    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Glinda the Good (Lena Horne) sings When You Believe" to Dorothy ("Diana Ross)
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
Sidney Lumet's The Wiz is the film version of the popular Broadway musical that retells the events of L. Frank Baum's classic novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz through the eyes of a young African-American kindergarten teacher who's "never been below 125th Street." Leaving a large family dinner to chase her dog into a snowstorm, Dorothy (Diana Ross) is swept up by a cyclone and transplanted to the land of Oz -- which looks suspiciously like a skewed version of the run-down Manhattan of the late '70s. Landing on top of the Wicked Witch of the East, the puzzled Dorothy is greeted by munchkins who peel themselves from a graffiti mural and sing to her about the Wiz (Richard Pryor), a powerful wizard living in Emerald City who can help her get home. On her journey down the yellow brick road, she encounters a garbage-stuffed scarecrow (Michael Jackson) in a junkyard, a broken-down tin man (Nipsey Russell) caught in the decay of an old amusement park, and a cowardly lion (Ted Ross) posing as a stone statue outside a museum. The quartet tangles with a subway station that comes to life, a poppy den, and a gaggle of motorcycle henchman on their way to the Wiz -- who orders them to kill the Wicked Witch of the West (a sweatshop tyrant) before he will grant them their wishes. The Wiz has about double the large-scale production numbers of The Wizard of Oz (1939), with songs written and composed by Charlie Smalls.

HISTORY FACT: When Lena Horne began to come on the scene, those who were helping her career insisted that she claim to be Spanish so that way people would book her more and invest in her. But she insisted that she not do that and that she promote herself the way she is-a black woman. THANK YOU MS.HORNE

The discussion here got toxic rather quickly. The concept of European Spanish goes over the heads of many Americans. And so for that matter does mixing. In fact, knowing nothing about Lena Horne's family, only her as mainstream singer and actress, her presence in this film threw me off at first, but not for more than an instance. I for one don't give a damn what she is, nor anyone else. Just do your job and fill the roll, and they all did that tremendously in this film.

My dad was a Lena Horne Fan. I remember being forced to watch this movie at least 20 times. My dad always fell asleep during the first ten minutes of this film. My job was to wake him just before Lena came on screen. This song still gives me chills because I remember my dad mesmerized watching Lena sing it in this scene.

I mean absolutely no disrespect to Deborah but it’s a little bit disappointing. Lena Horne’s version is just amazing. I haven’t heard another artist doing it like she does.

      It's not adorable.
When singers are bad actresses, but they sing well, it's okay. In this film, unfortunately, they don't play well and sing well. The film did not become a failure thanks to the efforts of Quincy, Michael, some male singers and (most importantly) ballet dancers. You don't have to watch or listen to everything else.

This movie lost a bundle of money....millions in fact. The movie cost so much to make that it was unable to recoup its cost...plus audiences stayed away in droves because of negative word of mouth....the movie was Diana Ross's final theatrical movie release. But the movie does have its legends of fans...but not enough fans to make the movie a hit.

I wish more people knew the story of this AMAZING woman. Her mother wanted a career in show business and was, sadly, always jealous of Ms. Horne's success. During WWII, this stunningly beautiful lady was the pin-up for black service members, hence Fred Sanford's ongoing admiration of her in the show Sanford and Son. Ms. Horne was also one of the first big stars to appear on "Sesame Street," making it 'cool' for others to follow in her footsteps; this is the reason she was an early guest on "The Muppet Show," encouraging other great guest stars to follow. I remember seeing The Wiz in the theater in its first release. Honestly, the overall quality of the film is a bit uneven BUT when Ms. Horne finished this song, everyone in the room gave her performance a standing ovation. Fantastic moment. I wish more of today's so-called 'divas' had half her brains, beauty, style, and class.

When Lena sang this song EVERYONE in the entire theater rose to their feet and gave a thunderous ovation 🎉! Trust me when I tell you that each and EVERY one of us was a believer and we learned what a truly great singer was! Rest In Glory, Sister Lena! May you teach the Angels a

Don't cry for this beautiful and talented woman. After this performance became the talk of the film, she embarked on a HUGE one-woman show that sold out across the nation and coincided with a Quincy Jones Album release. I saw the show, and she was amazing and commanded top dollar at the most exclusive theaters in the country. Broadway sized houses that captured the intimacy of her life, with Broadway priced tickets. She went out with a bang and was quite wealthy in her final years (Vogue also named her one of the ten most beautiful women in her 60s)! What an amazing groundbreaking life and she and other black screen beauties like Dorthy Dandridge paved the way for many others, including Diana. Diana has acknowledged Lena Horne numerous times as her idol.
