Which one would you Buy?
If buying new the honda. But realistically, a used mt07 is a much better bargain. I got my mt07 for less than 5k usd. 2019 model still with warranty.
Honda. Not my kind of bike. But it would be a honda if i had to choose.
The Yamaha looks better but the Honda sounds better in my opinion. Does anyone agree with that? I would get the Honda based on this review and it would suit me better. What a bargain with all that tech!
I've ordered the Hornet. Can't wait!
Too busy pulling wheelies on the old MT-07 to even consider.
The Hornet is one of the most exciting bikes for the money I have ridden in a long time. The engine is superb and its chassis is lively. Just a shame it doesn't look quite as good as it rides
They should have put a 180 section rear on it… it would have done wonders for the looks IMO. It’s one of the reasons the GSX8S and MT look soo good.
@@jackiechan5626 I thought that but the smaller tire certainly make it a whole lot more nimble. It’s a bike that handles better than it has any real right to
Eh wdym it doesnt looks good
@@rayhan4502 Honda has never nailed the streetfighter look comparing to Yamaha or Ducati.
The bike doesn't look bad, but it's not that good either. I'd prefer the CB750 to follow the Neo Sport Cafe and have the look of the CB650R instead. With that we'll have a bike that looks good, is fun to ride and doesn't weight as much as an adv bike.
They certainly have made some awesome looking CB650/1000\300R naked bikes, this little molded headlight design has to die
Exactly the results I was expecting. After almost 10 years there is a new king...congrats to the hornet.... You have to keep in mind that you are comparing a newly designed bike to a decade old one. Yamaha is finally forced to improve the mt07.
The MT07 got dethroned by the excellent Triumph Trident 660.
You can get the honda with michlen road5
@@fyorbane i test rode the trident at lauch, the throtle response felt terrible compared to the mt07 or cb650r (the closest rivals at the time) love the design tho.
@@danielcosta1987 same. Also the front suspension setup feels a bit too hard for me being a lighter person, and the engine is considerably hotter which makes riding in traffic more uncomfy than it already is. At least the seat is quite nice
@@fyorbane yeah but triumph reliability is LOL
I sold my Yamaha MT-07 and bought a Honda CB750 Hornet and I finally realized what a Yamaha would feel like if it actually had quality parts from the forks to the brakes to the engine to the torque.
Have you watched the video?
The MT is showing it's age and dated low end technology ... the bike has barely changed in a decade or so other than re-styling and very minor tweaks. Time for a major update or maybe even totally new model. Honda have smashed it with the Hornet .. it's going to steal a LOT of sales from the Yamaha ...
@@MotoGoato True. But I think Yamaha is taking so long because it will be big update to the CP2 engine, which is mounted in multiple bikes . My guess is that it will get a ride by wire system. That will allow them to give all the features that it's currently lacking, especially in the T7 and Tracer 7.
At the moment they have reached a limit with the tech on these bikes and I think costumers won't be happy if they go for another round of useless updates like we got until now.
It was meant to be an expensive, not bad ass. It’s pretty good for the value.
Yeah honda is known to have quality feeling its like comparing mazda to honda and toyota cars
I've had an MT-07 (2020) for 3 years now, and I cannot fault it. It's great fun to ride, reliable, quick, nimble, and looks fantastic. I rode a Hornet over the weekend, and tomorrow I'll put a deposit down on one. It had everything the Yam had (apart from the looks), and then some. The clutch and gearchanges were incredibly smooth, it was quicker, the optional quickshifter is fantastic, the bluetooth integration for satnav etc is great, and somehow there's even less wind buffeting at higher speeds.
I've not been riding long, and I've only ever owned Yamaha bikes. I'll be genuinely sad to see the back of my beloved MT-07, but the Hornet impressed so much on that one test ride that I'm not sure how Yamaha will sell many more MT-07's this year.
YZ/MT series have never been known as "nimble." They're know for poor handling.
How tall are you? I’m trying to decide on these 2 bikes but he said the mt is better for taller riders, and I’m 6’2 so can’t decide which would be better bc it seems like the hornet is the superior bike
@@jeremywebber6353 I'm 6'1 and porky. I couldn't feel a lot of difference between the bikes, but I did only spend an hour or 2 with the Hornet. The MT is pretty uncomfortable after 90+ minutes but that's more to do with the crap seat.
Otherwise, if you can run the extra cash to a Tracer, they feel much roomier.
I would have bought a used MT-09 or XSR900 over any of these bikes. Yes I'm talking used bike, but probably around the same price as a new Hornet/mt-07. I own XSR900 -22 and MT-07 -20 and once you ride the 900cc tripple, the paralell twin feels like quiet, slow tractor. The only thing the MT-07 is good at is the price I think. Its a great commuter bike, if you are a short person.
An XSR900/MT-09 probably feels like a Fiat Uno compared to a super sportbike.....but the price (both purchase and insurance) will double or tripple. :)
@@whiskeythrottle333 Aye, I get that - and to be honest you can pick up a 5 year old MT-09 for a very similar price. Not on a PCP deal though, and I like my little twins! Just goes to show, one bike just isn't enough 🙂
Such a well-made video. Presented by one of the best motorcycle journalists. Looks like Honda are going to sell loads, especially if they can maintain the very competitive price.
Hope you can in the future, do a 4 way test to include the Triumph Trident and the new Suzuki
Also would be interesting to compare it to the older 790 duke, as I've riden that bike and they plan to relaunch it in the Asian markets.
yea id buy this over the Mt-07 if theyd freakin bring it to the states
Can’t wait for a 3-way between these and the GSX 8S, and maybe even a 4-way including the lovely Trident.
Interesting choice of words but hey.
Fk it, make it a 5-way with the CB650R
The hornet is a much better bike than the trident.
@@DavidSmith-hn5gg the trident wins the beauty contest in the segment though, IMO.
3-way….😂
I love the Monty Python style desk on the runway...
And now for something completely different
I think you was being kind to the MT07 in the handling department. Having owned a MT07 its suspension is way to soft. The Hornet is much better mid corner. However, my Hornet come with Road 5 tyres
Thanks for taking the time to comment!
The MT07 is still ideal for a shorter and reasonably light person starting to ride (35 kw version) - then the (low) ride height, suspension (soft), weight (low with 184 kgs wet) and handling (easy, also at low speeds) tend to shine.
Alternative (if the budget should be available): The MT09 in the 35 kw version (189 kgs wet) 😉
@@SirMountainpass Yes it is. I love the MT07. I covered around 34000 miles on mine without a single hitch. Fun and very reliable. It’s a bike you can do just about anything on. Anyone who has or is considering buying a MT07 will have a great bike.
The damping in the stock forks on the mt is a joke. I put thicker oil in mine the day after I bought it.
@@jonahblaymires3482 I agree, I thought I was going to crash the first time I entered a roundabout at high speed (pogostick effect). I also put thicker oil and cut the spacers 10mm. Next time im using even thicker oil in the forks.
I find Michaels reviews always to the point , impartial and coming from a place of experience and importantly no “dude” or “bro” thrown into the commentary .
Another brilliant overview. Showing that photo of the RD was terrific. Thanks!
Great comparison review; very well considered and fun to watch. I test rode the Hornet last week and fell in love with it almost immediately. Loads of torque, really agile, lightweight, sounds awesome (even with stock exhaust), really easy to ride. I originally had my heart set on the Neo Café CB650R, but as soon as I sat on the Hornet it just felt right. An hour later I placed my order.
Also, I think it looks great too! Not classic like the CB650R naked perhaps, but sharp and purposeful. Much better in the flesh than on images or fillm imo
This is the video I have been waiting for. Kudos for tackling it ahead of everybody else.
Fun comparison! Let's hope the Hornet (and maybe the GSX8S) will finally give Yamaha the push they need to thoroughly upgrade the mt-07. I mean the last facelift... A weird looking headlight and funky colours won't make up for poor suspension, axial brakes and a right side up front fork. Also 70 bhp suddenly seems like a bit of a dud compared to the Hornet, GSX8S and also the Tuono 660 which has a comparable engine setup!
The mt07 looks better than the Honda and the headlight is not weird! 😋
Imagin the Hornet with the CB650R headlight. Between these two, I'd buy the Honda.
+ 650's swingarms as well. Those simple swingarms on the Hornet surely don't look very good
Really liked this comparison review. Fun, light hearted and still entertaining and informative. More please!
Love the format - more please!!
I remember everyone giving the Hornet so much grief when it was unveiled. Nice to see some vindication for it.
The GSX8S is gonna be a game changer. I have owned many suzukis. All have been dead reliable, to a fault. Such a well built brand. I really hope they come out with a fully faired 8R version. I will be pre-ordering mine soon. Great to see some middle weight Japanese competition 👏
Suzuki is out of the game unfortunately
Only thing is it weighs as much as a 1000c bike for no reason 😂
Great video with lots of imperial detail which is much appreciated. Well done!
Great format for this type of video. Really enjoyed the 0-100 drag race. Please do more of this! Surprised to hear the Hornet won you over in the end. Still not sold on the looks though and it does look very much its price in parts.
Very cool, detailed description of both of these bikes. It was very enjoyable. Greetings from the NJ shore.
The best part about the Hornet and the new Gixxus is that Yamaha is basically forced finally to update the MT. The ultimate winner here is us, the riders.
Now this was a damn good well done review👏
I love this video and this type of comparison, more videos like this! Thank you!
Amazing video and the production quality is great.
This is a shockingly good review & video. Good job guys!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for this interesting review, and it makes sense indeed... looking fwd to test ride the new Hornet sometime when it arrives here in South Africa!
Actually didn't see that coming. You can't argue with a Honda. I had a 2002 CBR f4I and it was a beauty of a machine which I'm sure the Hornet is now too. Thx for the review, Excellent as always.
Great comparison video, really like this format!
We love the desk. Keep it in your comparison tests in the future.
I like the looks of this MT07 more, but I'd prefer the performance of the Honda... I'm a 5'7" woman, so it'd probably fit me really well. And as for the tires, if the MT07 has better tires, then I guess I'd be switching to those on the second set for the Honda (or another comparable pair that plays well with the Hornet). I wonder if I could also take the rear-view-mirror stalks from the MT07 as well, then repaint parts of the Hornet... I'd love to see the lights from the Aprilia RS660 on the Hornet with the adaptive lighting for corners.
One of the best review videos recently - kudos for your efforts Neevsy.
Glad you liked it!
Hey man I used to watch your videos way way back in the day, probably one of the first OG channels on CZcams. Happy to see you still at it and you haven't changed a bit😅. Very professional review as always. Cheers!
Love you opinions. Your the king of reviewers
Curious to see if 10 years of making a Honda version of an MT07 is truly that much better. The MT will always have a special place in my heart regardless but can’t wait to try this bike too
The Hornets amazing! I test rode one while my 12 month old bike was being serviced and bought one straight away 😂
I had a 2017 Model Mt-07 motorcycle. I've never used a new model Mt-07 before, but Although I've been using Hornet for 3 days, this Motorcycle is a complete crazy one. I couldn't stop as much as I went with Yamaha, it goes very fast with the help of the quickshifter with the Hornet and I can stop safely thanks to the power brakes. You should definitely test a Hornet. Then you will understand what I said. 😊
That was great work Micheal and team., btw
great video and content
👌
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it
Thank you for this detail comparison
Love your reviews. Thank you for doing what you do. Can't wait for the new Hornet to reach USA.
I actually like the looks of the hornet a lot but to be honest, I like the look of the CB500F also. Hope these hornets come to Australia!
Not sure about the Yamaha's top end being "interesting" .... unless by interesting you mean "a bit lacking". They have great bottom end and mid range grunt but start to run out of breath fairly early ... very sweet in the 30 to 80mph range though. I enjoyed the one I owned for a year and a half or so. No doubt the Honda has it beaten very comprehensively though ... seems like a better bike all around and for less money too, could even spec the quickshifter on to it and it would still be cheaper than the MT, plus the Honda quickshifter is a proper two way job not just the up shifter thats offered as an option on the MT.
That would be reviewer talk for "it could be better." XD
The intro with the paper thing had me giggling in the gym
Rode an MT-07 in Spain for a few days back in 2016 and as someone coming from sports bikes and Street Triples at the time, I remember it being pretty underwhelming in terms of power and also handling. The suspension felt soft and bouncy. The fueling was great though and throttle very forgiving at low speeds, it felt like an easy going lazy bike, but at the same time felt a bit cheap in terms of build quality. Interested in the new Hornet though, with its massive power advantage (27% more!) and it's cheaper! Not a fan of the looks personally - the beak looks too pointy.
Excellent vid. I rode the Honda with Michelin Pilot 5s and it felt great.
Yes !!! Thank you for the video
Just great review. Again u do great job.
Just got a Hornet as a little replacement commuter bike, very pleased with it, especially as it came with Road 5's and I use Road 6's on my s1000r.
Love seeing the legend neevesy
The best proper honest review period IMO ❤
Brilliant video and review.
I was looking for an upgrade from my mt03. And this wonderfully done video solved the problem. Always a pleasure to listen to Michael. Second bike of my life, Hornet !
CB500F
Really nice Video. Waiting for the follow up comparison between the Suzuki GSX8S and the Honda CB750 😊
if the CB750 is .. then it’s only taken Honda 8 years to catch up , the MT-07 came out in 2015
and won bike of the year everywhere . So well done to Honda for finely catching up ..
and Xtra well done to Yamaha for bringing out a brilliant bike in 2015 & ever since.
Super solid reviewww
Great review
Looks go to the MT but sound goes to the Hornet. For my money, I think the hornet edges out the MT by quite a bit... but I wish it was prettier 😅
Good honest review.
I've had a lot of Yamahas in my life, and only Yamahas in my garage currently. My buddy had a cb500r that was really pathetic on power, handled fine but it wasn't anything to write home about, and the engine characteristic was just bland, no revs, not a good sound. Honda's for the past few years have been in a weird place in the market, usually down on power, and steep on price compared to the competition, but this new Honda fills me with hope. Yamaha's had the corner for power and reliability, and of recently prices have been climbing astronomically. That Honda makes a GREAT noise, has the power numbers to back it up (and not by a small margin), you get reliability as Honda is known for, AND you get into it for less money. LOVE it, that's the competition I want to see, I'm strongly considering Honda for my next bike.
Brought my mt 2020 and I don’t think iv ever been out on it and not done a wheelie or 3 😂 😆Honda is peaking my interest tho as is gsx8s can’t wait for your review of that 😊 ❤❤ enjoy your channel 👌
Go ride the Hornet it’s awesome!
Always the highest quality reviews. I hope Honda does the equivalent of an XSR version of this Hornet. I think the bike is awesome but they borrowed the styling from an older CB1000R which makes it very dated or bland in my eyes.
Another excellent test from the ever impressive Mr Neeves.👍
Crazy how expensive these "cheap" bikes have gotten. I remember buying my MT-07 brand new in 2016 for $6000 CAD, which is like 3600 pounds.
Excellent review sir! This is perfect, and thank you. I'm working out and hoping the CB750 comes to the U.S.
when your on the mood like in here,
I Love your beautiful smile and I enjoy
everything else, complete and informing as always.
Great video. Would love to see this battle between the Hornet Vs. GSX8S.
Nice honest review 👍
Wow! This review is top notch!
Fantastic review!
The choreography in this video is by far the best part of this video! If i meet the director i would shake his hand! A man at a desk in a full bike suit with paperwork on an dragstrip/air runway says it all! Is nothing short or short hand comedy
i have a 2004 hornet and I LOVE IT !!! I"M NOT SOLD HONDA I"LL KEEP MINE FOREVER IF I CAN !!!! INLINE 4 ALL DAY !!!!
the hope is that Yamaha strike back with an updated MT-07 to rival or beat the Hornet... that is why competition is gud.
I was at lake vyrnwy at the weekend and someone on a hornet rode around and I must say it does sound good echoing off the water and through the trees...
good vid. could we have more please
Great review. Now I just wish it would come to the US.
So exciting to have a true competitor in that market segment. Congrats hornet!
Oh yeah! Neeves review! As usual, proper pro review.👍👍
Yesssss … I literally just found out about the Hornet 750 today
I was waiting for the typical Honda leads then some how journalists still give the nod to the other bikes....especially a staple like the MT07. So I applaud the video and what appears to be a genuine head to head, ty
Excellent review
Not sure what the relevance of all the wheelies is except to flex your riding skills.
That engine in the Honda is what makes it so appealing with a nimble chassis, it’s a winner. Priced incredibly well but no doubt this will increase soon.
Great video
A lot of reviewers came to the same conclusion but I didn’t believe until you confirmed it. New middle weight king. Wow! Competition is great for the consumer. A lot of good bikes out there.
Id say the Aprilia Tuono 660over both of them. To me it’s by far the best bike but I guess a different price range. I think it would have to be considered the King by every metric.
@@daytonasayswhat9333 The Tuono is a great bike as well. If money wasn’t a factor I’d probably agree with you. That being said, 90ish hp, Honda reliability, and finish….the hornet probably has the best bang for the buck🤷🏽♂️. Yamaha fan boy here just being honest
@@yassim0008 well, the comment was middleweight “king.” That’s more like the middleweight “prince” if it’s based on price, lol.
Yeah, I race the R7 professionally
I own an 2022 MT-07 & never had a thought of regret it is super awesome & raw I enjoy it.👌🏽👍🏽👏🏽💯 Other brands like the Honda & Suzuki are trying to copy and add more for that I would upscale to a MT-09 & be even more happier.👌🏽👍🏽👏🏽💯
I have an MT07 for 4 years now. Love it since day one. The Hornet looks like the next MT07. Hopefully Yamaha steps it up in the future and maybe I’ll sell my MT07 for that one. Good review!
Am excited to see if Yamaha fire back and actually develop the mt-07 again
My conclusion is Yamaha need to make a whole new Mt 07 to complete. It was at the top of its game back in the day,but then but now theirs a new kid on the block
I love this review!
Good review, thanks, and well done Honda!
One comment though, about the "fun" (and yes I know I am an unskilled old fart when riding) but poppin wheeles as a measure? Hmmm. So which bike is more fun if you prefer to be more safe (and legal) and keep both wheels on the ground?
Also - no words about which would be better if indeed you would do a longer trip, say over 4 hours away? I know, that's for sure not what these bikes should be about, but still.
Again, enjoyed the video, thank you!
There's definitely a big difference between the two suspensions. Yamahas is cheap like a pogo stick and very budget. The Honda has showa big piston front forks, unfortunately not adjustable but a lot better and a lot safer. Not sure why stock tyres always come up in these reviews? Can never weigh them in as they'll always be replaced and are not a permanent part of the bike.
Tires cost several hundred pounds to replace, you can't just ignore them. If you have to throw away the tires because they aren't good, you've just spent money that the other guy could've put towards a new rear shock for example
@@dirkmohrmann8960 yeah but you're inevitably going to replace them anyway. Several hundred pounds is insanely steep for tyres. That's $1400 here, a new set of good tyres here would be about less than half that. After 15000km will you be super stoked about buying the cheaper bike based on its stock tyres?
Well I didn’t have to replace the tires on my 2022 mt07. And after spending a few dollars on a bottle of belray 20wt fork oil and two pvc risers and adjusting the spring pre load on the shock the suspension is fine. I’m not saying that it’s better than the hornet but it gets old hearing so many people bitching about the cheap suspension when it’s so cheap and easy to improve it in an afternoon spent in the garage.
@@davidleonard8369... Might be because your bikes still relatively new? But that's good for you anyway, you've obviously got the tools and experience to make a suspension mod quick and simple.. More power to you man. I doubt the average rider has that kinda setup and experience.
@@leo83139 yeah I’ve been riding and racing my whole life so I have the knowledge and tools to do it. But here’s what rubs my fur the wrong way. The people bashing the forks on the mt07 obviously know about you tube because that’s where they do the bashing. I couldn’t live with how bad the forks were so I just searched CZcams and found a channel called Dave moss tuning and he has a step by step video on how to do it. I was shocked at the difference especially since I was initially thinking about adding pre load to the stock springs. Turns out that once you have the correct viscosity and volume of oil in the fork legs you actually reduce the pre load 10mm.
I like the table review ;)
Great comparison.
Great to see Honda back - it has been a while!
Another excellent video Mr Neeves and, I think, quite correct.
I have just bought a Honda CB750AP Hornet and am very pleased with it - I owned a Yamaha 700 Tracer (MY 2016) and whilst it was light and very fuel economic, the handling was truely awful and could only be sorted by replacing the fork cartridge units. I have also had a Z650RS for a day to ride and enjoyed that, although I felt that it vibrated somewhat more than the Hornet so wasn't so enjoyable. The Z650 handled OK though and had a solid, quality feel to it, so not all bad. The only query I have on your review is why Honda provided you with non-standard tyres. My Hornet has MIchelin's and the demo bike I rode was similarly shod. Very odd as I would rate the Michelins above the Dunlop on the 3 bikes I had had the Michelins fitted to! I believe that the Dunlops are fitted to EU bikes, so maybe this bike originated in Europe?
The killer comparison video I think would be the Hornet -v- GSX-8S and look forward to watching that when you do it!
Hello, very good analysis, next video, Honda Hornet vs Suzuki GSX 8S. In France a lot of bikers wait of your feed-back.
Pretty good analysis in my opinion. But, things considered, MT07 is basically a 10 year old bike that stills holding the position in there, but has been overtaken by the new/fresher Honda CB750. Electronics, new engine, dash, etc. The problem with the CB750, is that literally everyone (and myself), was waiting a 4 cylinder 600 (the true Honda Hornet) and we got that. Carries this feeling of "disappointment" I would say, that makes it not shine as it should. And the aesthetics, I would prefer the MT07 over the CB750, but that would be more a matter of personal taste. Very nice video, again!
That’s what I thought until I rode one last week, I’m never buying an inline 4 again! The hornets engines way better, sounds better and has instant low down power you don’t get with an inline 4. Honda made the right decision with the engine.
Why don't we get that bike stateside? They can't claim they wouldn't sell.
This guy is great. Congrats
Hi guys, just want to note that the music was suddenly quite loud and overly bass sounding for a minute there at 13:28. Not very pleasant to my ears. Either my headphones are shot or you guys really messed something up with sound levels
Great and transparent test, thank you Bike Magazine. Now, we are waiting for the New Suzuki GSX-8S test, another parallel twin against both...
