Well , i faced the same problem few days back .
Soft Reset worked for me .
Very simple steps are :
1)Press power key , when NOKIA screen appears , keep pressing "VOLUME DOWN " key .
you will get Exclamation mark( ! ) on the start screen .
2) Press Volume up -> Volume down -> Power key -> Volume down .
This will reset your lumia device .
Tried on Lumia 520 (8.1) , also works with windows 8 phone .

Thank You Zhan. It worked :) Latest Windows recovery tool is 2.1.1, Also if you are having problem in installing the recovery tool please UPDATE YOUR DLL FILES REQUIRED & VISUAL STUDIOS PACK (update dll if message prompts and if it says 0xc000007b error then do update or repair visual studios)

that sad moment when i got the glitchy screens... they were warnings... after i soft reset i could have backed up... but its too late for nokie now... rip... and be born again as noki3!

Hey man I cant recover because of a low battery and im worried it might die soon. I left my 925 that as a irremovable battery plugged in all night and still it said low battery. Its also keeps rebooting when plugged in

No need to install from pc 💻 just HARD RESET your phone it will take only 20minutes. And it was easy too try these if u got that problem sad Lumia face.... It will definitely on if u do a hard reset

what to do when this doesn't help? The result of my software package installation is saying, operation ended with failure. Any suggestion?
go to Device Manager, then expand "PORTABLE DEVICES" and your Lumia device should be listed. then Right click on your device then "Uninstall" . Then reinsert your phone to your pc. It should install the driver

I have exact the same problem but the program tells me that it fails to connect to server after downloading like 30% of 1.50 GB....help please cuz Ive tried to restart,reinstall it like 10 times without any success....
+Abdallah Majura please try to uninstall your phone's drivers on Device manager. after uninstalling, connect your phone and it will install drivers for your phone and try to run the recovery tool again
This doesn't help me on lumia 640 XL LTE, i tried hard reset with buttons as Pawan Kumar said, and it wan't help too...new problem, bigger problem i guess

i updated my phone but the white bar was full and was taking long to restart so i restarted my phone and now it only comes on and goes straight to the two gears and comes off can anyone help me
+Mark Anthony you interrupted the install update process. as you said you restarted it while on gears screen. you bricked your phone. please watch this video to fix your phone

and no install command
you have to download the firmware first before continuing to installation

+Biziz World this is flashing...meaning the whole OS of the phone will be replaced by newer version, so your files will be wiped-out if it's stored in your phone's internal memory, if it is on the SD card, make sure to remove that first before performing the flashing process
