that's
significant weight loading and reduces power.
why not just add a muffler?
I always liked the fact that my 4 cyl. 4 pipe Honda Magna motorcycle, was a very quiet motorcycle
@@97VF750My new dirt bike is
uncharacteristically quiet, love
that feature of it, the old bike
wasn't loud by dirt bike standards,
but so much louder.
Loved it Wayne!
that looks awesome well done i love it
I do like the reliability aspect of electric vs two-stroke. That might actually get me up in an ultralight.
True, those weedwacker motors don’t make me feel safe either.
Could not agree more. The safety and reliability of an electric motor is fantastic. I've flown rc for years and when it was all nitro power it was also all problems. Now all my fleet is electric, just plug in the batteries and go.
Completely agree.
I went with the Legal Eagle option.
They are coming out with four stroke engines for these ultralights, I've seen videos about them here.
@@PM-qp5he all pilots practice that.
Thanks for the video
How long is the takeoff run and rate of climb?
I very much enjoyed this video, thanks for sharing🇺🇲🏁🏁🏁😎
Thank You !
That is just amazing electric little aircraft I love it ............
More like a developer’s commercial than an “owner review”.
Nice electric powered, wow this makes sense for an ultralight because ultralights are a simple aircraft for pure enjoyment its not designed for anything else.
One thing I would like on the vid would be a camera on the control panel, so you can see the power usage, otherwise very interesting.
Very nice. Great interview. Is your brother Will still giving trike instructions?
Have there been any tests from ground crews on the noise levels of the aircraft in operation on the ground and in flight? Is noisy on the ground to say neighbors or others? Just curious. Nice video and well done, thank you very much
It is real nice handily; you flying very professionally
That's so cool. I want one.
Thank you for a great video featuring a great aircraft. What is the average flight time on a fully charged system? Thank you
Nicely Done! 🎉I want one 🎉
Nice job on the video/audio/editing. Good work!
My biggest dream is to own a Aerolite 103 one of these days thank you for sharing this with us👍
Mine to. It's just expensive.
@@caseykelso1 Casey, what does this model run for?
@@caseykelso1 It's really not any more expensive than the gas version if you factor in a couple hundred hours of gas and service. And LESS expensive overall after 500 hours or so.
Q, well its tons of them on sale on "Barnstormers "...Mite have travel to go get it, but, some are purty cheap....
@@beAdeodatus gas models I think like 28k fully assembled I think 🤔 ,2x as much as my next car purchase is gonna be 😒
In my opinion these electric setups are really exciting. Hope to own an electric version in the near future.
Agreed
Wow, next time I view a Rocket Launch in Titusville FL, I may as well stop by at the company in DeLand. THANK YOU, very inspiring ideas! What is the range and charging time of the 4-battery EV version?
What’s the glide ratio with the motor off?
Super job !! Good luck ! Cant wait to get my hands on one.
What does it cost ?
great video
Nice video of an interesting EV airplane
Amazing.
I am an 83 old retied Airline and Corporate 20,000 hr ATP. I am truly sorry that in all probability I will not be around long enough to fly one of these wonderful non-polluting, quiet aircraft. Somehow this is like the my long time experience in Sail on the water, from an 8 foot Pram, at 8 yrs. old, crewing on a 120 Schooner at 18. Then owning multiple sail, till my last at 80. I understand that a 4 engine commercial aircraft is in the works. Hope I'm on the Planet long enough to catch a ride !!
97VF750, thank you for your comments and interest in my channel. Congratulations on your incredible aviation career.
I hope you will get a chance to fly in an Aerolite EV-103 and just have FUN with the experience. Best Regards, Wayne Whitley
My buddy is a retired brain surgeon who flies an Aerolite. He’s 92.
I'm also a retired 79 yr.old airline pilot. I've been flying my Silent 2 Electro for 6 seasons . I also have a CriCri and an Aeroprakt 24 amphibian, but I've only flown the electric Silent since I got it. It's registered as a "Basic Ultralight" in Canada so I can do the negligible maintenance required with minimal paperwork. The Silent is 8 years old with original batteries which show very little loss of capacity. So far I've done over 550 hours in our short gliding season never needing a tow or running below 20% battery or not making it back to my airport.. Most flights are over 2 hours and several have been over 5 hours and 300km. Sadly the days are getting short and the gliding season here is almost over. I've been maintaining a commercial pilot medical but it's unnecessary for a Basic Ultralight. The Blackfly VTOL is another electric aircraft that interests me but they aren't available yet.
For the vast majority it is inconceivable to live decently let alone dream you are blessed by your achievements and the future ventures to come. God Bless you..
non-polluting ??? lol, they are HEAVILY polluting
I wonder if a toroidal prop would be a plus on this craft to reduce vibration.
Small comment from a recording engineer, on your introduction to your videos when you introduce yourself , the audio is out of phase "hollow sounding" if you mono the audio then the intro voice becomes inaudiable. most video editors should allow you to phase invert either side to fix the issue.
Hi! My name is ‘chica chica’ Wayne Whitley!
Great vlog. Thanks guys.
What's the weight cost/savings versus a similar gas model? What's the flight time and recharge time?
Wow, no answer after four days?? You'd think they would be all over this thread, but maybe they don't need the money...

They did not say what the average distance was, I know it depend on the power setting but just looking for the avg. for a battery charge?
Can you eject the battery if there is a battery fire ?
2:29
What is the climb rate ? 100f , 500'/min ?
Good vid 👍
I take a slight exception to those that say batteries are like pre-paying for fuel. Batteries are just a very expensive fuel tank. You still need to purchase and put fuel in that tank.
What a beautifully clean looking setup 😍 Cant wait for the next evolution of batteries to take flying to the next level.
Cheers
That analogy works if you add the fact that the type of fuel you'll be filling it with costs much less than gasoline per tank. Over the life of the aircraft you will end up saving quite a lot on fuel cost.
@@Metacognitor Yes, I understood that, that's why I said slight exception. It works for now but in 5 to 10 years when government is making less money from gas taxes, they will be coming back to raise electric prices to recoup that revenue. Hopefully buy than we will see a big drop in battery costs.
Cheers
@@patrickmckowen2999 Oh yeah, I get you, and agreed. Also hopefully home solar/wind install costs come down too.
@@patrickmckowen2999 Pat, in theory if things work in a most efficient manor , costs/ need of high taxes would become a thing of the past! Jim.
I have solar panels on my house, haven't paid an electric bill in 3 years. Get the facts right before you make assumptions
Very nice
Yes.
From what I can see, if you carry all 4 batteries, you can MAYBE get 40 miles range.
The regular 103 has a range of 80-100 miles.
An ultralight for traveling? I venture that most owners fly for fun, training, neat home. Speed alone is a deterrent as to going somewhere distant. BTW, this is a start as to battery powered planes. The RC industry has gone electric including jet engines. Thanks
@@Rhaman68 70 mph... Not slow to me.
@@saltythugproductions9686 Thought he said he cruises at 45. I would think at 75 the battery would empty fast. And just how long can you go on a battery charge? With a headwind? Where can you charge up the battery? How long to charge the battery? What's the cost of a battery? Have you had a fire yet? (I ask this because I'm hearing several fires in electric vehicles).
what is the process, price etc to get one, great job
Looking for something like this with folding wings to haul around and store.
What is the available flight time with the batteries? What is the cost for this model?
I have been into RC electric for years and it's amazing how it's progressed power is unbelievable I have some electric powered pylon racers exceed well over 150 mph. Once more companies making electric options for the ultralights we will see cost come down. Right now just not enough suppliers of these larger brushless motors cost is really high. $10k for an electric option little too much for what you get at this point. I think cost will come down as more of these motors will be made. I have found Hirth F-23 for $4650 with FI and electric start.
Wonder when they will take the EV motors out of cars ?
@@The762nato not worth. Completely wrong kV (that's how much rpms you get out of the motor per volt). It's actually shockingly easy to wind these motors yourself. No exotic materials needed. Just copper wire and some core material (even iron will do).
@@Argosh There will be lots of used EV car motors as the batteries are too expensive to replace in the car .
@@The762nato 1) no there won't. Battery exchange is standard and not as hard as you think. 2) even if they were abundant, they're still the wrong type of motor and will not turn at the right rpm.
will be affordable, when the motor can come from some other high volume production use, like a lightweight 3rd World country EV.

One disadvantage with all electric, no cross country... sun up to sundown, far 103 limited your fuel to 5 gallons, original intent back in the 80s was to keep you close to the pee patch thus avoiding potential hazardous weather as you ventured too far away, but that never stopped me from carrying TWC two-stroke oil some extra plugs and landing at airports that had gas, did it all the time when I flew in Ohio... No matter how dark and cloudy your skies may be it's always shining on top
What the hp/ kw?
What's it range or running time though? I mean is it only good for a few circuits or can you actually fly a decent distance with it ?
I agree, my 5 gallon fuel capacity never limited me to my range. I could easily fly several hundred miles across Ohio by carrying extra oil a couple of plugs and landing at airports that had gas, can't do that with electric can you
Have many minutes can I fly with electric power?
1 take off.....mild climb and a gentle cruise you can squeeze an hour out of a 4 battery pack setup......flying the pattern with touch and goes you would be lucky to get 30 minutes.
Thanks, I'll be waiting for the first float aerolight.
Question and I'm trying to a jerk , but do you have a way to jettison the battery if it catches fire ?
That was a thought in the back of my head. Maybe a fireproof cover to go over it? That way if it did go up it wouldnt incinerate the pilot. At least they'd be able to retrieve your remains out of the trees. Cant lie though i love the Aerolite 103 and id still fly this one.
@@AE-lk3uc Maybe a limited fire safe box that when it gets too hot it drops the battery , and in the event of an explosion deflects the battery effluence out in a safe direction . PS keep the control cables away from the potential fire.
What’s the cost?
I'd like to know TOTAL cost of the electric 103 AND how long it may fly 1/2 throttle on a charge. !
what I like about electric-powered flight is that its only one step away from a glider, I think a combined electric plane and glider is the way to go, electric engine to get altitude then cut the engine and glide, or power the engine right down to save battery life, the low weight of electric engines will mka this possible as battery technology advances, lighter longer-lasting batteries is what's needed,
What kind of battery? How many kWh/kg? Total kWh in battery and its weight. Duration at 60% power?

What's max altitude ?
17,999 ft in Class E airspace, if you are able to meet VFR flight rules for Class E airspace above 10,000 ft. (VFR minimums - 5 statute miles visibility, 1,000 above, 500 ft. below, and 2,000 ft horizontal of clouds) It is extremely cold at that altitude, and the oxygen is thin. I use an oximeter frequently to monitor my oxygen saturation, when I go higher than 9,000 ft.
