I've been messing around with this for a long time today, nowhere did it mention the little CLICK That was the magic word, Thank You!
Thanks for watching, Andria!
Just bought my first rental that I’ll be living in. Was going to hire a locksmith but you just saved me some time and money. Great video!
Thank you for watching, Ryan! That's exactly how I wound up using these locks, I had a rental. This is a great application for that.
Thanks so much for sharing this excellent how to video with us! We were able to re-key our new deadbolt and door knob lock with our current keys without a problem after viewing this! Thanks again!
That's great...I'm glad this helped! Thanks for watching!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! - Your video is the only one that shows how to change the key without it being on the door for new locks to be installed.
I'm glad this helped! Thanks for watching!
Thank you. You know how to explain better than the instructions. I love the videos

so what prevents a criminal from re-keying this ? (adding on after original comment)- OHHHH the original key is needed to start the process.. whew. thank goodness I just installed one and was about to remove it ! lol ... ok ok thank you, Dennis.
Thanks for watching, Crystal! Glad you got that worked out. :)
Great vid! Definitely going to buy Kwikset with Smartkey!

Makes sense to do the rekey process before mounting the hardware
Thank you for watching! I agree, it's much easier to do on the bench than kneeling down in front of the door. :)

Thank you!! I appreciate you watching!

Thank you for watching, Danny!
Great video! So, if I replace my 3 doors main locks and dead bolts w/the Kwik Set Smart locks and rekey each lock with my originally key it'll all work with my original keys? Pls keep me straight here, awesome!
Thanks for watching, Norman! Yes...that's what I did...I replaced a couple of locksets and set them to take my main original key. Worked like a champ.
Very helpful video. Does it mean everytime I change key, I need to buy a new pin? Thank you
Thanks for watching! No, you can use that same pin anytime you change the key.
Great video! Kwik question: The Kwikset video says to turn "your" old key counterclockwise 180 degrees and then turn it back to rekey it. In your video you turn it back 90 degrees. Which is it?
Hi Mike, thanks for watching! I'm not sure about Kwikset's video, perhaps they've changed newer locks and updated their video? On mine, 90 degrees does it.
Thank you so much for this video. My landlord literally left it up to me to change my door locks on my own. What if I don’t want to rekey the lock, I want to use the keys it comes with going forward. Do I still have to do the process soon in the video ? Also my apartment is on the older side so I’m guessing the door is older too. I’ve seen a few people say this lock doesn’t work on older doors, is that true ??
Thank you for watching! Great question.....no, you will not have to go thru the re-keying process. These locks will work with the included keys out of the box. You shouldn't have a problem with using these locks in any door unless they are really old, like over 50 years old. Most doors in the US have had standard bores in them for a long time. If the current knobs look like modern doorknobs, you should be fine. Here's a doorknob replacement video that may help: czcams.com/video/xDA83XXIDAU/video.html
Dennis Coffey thank you so much
That's awesome. How do you line up those stupid screws though?
Thank you for watching, Mary! You know, I agree with you, those screws to get both flanges attached are stupid! I fuss everytime I have to mess with them. So I don't have a great way to do this, but here's what I do: I sit down on the side of the door where the screws go in (typically the inside), put a screw in the hole closest to the edge of the door and push it all the way in. Then I line up the tip of the screw with the threaded hole it goes into and get it started by one or two threads. Put the flange up against the door, line it up as closely as I can, then hold it with one hand while I try to thread the 2nd screw with the other, eyeballing it the best I can.
How do I get more than one key to work on the lock at a time? Everytime you do this method only the new key you switch it to will work?
Thank you for watching! Yes, this lock is like any other in that regard, it will only work with one key pattern at a time. You have to get multiple copies of the key you set it to.
my question is do you have to use it with an old kwikset ket or can use use any brand key such as a defiant?
Thanks for watching! Any standard key will work...doesn't seem to matter what brand it is.
cant someone rekey the front door if they have that and break in?? idk
Great question! They'd have to have a copy of the current key to re-key the lock. Thanks for watching!
this is only for a rekey? so it’s okay to use the keys it came with?
Yes, you can use the keys that came with it, and shouldn't have to set those up. Thanks for watching!
Would I be able to set up one key to control 4 kwikset deadbolt locks?
Thanks for watching! Yes, you can set multiple locksets to the same key using these locksets.
Dennis Coffey Thank you. Perfect for my new rental.
What do you do if you did it wrong and now I can't get they original key to work to unlock the door lock? The key won't turn 90 degrees and I don't know that the smart key fits. I never hear the click.
Thank you for watching! Does either of your keys fit the lock, or do you have a key stuck in the lock now? If so, let me know the current situation and I can probably help you. If you now do not have a key that will operate the lock then the cylinder needs to be reset. Kwikset will do it if you send it to them. Some locksmiths will have a resetting tool for the Smartkey cylinders, or you can buy one for about $20. It is called a Smartkey resetting tool. It will come with instructions, if you follow them closely, you can reset the cylinder and get the lock keyed as you'd like it.
@@dwcoffey thanks for the reply! I can use the key that came with the set in my deadbolt just fine. The key still fits the door knob, it just won't turn 90 degrees like it did before I messed something up. It won't unlock the bottom knob lock. It doesnt freely move left to right when I try to use it to unlock the door. Hopefully that makes sense.
Yes, it sounds like the lock needs to be reset. It will accept any key that is made on the correct blank, just won't turn either way.
@@dwcoffey how do I reset it? Take the door knob off? Is something inside tripped?
I'm getting no little click. This cant be difficult but I'm failing.
It's very faint. Might be easier to feel it depress rather than hear it or get a click. The tool is depressing a very small button down in the lock. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching, Jeff.
Set-up Set-up Set-up
Thank you for watching Misty! I'm not sure I understand your comment...did I misspell set-up?
so can anyone re key my lock if they have that cheapy tool ??
No, they'd have to have your key and the tool. Thanks for watching.
Did not need to rekey!!! It does not say rekey in description!!😢
Thank you for watching, Susan! Yes, you can re-key this lock or use the keys that come with it.
I believe the Thieves in my neighborhood know about this because they are still getting into my house and even into rooms I put new locks on 5/15/2022 so I would love to know how to stop this because it is costing me a fortune and they steal my locks and return them to the stores and I even put home camera around the house and they have stopped them from recording them.
I am in desperate need of answers
Thank You
Rebecca Van Dyke
I'm sorry that is happening to you Rebecca. It sounds like they have access to your home, maybe a different entrance? I would definitely get the police involved.
I thought you had to turn the new key 180 degrees to the left then turn it back to the right and see if it works. Hmmmmmm
Thanks for watching, Sergio!
These locks go defective after a year or two. The keyway does not retract automatically and then any key can get in. I have installed about 20 and all of them have this problem after time. You need to reset the keyway to the 12 o'clock position yourself. They are not worth the money in the end.
Thanks for watching! Thankfully, I haven't had that problem with mine after a few years.
Had to return this door knob, just couldnt get it to work and the instructions were terrible, didnt even show how to put the two long bolts in. I must have switched out and installed 100s of doorknobs. Really stupid design.
Thanks for watching, Brian!
Thank u
Thanks for watching, Jose!
