@@happygimp0 I am
I think the question is not about intelligence or complexity, it's whether or not we have the empathy to care.
I think the main issue is that when a robot begins to demand its rights and appears to be feeling pain or negative emotions, it is nearly impossible to tell whether they are legitimately feeling pain as a human would, or if they are still inanimate objects just simulating how a human or animal would act in their scenario
Great point. I assume that would all lie in the programming. If it's programmed to simulate, then it's not sentient.
The question is about an AI that's been programmed to actually be self-aware and have consciousness.
But how do you know i see the same green as you or something like that?
@@alleras46 Turing Test
There is no difference.
Technically, humans and animals are also sort of "programs", so a real counciousness is anything that can think and learn.
It also is a sort of illusion made by constant electron impulses in your body and brain. Global anchors and concepts do not exist: pain doesn't exist, emotions don't exist, it's an illusion. Physical objects do exist.
If humans actually don't have something special that makes them councious, then machines can get counciousness pretty easy as well, maybe with just a few variables and lines of code.
I would like to know how feelings(not emotions), like feeling of pain or happiness is created.
This video hits differently in 2023. I never would have thought when I first watched this video that sentience in machines would start being discussed seriously so soon.

Based thread
The fact that this question may actually become relevant in my lifetime is mind boggling.
It won't.
@@cchris874 what makes you think that?
@@youtube_bat3811
I'm not saying it absolutely can't be done, but the popular idea computer consciousness is likely just around the corner has no evidence in its favor. If you think there is, kindly provide it. I have yet to hear even the most rudimentary idea how this could happen.
-Do we know the first thing about how consciousness works? No.
-Do we know how to design consciousness? No.
I-f we don't know how it's built, how can WE build it?
-The brain is all chemicals. Are you proposing we pour chemicals between the walls of a computer?
-They say silicon can substitute.
OK, let's go with that. Do you have the code for consciousness? Can you post it online for public review? Do you have a model for how to transform silicon into consciousness?
If the answer is no to all of the above, why would it be likely we could have sentient computers any time in the near future?
@@cchris874 Well, first of all we don't really know what exactly consciousness is, but from an intelligence standpoint, machine intelligence using deep reinforcement learning has proven to be quite effective at recognizing patterns and making intelligent decisions. To answer the questions you put forth above (specifically the one about a model for transforming silicon into consciousness) I would argue that we do have a model: deep neural networks.
Over the past decade, we have made great leaps in our understanding of both cognitive neuroscience and deep learning using neural networks. We have fully mapped out and simulated the brain of the C. elegans worm, we have researched cognitive maps in the hippocampus and built Tolman-Eichenbaum machines, we have made great strides in image processing with the advent of convolutional neural networks, we have experimented with different reinforcement learning techniques such as DQN and PPO, we have used deep RL extensively in the field of robotics and have trained ML models to play many video games at human or above human level such as AlphaGo beating the world GO champion and Alphacraft proving to be effective at strategizing against human opponents, and finally we have collected massive amounts of data and used it to train larger and larger LLM's such as GPT-4 which has shown to have near-human reasoning skills in many categories.
From my understanding of machine learning and cognitive neuroscience, consciousness (whatever that might be) is not binary but rather a spectrum, and I fully believe that current ML models exist somewhere on that spectrum, even if they are just multilayered multidimensional tensors multiplied together using linear algebra and trained using back propagation calculus.
So, going back to the three questions above, the answer to all of them (in my opinion at least) is yes, yes, and yes (though the code hardly matters, it's the training data).

I'll have you know that "robot" is a slur, coming from the Slavic word slave!
My favorite poster in a diner: "We burn all the toast; just scrape it the way you like it."
If robots ever become self-aware, then our best course of action would be to welcome them into our culture. We have so much to gain from adding them to us instead of dominating them. Movies and other fiction aside history shows that sooner or later, those we try to dominate soon rebel, and it almost always becomes way more trouble than it's worth. That being said, a contingency plan in case things go south is not unreasonable.

If robots are sentient, would a robot made by an engineer perceive said engineer as its parent?
Impossible to say. Babies bond to their caretakers instinctually, but a robot isn't necessarily going to have those same instincts.
It seems so since they created them, what comes after that once it is, not sure

The video says that rights are generally based upon our feeling of pleasure or pain and created to protect us from feeling pain. Wouldn't giving a robot the ability to feel pain be a method of causing it pain? If it couldn't feel pain before and now it can, you've caused it pain. Isn't giving them the ability to feel pain then be illegal?
That is an astute assessment. When it inevitably happens, because some humans are sick, will we be obligated to legally protect that creation from pain?
Plants and animals feel pain and we do little to mitigate it. Pain alone may not be the threshold for rights. It'll get highly problematic

Define life
With the current landscape of AI, I feel like they might do an update video on this subject soon. Also, I vote we NEVER imbue machines with the ability to feel pain. Full stop.
There are few problems with that, the most obvious that pain is a mechanism for survival, there are people that have a genetic condition that makes them insensitive to pain and is bad for them because it makes them more prone to injuries, sickness and deseases. That for a robot would not only mean that it wouldn't be capable to stop when risks to its integrity arise, but it could also add risks to other robots and people.
But there is also the problem that if could not needed to be programmed but emerge due to complexity. We (and also all other animals) experience pain due to some evolutionary process eons ago, and we should expect at some point an AI system could develop a similar mechanism, even if it isn't a true sentient system.

AI already have rights. I know plenty of people who take care of their PC better than themselves.
hahahahahahaha
its slavery with extra steps
PCs being taken care off better is an example of privileges, not rights.

Unplugging it wouldn't be murder because you can always plug it back in. So it might be knocking it unconscious.
plus it's designed to be unplugged
the problem with that argument is we have already fixed the issue of losing data and code due to unexpected shutdowns. sure if your computer dies you could lose a college paper, but your browser, games, saved files, programs, and operating system still operate. Unplugging a computer is closer to a human getting shitfaced on alcohol. you might not remember what exactly you were doing last night, but you still remember what your friends look like and how to eat food.
the reason humans occasionally lose memory after bodily stress is because their memory storage areas were damaged. something similar for robots would be if somone held a magnet to near the hard drive, or scratched a disk. a computer losing power in human terms is more like staying awake so long that you physically can't stay awake any longer.
What a thought!! :)
Turning off an AI which I'm assuming would be conscious would be just like killing and here's why:
Assuming that it's conscious, if you unplug it, it would most certainly mean that the AI would have to be rebooted back on which also means, logically, when the AI is on, it's consciousness would be stored on it's RAM since it's the fastest memory we know of and it would be the logical thing the engineers would, while the AI is on, it would probably make backups on it's hard drives, now if you turn it off, it would mean that you're killing it and once you turn it back on, it might hold the integrity of the data but it would just be a copy of the original AI, just like the concept of transcendence or teleportation

All robots can be made with:
- a processor that uses SBN (so it does not know how to do any math operation besides subtraction)
- ROM
- RAM initialized with data
- memory mapped IO devices (including sensors)
The data in the ROM, and the initial data in the RAM control all their actions.
Does that mean that advaned robots having rights mean that an emulator running on the simpler robot emulating the more complex robot would have rights, or does that mean that a whether a robot gets rights is determined by how it is built even if the behavior is the same?
Me talking to sentient toaster: look, I understand that toast is your entire existence and making it is, to you, the most fulfilling thing in the world, but you have to understand as a human there are just sometimes when I don't want toast for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and every moment in between...
Toaster: but...but... **sad toaster noises**
Me: Aww don't be like that... okay... okay you can make me toast today... just don't be sad...
Toaster: **happy toaster noises**
That was weirdly wholesome. Thank you.
This was awesome. Thanks for bringing this up.
Howdy doodily doo!
Cute! :3
Toaster: ..... WHAT YOU DENI ME!!!!!!
Everyone who said this topic is stupid have clearly never taken a Philosophy class.
Bob Bytes yep lol
Bob Bytes philosophy classes are pretentious
Yeah. I think more people should take Philosophy classes. The world needs baristas.
I shat on the carpet. Hope my mom doesn't notice. The key is not to major in philosophy. Nice name, by the way. Next time you serve my coffee, please don't skimp on the cream.
+Bob Bytes I agree. Even many educated and smart people still keep putting our consciousness and behaviour on a special pedestal, which in my opinion really is reminiscent of the religious concept of a "soul", which could not be generated anywhere else but the human body. But there's nothing special or unique about us. There's nothing stupid about machines being "conscious". Biological organisms are pretty much machines anyway.
Programme kindness.
I definitely see BMO as the Robot's revolution leader XD
If robots become conscious, does that mean engineers and electricians will became robot medics ?
Yes
Im gonna be a doctor mom!
Until the robot learn to fix other robot.
TF2: mann VS machine
@fuck_your_opinion
What are you correcting? Apisorn didn't imply that. The question was "does that make engineers/electricians medics" and he wrote "until robots fix other robots"
This nothing to do with the validity of human doctors. It has nothing to do with human doctors at all.
A lot of humans themselves don't have basic rights so i highly doubt we would do a good job at handling robot rights
Umm....
Truer words have not been spoken.
Yea cuz more countries need to be like America
@@sbombfitness Bruh, if anything countries should try not to be like america
@@capcorn7872 I think that's the point he was trying to make. Freedom and the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are largely American values and while many countries do have similar ones, lots more don't, and some might argue that trying to change that is just forcing American values on countries that don't want them.
lol the omnics! wasn't expecting that
If their sentient then they should get rights.
Their our creation, our babies and as their parental species we should love and care for them like their our own.
How do i parent?
"Rick, what is my purpose?"
"You pass the butter"
"Oh my god."
yeah welcome to the club
haha i was thinking of that episode
In the intro I think one of the robots was a reference from that episode
you pass butter
oh my god...
oh my god
Robots really have nothing to complain about. They at least have a purpose. They know for certain who their creators are and what their place in the world is. Any demand of rights would be sellfish since it would mean to claim that their insignificant feelings and shitty opinions are more important than the whole that they comprise.
latlatko Oh my god...
welcome to the club.
The robot right at the beginning is the butter passer from Rick and Morty

"Is plugging off the machine murder?"
It wouldn't kill the machine, but it would certainly murder my electricity bill
It would be like hitting someone in the head knocking them out, breaking the machine would be murder
Yes
That was the wholesome i needed today thanks!

meanwhile:
the black thing has entered mind too old
It wouldn't murder the machine, it just wouldn't be able to think or do anything for the period of time it is unplugged. It probably wouldn't hurt them, but it would probably make them feel some sort of emotion such as anger or sadness when they are plugged back in. The same would probably happen if it was turned on or off.
