  • This is the original route to London where regular water access hollows were required throughout the route for horses and cattle. In 1555 the condition of such up and down valley routes were degrading, so a law was passed requiring the local Parish to maintain their sections, but often not done. It was only in 1822 when this track was bypassed by a new higher therefore dryer main road towards Ross-on-Wye then onto London.
