- We've had a lot of you guys requesting more affordable project boat tours, and this one definitely qualifies. The Bayfield 36 is a great boat model for a couple to own, refit, and cruise aboard. It's a cutter-rigged, full-keeled, go-anywhere bluewater cruiser at a realistic price point, and it has a bath tub! We love the design, but our two biggest complaints are engine access and the location of the chart table. No boat is perfect though, so we still believe the positives outweigh the negatives and it's a great boat for the money.

This is the first boat you’ve shown that I’ve thought that could actually be reasonable.
I partially grew up on the great lakes and seen a number of Bayfields as a young man. I also spent the majority of my formative years in Bradenton / Cortez which made this episode more interesting to me! My family indeed lived aboard in our Florida years. I caught the school bus at the marina gate and weekends we anchored many times off of Egmont Key. What great memories...
Very realistic boat for someone who can live aboard and do their own work.
I like this boat and as long as the moisture in it is good then the price is close to right.

Whatever it is I cannot do, I always learn online. Of course, somethings are best left to the pros, but they are also hit n miss.
CZcams will teach you almost anything you want.
I have always had to do all of my own work out of necessity.
I always wanted the things others had and I happened to grow up poor so my solution was to repair and maintain everything myself.
I honestly believe most people can figure out how to do something and be successful.
With digital cameras and internet it makes it even easier to do.
Confidence and self motivation are the main things that help me repair most anything.
There are a few things that you do need a professional for.
Buy the boat and I will help you.

FYI Wellcraft boats used to be in Bradenton and fiberglass was used alot. Also for a very short period Donzi boats were here also. Both business's were by the airport for sarasota/bradenton. I have a cabinet that a friend/employee of wellcraft made me. :)peace

Nice episode nice boat. I think it is a realistic decision for having a blue water boat for size and money. Yes - you need to check the core, especially in the knees and around any (aftermarket) fittings on the deck. The yanmar (we have the same engine) is generally reliable. Of course, standing and running rigging must be replaced - dyneema is a good update. Nice touch that the safety line lets you get out at mid-ship - a cleat there would be highly beneficial when docking or undocking. The rudder chain and elements may also need to be changed as it is often neglected - a machine shop often charge you less for a rudder part than buying it from the factory. The bow-sprit is a real bonus and the rigging system is the same as on a new beneto or other mass-produced boat. If the hall is sound and the structure is solid, it is good to sail around. We have a very similar boat (Puma 38), 6 people can fit and we still make 400 nm family trips on her - although she turns 45 this year.:)
What are the knees?
@@bryanirwin5473 Hi, knees are the vertical bars the chain plates are attached to in case of inner chain plates. They are also sandwich construction, but prone to water damage as water can get through the deck around the chain plates.

I was looking at a Bayfield 40 that was absolutely amazing with it's old classic lines and rigging. Seeing a bath tub on a sailboat totally blew me away as far as a feature. I'd just be happy with a separate stall shower. Nice video and thank you for the tour.
That price is so amazing when you see the boat in all it's glory.. I'd definitely go this route!
Another great find. Good Value Canadian built as I remember. You could defiantly use as is while you prep it for what ever your intended use is. Much better to buy something that' runs a drives' than a back of the boatyard wreck for half the price.! Run it for 6 month before pouring a long of money into it. If you like it take it from there! I owned a Bayfield 36 on the Great Lakes for a number of years. It's a great boat. It's a full keel wit a cut away fore foot so she comes about nicely. Because it a cutter rig, she won't point very high but loves 60 degrees off the wind. In heavy wind she squats rather than a drastic lean. Yanmar diesel is adequate and will push the boat beyond hull speed. Best of luck!
i was touring that area,
with van, canoe, kayak, dog, fishing gear. that is a fantastic boat. i stopped in bayfield, wi. on lake superior where they are made and stopped to check the little town out, walked around with my dog, dodging the fudgies with their ice cream, t shirts and fudge. the boats are solid to say the least. beautiful lines, wine glass stern, full keel... maybe that is why a bath tub works? that boat is made for the large, steep, choppy waters of the great lakes where i grew up. as in the gordan lightfoot song? a big ship an be on several waves at once which can lead to the breaking up of these ships.
bayfields are my favorite, slightly ahead of cape dorys for blue water sailing. you don't want a center board over grown surfboard up there, like what they sail in florida. bayfields are also designed for colder weather. i am stuck in colorado... like skiing in wisconsin.

Beautiful sailboat. And as you-all stated, the perfect candidate for a refit on a Bluewater capable boat.
Low hours on the engine and the refrigeration working, not bad. Just need sails, rigging, brightwork and electronics, autopilot, wind-vain and misc.... GOOD TO GO.
Maybe $75 to $95K later of course..
But still, in total, $100 to $130k for a blue water boat is a good deal.
Except if it needs that much to upgrade, while it is still not bad price for good capable blue water cruiser, but there are couple of others on the market currently at ~60k price point. Both of which appear to be in well maintained condition and allegedly ready to cruise. Ofc who knows for sure w/out actually looking at them, but the point is there are boats out there that can be found in good condition at that range. The thing is though, depending on what all survey shows, one might be able to get around for lil while and slowly upgrade it back up to par as they get the funds. Instead of needing to spend a lot right away.
At last a sensibly priced boat ! Now, the average guy can imagine getting it without selling all of his properties ! Good show, guys !!

Lots of potential there with a proven make/model. At under $25K asking, she is definitely a Classic Plastic and would make a great boat for a single-hander or couple. Great pick for a tour!

What can make make a sailboat a cutter.
@@TheJulio2205 The actual definition or difference between a Sloop and Cutter, old school, like in "Chapman's Boating & Seamanship," is the position of the mast. On a sloop, it's ahead of amidship, and a cutter is more amidship to allow for two foresails. Today what we call a cutter is actually a modified sloop, as this boat is, set up with two foresails. The forward one is the jib, spinnaker, or genoa, depending on what your running and the wind, the rear one is called a staysail. A cutter is a very versatile rig if one knows how to sail them. A cutter ketch is also a very popular and a super blue water rig.

@@TheJulio2205 Cool, and what we mean by a modified sloop is that you have two types of a sloop. A masthead sloop has the forward stay running from the bowsprit, or the foredeck just aft the pulpit, all the way up to the masthead, the top of the mast, hence the name masthead sloop. Your jib is attached to this stay. A fractional sloop, on the other hand, has the stay attaching about one third the way down the mast and just above the spreaders. So it has a stay at a fractional distance up the mast. Again your jib attaches to this stay. Now with a modified sloop, it has both a masthead stay, and fractional stay, and able to carry two foresails, and now a cutter. Pretty cool stuff, right?
Mast head rig is driven ( powered ) by jib . Frac. Rig is driven ( powered) by main sail . Mast headed cutter is best of both worlds & gives u smaller sail area to work with so u dont have to fight large sail area in squel weather/ rough seas .

08:09 ,, I'd try a "Mr. Clean" magic eraser on the headliner first ... they have a mild abrasive and work very well.
It looks like it is textured though, magic erasers are awesome but don’t handle texture well

I'd build onto the ceiling after sealing the ceiling and add good LED lighting into it.
Also, reviewing boats in the 35-45 foot area (ideally around 40) is, from my purely selfish perspective, ideal, but for a lot of people who are intending to sail short handed or solo that's the sweet spot, as you know.
OK, now, this is more like the boats I would like to see. Affordable but still in reasonable shape. I heard nothing about electronics. Probably, it had none or were so out of date they were not worth mentioning. I'm still waiting for more what I want. 40ft +or-, cutter rigged ketch. Thanks for this.
Very solid boat. I remember touring one in Canada in the late 1990's, I was quite startled by the bath tub! That particular boat ended up falling over on the hard after a storm...
Built in Bayfield Ontario and was designed for passage making in the Great Lakes. Heavy boat, stable and was very popular when Bayfield was building.
Now that looked like it was worth the asking price. I don’t know how the hull and deck were as far as moisture and blisters but if they were good that boat is livable while going through section by section bringing it back to life. Perfect size with an awesome setup.
I just found this tour so of course it is already sold but that is the best boat for an affordable price without a loan you have shown that I have seen.
I should have been paying attention last year instead of preparing for surgery and trying to walk.
I know you guys see a lot of nicer boats and you probably plan to get a loan for your boat but hopefully you will show 3-4 of this quality and price range every year.
I love that boat, and a reasonable price. If I was in the us I'd very seriously look at that, just unfortunately not in a position to get a boat overseas and sail it half way round the world at the moment.
From personal experience, Bay field makes great cruising boats
Very sweet interior layout. One of the few aft cockpit designs under 40' you could have a real guest room for em to sleep in.
Well, I had a long review on the first video, but to make a long story short, hard for me to do, I know, but this is my favorite sailboat yet from all of your boat tours, and I've seen them all. With all of the others, there was always something to where it was nice, but I can't live with that. This is different, it's the perfect boat, a genuine diamond in the rough, and it's a freaking cutter with butterfly hatches! I'd swap for my Perkins 4-108, I have one with very low hours and add a boom vang, handy. Look at all of the winches and gear, a radar too, old but hey, if it works, better than not having one in the beginning, right. At 24K it's a steal. I got a free Out Island 41 after Andrew, had a broken mast, clean break above the spreaders, and I was able to sleeve for $15OO, but she had half sunk and was on her side when I got her, 4 months later you'd never had known, lived on her for 11 months and got $55k at sale. This one would be a walk in the park compared to that one. How long has it been on the market? I would like to call, but that would be some handy information if you catch my drift.
Edit: Forgot to add, it even has a windlass. A handy thing for an old man like me. Those damn anchor's get a little heavier every year. ;-)
The butterfly hatches are what do it for me too. I don't know what it is but I love them.
@@bryanirwin5473 They're classy for one, let in a lot of light, and give excellent ventilation. They're actually a cupola like on a barn or house.
Boarding ladders tend to be at the stern because most boats in most circumstances roll faster than they pitch.
Also, it's easier to shoot intruders when not broadsides in rougher water.

Great video, you guys do a nice job of showcasing these boats, I really like the Bayfield design of sailboats, this one is very nicely laid out, wouldn't take to much money to make it a world class cruiser, because we only sail the Florida coastlines and occasional trip to the Bahama's we decided to purchase a smaller boat after we sold our Privilege 615 catamaran, we ended buying a 2005 Dana 24, the used Dana's come at a hefty price, but so worth it, we paid $58,000 for this one but it was a turn key boat, we did a few upgrades on it to make it more live aboard friendly, we live aboard her 6 months out of the year and keep it in a slip at City Marina in Key West......
I honestly think about 10k spent on this boat would make it a lovely boat if you put the work in yourself
Couldn't see the price on Patreon so I can over here. Is that a misprint on the price? That's a really great price! Good suggestion on the survey. Even if you had to replace the rigging and sails you would still have less than new buy. The biggest advantage would be you can sail while you fix things up. The interior looked old but not damaged and for a couple or single this would be perfect for starting out. After all look what you've been able to do with Freebie! Thank you both for showing this.
This would be great for the two of you. The down sides can be mediated easily, if one was going to switch to electric and convert the spare berth to a chart room/ shop space.

5:37 in that berth, it looks like there's a door handle on the left. Perhaps that gives more access to the engine/prop-shaft.
I would sail this boat and make incremental improvements plus all of the standard maintenance as she goes.
I have no experience with sailboats but I'm intrigued by the possibility of getting a larger boat and sailing to Hawaii. I see all these boats for very cheap prices but I'm wondering if they really are bargains or if they are just money pits . Can you go into some of the possible disaster scenarios where a person could get stuck buying the wrong boat ?
Those Bayfields were built in Ontario, Canada. Most were sailed in the Great Lakes, and the guy that owned the boat yard where we kept our family sailboat, had a franchise to sell them. They are a nice boat, well built, but slow as molasses.
I really liked this boat, I mean a tub on a boat that size is remarkable. Sure it needs a little work, but what used boat doesn't. I loved the cutter rigging and the price is about right for a single person or couple to afford, though you are right, I'd definitely try to get a better price from them. The port and starboard settee look very comfortable. Beings that I'm a painter by trade, sanding and finishing the cabin would be awesome. If they would come closer to 20K, I could really see myself on this boat.
If I'm not mistaken these Bayfields are Ted Gozzard designs, very capable off shore boats. I like these classic designs from Bayfield, seriously looked at a 32' a while back
I think you guys should start putting some of the prices out there on these boats you know it would be nice to know without going through too much look up on it so you so if you’re interested you would look up more on it That way you won’t have to virtually waste your time if you have a rough idea that’s all I really ask in a rough idea what it’s worth instead of going through a whole new video and the people that owned it everything else you know it would be great

Not sure I'd need to start with as inexpensive a boat as this. That said, this boat would be perfect for a starter boat for me, as a solo sailor, and has room for guests. I'm pretty sure you'd need an engine and sails, the two biggies, at 20 grand total. I like the fact that it has two furlers. I haven't looked at the keel. Or much else.
It would be helpful if you would declare what the boat is made of Fibreglass, timber, aluminum, steel etc.

Only Yanks could manage to fit a COMPLETE bathroom AND a full size galley, AND a whopping saloon, AND two private cabins into a 36-footer and still leave space for a decent sized cockpit! I wouldn't be surprised if there was sauna hidden inside one of the lockers. European manufacturers still haven't caught up...

I don't know if there are any Pullman sleeper cars on display in FL. Their fame came partly from upper berths that folded down from the wall, to make a bunk bed where there had been just the lower bench during the day. They also used a clever sink that folded up against the wall when not in use. I have seen a Pullman style sink on a P32, but never Pullman berths, only the swing-down pipe berths on purpose-built racers. FWIW. You'll see Pullman berths in some classic movies.

Not bad. A tub in mono, while it sounds awesome, not sure how often that could be used cruising around. More for a multi ... or some really huge and wide mono. But yea for that price and if one puts in 20 - 25k, one could still save some money in the near term. As there are couple others currently going around ~$60k price, allegedly ready to cruise. I don't know, its a nice boat and Bayfields are great blue water boats, but it just did not grab me. Like it, but not sure I loved it. Definitely has some nice potential though, just always concerns me when they need obvious TLC, just how much else is neglected. There is a difference between old and well cared for vs needing TLC. Even if that well maintained boat needs something fixed, when its clear the owner took lot of pride in the boat.
Sure wish you added the asking price in the video. Be a great learning tool for us newbies.

This pair seem to concentrate on thr trivia of the boats. They don’t seen to talk too much about the boats underbody. Type of keel, rudder, seakindlyness etc. All more important than whether the wet head is accessible to guests!
IDK, I would be surprised if it was a twin keel or swing keel. Would be interesting to know if it has a skeg rudder.

"Quarter berth" not main berth- main saloon not seating area .
Keel stepped mast - no comperssion post . Geona track - not travler . Mast head cutter rig with what looks to b "Harkin " furling gear ( sty sail & jib ) . Back stay loose cus has a hyd back stay adjuster .

Ultraviolet ages varnish darker. Bayfield used great quality teak
and was a little dark new.
I generally like this boat. I think buyers should be aware of the draft on these boats. This boat would have great problems in Sarasota Bay or parts of the Bahamas.
I thought you were going to tell us the draught and maybe the keel configuration.
@@fredcreer1929 According to sailboatdata.com/sailboat/bayfield-3640 it's a long keel boat with a 5 foot draft. Although they list it as a ketch, not a sloop arrangement. (The page is for both the 36 and the 40. Could be that the 40 is Ketch rigged and the 36 is sloop rigged. I don't know.)

@@raymondtakamoto4799 Hell yeah dude! I have a 16 year-year-old brain damaged at birth from listeria meningitis daughter and shes is autistic too. I have her a special life vest-harness you can hook to a davit or stiff leg (one over the hatch for instance) with a safety strap that hooks to the inside of the cockpit. She loves to sail. We have friends at the marina; one's an 84.- year-old lady living on her 40-root Irwin that she and her husband retired on 18 years ago, he died on the boat a year and a half ago, and she says she is too. Her son lives in Dallas, so I keep an eye on her, and when he comes down, we take her out. He has a harnessed bosons chair she hangs in at the helm to sail her boat, she's too cute, because she can't set in the seat with the boat heeled. John, her son, gave me the idea for the harness and hoist, it's how she gets on and off the boat and down and up the hatch. It has a remote control. If you want to sail Raymond, you can do it. I'd guess it depends how much help you need and how much help you can find.
If you're willing to ask for help, then that's one way of meeting people - which is good.
I imagine something like getting a new propane bottle would be one of the most demanding tasks.
Launch a dingy. Get the empty bottle and yourself into the dingy. Drag it miles to a shop. Drag the full bottle miles back to the dingy. Get the bottle and yourself off the dingy and onto the boat. Recover the dingy.
It seems to me, what you need is someone to let you try some of the challenging tasks on their boat, and see if you're ok with them. (Raising a sail, changing an oil filter, ... )

A camper van would be; (There's almost no free places to park/stay in UK.)

£3,650 Site parking at £10 per night.
Easily £5,000 a year = £13.70 per night.
A narrowboat
£1,000 river canal licence (gives water and toilet cleaning facilities, and lots of free parking spots)
£1,000 Fuel (diesel, propane, coal, ...
£1,500 150 nights private mooring (for winter, electricity, laundry, ...)
£3,500 a year = £9.60 a night.
Hotel. £50 a night.
But of course, my little house doesn't move. If it's in a bad spot today, It'll still be in a bad spot tomorrow. Location is super important in house-buying. On the other hand, it's very unlikely (but not impossible) to sink, or break down and leave me stranded. And I can get stuff delivered here.

It has airconditioning. If you live in Flordia or the coast of Texas like me, you're used to it, and we use the A/C.

@@williamavery9185 LoL, I can imagine! I spent a deal of time down there myself. I lived in St. Johns Harbor in Antigua for five months. I've set several folks up with a 5000 BTU marine unit. Find them used or on a salvage boat for cheap, refurbish, and your good. On a 32 to 40 foot boat, they're more than enough on low if one insulates well and covers the hatches. On this setting, they pull about 2.5 amps/300 watts, not bad. I have a 37, and my unit keeps it cold. This summer, we hit 100 plus in Clear Lake, and I had no problem. With 300ah of batteries at 48v, I can keep her cool all day at anchor, and on a nice sunny day my solar is sometimes making up the difference, and I have a wind turbine too. Always have A nice breeze on the Gulf of Mexico. Happy Sailing, my friend!

Not familiar with the 36, but Bayfield 32s tend to be real slugs under sail.
With all due respect I have a Bayfield 32c and it is anything but a slug under sail. With the cut away full keel it tracks very well under most conditions. With full sails out it’s a well balanced boat with little weather helm. I can make >6 knots of boat speed in
