I was in the foster care system in Canada, my tribe doesn't give a crap about me. I worked for other tribes and also for the child protection program with one tribe. We did family history searches that consisted of 300 plus letters to family members, looking for someone to care for the children in foster care. Many cases nobody is able to willing to take these children. I was told by people that ICWA does not apply to child protection on the reservation and that should not be the case. ICWA is to return children home. Well I have never been able to return home, the housing list is 35 years long. So I have decided to make my life elsewhere. This system is so broken and does not care for us. They say ICWA is to protect the children, but it does not and only applies to counties, not the tribes. The tribes are just as guilty at separating families and not looking back.

I'm sorry, but why should there be a support system from *outside the tribe* to keep children in their original homes?

Hi. We're a big state-recognized tribe of about 5,000 enrolled members, and we often get desperate requests by extended tribal family members of the impending loss of our children to the non-tribal child welfare system. We try to help, but we continually get cut out with the refrain: since you're not a federally recognized tribe..... Any advice?

The government was designed to work from the bottom up from the indiviual communities. Use to people went to the local city county meetings and if they had problems within communities than the towns people worked together to solve towns problems. It was never designed to work from the top down. If the USA IS WORKING FROM THE TOP DOWN THAN THAT DESTROYS HERITAGE. We are all not the same and came from many different cultures and we need to embrace our cultures and preserve them. We all should be able to know our cultures and be proud. All schoold use to be private and held in the towns churches with that towns moral and and ethics that fit that community. Now we have public welfare schools and we all see how well that is working. WE HAVE BULLYING AND TEACHERS THAT CAN DO NOTHING ABOUT IT. iF THE STATE IS GOING TO FORCE YOUR CHILD TO GO TO SCHOOL AT A WELFARE SCHOOL THAN A ADULT SHOULD BE ON EVERY SCHOOL BUS PROTECTING YOUR CHILD. we do not have the correct protecting in our schools.
