Two little mice fell in a bucket of cream. The first mouse quickly gave up and drowned. The second mouse, wouldn't quit. He struggled so hard that eventually he churned that cream into butter and crawled out. Gentlemen, as of this moment, I am that second mouse.

It's also important to note that the real life Frank Abagnale Jr. is *probably* not a reliable narrator of his life stories, as there is basically no corroboration on the vast majority of the events he claimed to have occurred. The FBI has many people that throughout the years basically flat out denied the events, and there are actual records in a lot of places that prove that Frank was not even at the places he claimed to be. The real life Frank Abagnale Jr. is likely only a small time con who actually turned big by conning the media and Hollywood by selling them pure fiction.

I work at Canadian navel base Esquimalt. A couple of year ago I attended a retirement seminar at a training bldg. named after a Canadian Admiral. During the Korean War he had been the navigating officer on board a Canadian destroyer, HMCS Cayuga. Just before they deployed another crew member joined the ship, a doctor. Because destroyers don’t normally get their own doctor, nobody questioned it.
He wasn’t a doctor, however, or even a Naval Officer, he was an imposter named Ferdinand Demara.
While onboard, he managed to improvise successful major surgeries and fend off infection with generous amounts of penicillin. His most notable surgical practices were performed on some sixteen Korean combat injuries who were loaded onto the Cayuga. All eyes turned to Demara, the only "surgeon" on board, as it became obvious that several of the injured soldiers would require major surgery or certainly die. After ordering personnel to transport these variously injured patients into the ship's operating room and prep them for surgery, Demara disappeared to his room with a textbook on general surgery and proceeded to speed-read the various surgeries he was now forced to perform, including major chest surgery. None of the soldiers died as a result of Demara's surgeries. Apparently, the removal of a bullet from a wounded man ended up in Canadian newspapers. One person reading the reports was the mother of the real Joseph Cyr; her son at the time of "his" service in Korea was actually practising medicine in Grand Falls, New Brunswick.
Tony Curtis, father of Jamie Lee Curtis, played him in the movie, The Great Imposter.

Most FBI agents know that people really DON'T look very closely at a badge. I think that's the point. You could literally make a badge that says your name is Mickey Mouse and most people would accept it.

Many themes in Spielberg’s films examine the relationship between father and son because of Spielberg’s difficult relationship with his own father. This film obviously hits on that between Frank Sr. and Jr., but also the growing and almost loving relationship between Frank and Carl. By the end of the movie you can see how much Carl really cares for Frank, almost like he’s his own son.

@@Sandstroem1981 Yep. He was a small time con who cashed some fake checks, not even close to the amount he claimed to have done, and got caught. There's very little evidence for any of the events in this movie or his biography, and plenty of contrary evidence and records proving that he wasn't at these places during the time he claimed to be. His biggest con is probably selling his fake stories to Hollywood and Steven Spielberg.

I was given Frank’s book to read before I watched the movie and I loved it. The movie takes some definite liberties with the story in the book, but since Frank spent his life creating deceptions I never really knew which different aspect was true (or whether any of them were truly what happened).
Still, the movie was good too, just different.

The key moment in the story was actually when he tried his first impersonation as a school teacher. That's when Frank Jr realized he had the power to psychologically CONTROL people and that he could pull off the mind game for much longer than he thought. It took the school a WEEK to catch onto the fact that a boy with no credentials had been teaching classes! There is a great sub-plot in the movie "Teachers" where a school needs a substitute teacher and accidentally dials the number of a MENTAL HOSPITAL where a patient roaming the halls answers the phone and agrees to take the job, shows up at the school and teaches American History more effectively than most "sane" people for a complete day before he is caught.
