- Hi everyone! I finally got out to a city I've been dying to visit for so long! I took the train from Seoul to Gwangju (yes, now most commonly known as J-Hope's hometown lol) and spent about a day and a half there while also visiting Boseong and Damyang (those vlogs will be up next!!) It's a really cool city with a lot of history, fashion, and friendly people :) Hope I did Gwangju justice with the time that I had and I can't wait to be back!! Sending love~

My Solo Weekend Trip to Gwangju, Korea VLOG | shopping, markets, and cafes
Here is the video I mentioned about Korean history in film: czcams.com/video/oF1qr5tECs0/video.html
If you like seeing cities other than Seoul, check out my Outside of Seoul playlist here: bit.ly/2YLR3h4
If youre in Gwangju, you have to go to nearby Naju to try their famous pears and Gomtang (beef soup). Or you can visit 김강심 restaurant to try the bean porridge and noodles. The place is huge and constantly packed. You can order too if you're concerned about the virus. South Cholla-do has the best food of all of Korea.
Almost 40 years have passed since the Gwangju democratization movement began. But as Koreans,
hearing the name of Gwangju, we still have complicated feelings of sadness, sorry, pride...
At that time, I was a teen in Seoul. And the whole media just conveyed brief statements(not news) that it was a riot by a crazy mob. So the rest of the Koreans could not know the truth.
However, as we got to aware of the truth, we did not stop the resistance movement throughout the 1980s. And most of the young people, after they entered college, participated actively in demonstrations for democracy.
You can see us in the film '1987'- Cari already introduced(Korean films based on true events).
The people of Gwangju and Jeolla-province are like Irish people compared to western viewpoint.
This is because of the cunning discrimination policy that the ruling powers of that time subtly differentiated this region from the rest of Korea through separate governance.
It is not unrelated to this historical background that people in this region love art, have a high spirit of tolerance, and are very considerate to the weak.
Through this process, the universal values of democracy and human rights have thus established as the common values for all Koreans that cannot be reversed. Thanks to cari cakes for reminding me of the shouts of my youth.
**When you going to Damyang, don't forget to taste tteokgalbi(chopped seasoned beef rib steak)
💜💜💜
Thank you so much for sharing this ! :)

Taxi is a great film to introduce someone to the history surrounding May 18.
excellent!!!
Gwangju literally has so much hobi vibes😂😂😂. No doubt about him being the sunshine that he is.
hahah chill and fashionable!
@@caricakes oh yes
was thinking the same thing throughout the entire video!
Youth of May check that out.
As a Gwangju citizen, I really loved your content! And yes, my hometown has a very dark past. My grandmother convinced my grandfather and my three uncles to go to suncheon for a while just in case because the paratroopers were shooting people whom they suspect as a "communist rioter". There are people who still saying things like the list of people who have been rewarded for the uprising is fake, citizens of Gwangju and Jeolla province are communists...etc. But as long as we remember what really happened on May 1980, democracy shall prevail in the end.
the footage of the museum made me emotional, especially because im currently reading human acts. thank you for including this in your vlog and also for the love is love message 🏳️🌈
Its a powerful book! Sending love 💕
my left eye enjoying this blog, while my right eye tries to catch up with the online class 👁👄👁
bahahaha omg
omg, same 🤣
Oh my god cari, the events of the Gwangju uprising are what developed my love and interest in Korean history and why I am learning the language. I went to Gwangju in 2018 and I remember going through that museum. So beautiful and well put together. Thank you for reminding me of my time. Loved this video❤️
It was incredible!! And thanks for watching!
Well. You managed to make me tear up and then later laugh. Whole range of reacting to this trip. 😘😂👍Good job. Til next time.
🥰🙏
The stark difference of laughing at a dog running and then the next second seeing the memorial for all the people that passed
I can't explain my feelings properly because English is not my mother language. But I feel so lost in Korea street when I watching. I know I can never go to Korea :") so Cari please do not stop recording video in korea please.I cant even express my feelings right know but I wish you understand me in someway :)
im happy to have you as a virtual travel partner^^~
This city is so historical and full of culture, I'm impress! Such a beautiful place to be, I'm so glad for the opportunity to see it through your perspective. Thank you!
thanks for watching :)
i love it when she says ‘we’re going ...’ ‘we’re heading over...’ ☺️ makes me feel like i’m actually traveling with her
🥰
Even though I am Korean, I have never been to Gwangju yet. The May 18 Gwangju pro-democracy uprising is a painful history of South Korea. Thanks to the uprising, there is a free democratic Republic of Korea now. Thank you for visiting the Democracy Movement Museum. 🙏🏻
🙏🙏🙏
My son taught in Gwanghwamun and our first trip to Korea was 2 weeks here. Was a good introduction to Korean culture and the democracy movement. Really love the May 18th Memorial. Thanks for a great vlog! 😷
🙏
Gwangju (what possessed auto-correct to putGwanghwamun!!). Lol
I’ve been watching you for a little while now and just wanted to drop a comment to say thank you for sharing your adventures with us! I can tell how much effort you put into crafting your videos - they are so calming to watch and it’s really wonderful to get to travel around Korea with you 🤗
Thank you so much omg 🥺
I'm SO happy that you came to Gwangju! I live here and it's so disheartening to see it overlooked in favour of the other cities. It's so chill here, they take pride in being different. Some tips for those who might visit - Daein Market is better at night. Dongmyeongdong is the best area for cafes. Art Street and the Asia Culture Centre area is best at weekends. The ACC (before covid) usually has a tonne of performances or art markets.
I was just learning about the Gwangju massacre in my lecture this morning so this is kind of surreal.. watching the video it's hard to imagine that something so horrific happened there so recently..
😔🙏
광주는 내 고향입니다. 이렇게 방문해주고 영상으로 남겨서 소개해주어 진심으로 고맙습니다. 그 현장과 역사를...!
Gwangju is so pretty 😍 thank you Cari for showing us around ☺️
thanks for coming along!
As a non-Korean, when I hear Gwangju, it equals to me with the Gwangju Uprising. Thanks for sharing. 💕
Getting lost in a new city or new place is half as fun as getting to your actual destination. Well, just be sure you are in a safe area, otherwise, it would be a great nightmare. South Korea is relatively safe even at night. Just make sure you have money, phone for your google map, armed with important Korean words and you’ll all be good.
I moved to Gwangju in February to teach English and I really like it here! It might not be as exciting as Seoul but the people here are so friendly and I feel right at home. Was very excited to see that you made a vlog about it! Enjoyed it a lot :)
as a gwangju citizen, i recommand u yeongsan gang river bike road(walk road). as a former seoul citizen, yeounsan gang in gwangju boundary is better than han river in aspect of natural beauty.
I had chills all over my body the entire time you were in the museum.
Just wanted to check out Gwangju because I was curious where Hoseok spent his childhood and I have seen lots of vlogs for busan /Seoul but not much of Gwangju so I was really happy to see this vlog
Thanks for watching!
who is hoseok??????
@@intotherain235 Hoseok is an artist/ member of a Kpop boy band called BTS. He's most well known by the stage name of J-Hope as far as I know. Hopefully this info was somewhat helpful to you😊
hopefully i can visit korea after corona ends😭
it will be waiting for you
I live in korea too but my vlogs are full of books 😫😫 seriously nice to get to know Korea through you (which is kinda bittersweet but lots of love cari)🥰
🥰🥰🥰
It makes me so happy that Hobi featured Gwangju along with other big cities in his Hope on the Street docuseries. I hope to visit one day. Thank you for sharing your journey with us.
When you said that everyone in gwangju is fashion forward I thought of Hobi because his style is amazing
Can we just stop for a moment and talk about the scene of Cari eating the fruit? That black shirt, her loose hair, the perfect piece of hair behind her hear, and the perfect synchronized wind? I am trying to remember of adjectives cause English is not my first language, but a goddess? Yup, she looked like a goddess! ❤❤😍😍
hi cari! I think 'yuja' is more correct word for citron better than yuzu.. Yuja was eaten in korea since the 7c and it introduced to japan. Especially yuja tea used to be eaten only in korea . Anyway, enjoyed your video! i'ven never been to gwangju but it looks pretty good
Yes! But for some reason the shop called the flavor yuzu (pretty sure its the same fruit just diff name🥰)
Yuzu sounds like the Japanese pronunciation, and yuja is Korean
Yuja is how Koreans say it and Yuzu is a Japanese term but it's the universal name basically
we finally found out the source behind Hobi vibes. It's in the air. Thank you Cari
😂🙏 he was born with it!
@@caricakes definitely 😂
oh my goodness that little story about the old man telling strangers to "be happy" made me soooo happy omg
This is just what I needed after a long day ✨💕
you deserve it ^^
@@caricakes thank you 😻
I studied abroad in Gwangju for one year in 2017-18 and I loved the city ☺️ I have such fond memories of it and loved seeing the places I used to go to in your video. I actually live in a different city in Korea now, and still need to make a trip back to visit! Hopefully someday soon 🥰

I really love museums and history, so seeing what the Gwangju uprising is about is very interesting, thank you for sharing!
Thanks for coming along!
Yaaas! I loved my visit to Gwangju last year! Wish I could’ve stayed longer and explored more. Always enjoy living vicariously through your adventures ❤️
it was such a cool city! can't wait to go back :)
Thank you for featuring Gwangju! It's one of my bucket lists if I will go visit SoKor again. 😊 And I love your vlogs as well, your narration is so comforting. All the best.❤
good morning, Cari! 😍 was about to sleep but need to watch this first.
good morning!!! or...good night! hahaha
been having a very emotional week and a significantly rough day today in particular... thank you for bringing a bit of peace and a mental getaway with every upload
😔🙏 you can get through it!! sending love!
Your museum visit really made me put Gwangju on top on the list for my next travel in Korea.
I watched years ago A Taxi Driver about this historical terrible time and it was very shocking. As a korean born there, french by adoption, I was so sad discovering this part of korean history, recent.
It’s definitely a powerful place to be - memorials and information is all over the city, its amazing! Hope you can visit!
The May 18th National Cemetery is just outside of Gwangju. I would recommend putting that on your list too. Bring your tissues! It is breathtaking and heartbreaking. 💔 (518.mpva.go.kr/)
Great video! I’ve been living in Gwangju for almost 2 years now and it was pretty cool to see it through a traveler’s eyes instead. Might check out some of the cafes you went to! Gwangju doesn’t have as many foreigners as Seoul or Busan, but there is a pretty decent sized community of us here. If you’re looking for a city in Korea that’s not too big but still has a welcoming foreigner community it’s a good place to be 😊
I love your vlogs so much, especially since I'm not able to get out of the house it makes me happy seeing how beautiful the world is.
Thanks for coming along with me!!
Hey Cari
It's really nice how you empathize with people or a place. I have never heard you say that a person was rude, rather you would understand why they reacted a certain way.
World would be so much better if everyone did that.
You never fail to put a huge smile on my face and so I always patiently wait for your vlogs.
And ya Love is Love ❤️✨
🙏💕
i’ve just been leaving your videos to play on my TV in the background while i’ve been reading for the past hour or so and i was pulled out of it to realize you were visiting Gwangju and talking about the uprising while i was reading ‘Human Acts’
I only recently read Human Acts and the 5.18 Memorial Museum part of your video had me in tears. 🙏
It was a really powerful exhibit 🙏
So happy hearing this from someone who lives in Seoul! I live in Gwangju and have only lived here but I love it so much and when I tell people that they're always like whaaaat? There's so much to see here and I'm glad you had such a great time!
its such a fun town!! i wish i had more time and definitely plan to come back^^
What is it like living there as a black woman? I want to apply for school there
@@chandalungu3698 my experience so far has been pretty good. Of course I get stares here and there but nothing crazy. I’ve never felt like anyone was being racist towards me but I can only speak from my personal experience and I’ve only lived in one city so it could be different depending on where you go. It does get lonely I guess sometimes being in a place where you don’t really see anyone that looks like you, especially if you’re coming from a very diverse city but overall I enjoy living here and I’m glad I made the decision to. I say go for it, you can always change cities or just leave all together if it isn’t for you. But at least you can say you did it.
Hi Cari, what a beautiful vlog. I started reading Human acts by Han Kang (in French) a few days ago and this is really moving to watch.
🙏
I've been to Korea twice but never to Gwangju. Now it's n.1 on my list of places I want to go to once I'll be able to travel again! It is mainly because of Han Kang's book... I don't know why but I felt like I had to visit those places after reading it. Thank you for showing us bits of it : )
Cant wait for you to visit!
Wow, loving all of your travel vlogs, but this one in particular as I'm a big fan of his or "herstory" haha🤗
You have a great eye for 'cinematography' as it truly makes the viewer feel as if they're on a virtual tour with you.
Thanks Cari!!
Yes!!! Gwangju vlog! This was my home city for 8 weeks last summer(2019) Oh, I love that city so much, can't wait to go back. Thank you for this video, it could not have been posted at a better time for me!! Much love
Its such a cool town ahhhh and oh man, good luck! Life decisions are hard but I’m sure whatever happens will work out for the best!!
Great clip. I really enjoyed it. Very informative on the history, tour, market, etc. Thanks for the awesome video clip.
What a cute city and it looked liked you had such nice weather for walking around 🥰 I'm always most excited for everything you eat in your videos haha Thanks for bringing us along!
it was perfect weather omg, october is treating us right!!!
Interesting! Never been to GwangJu before, but now I want to try.
Thanks Cari!
Yess hope you can!!
I read Human Acts after you recommended it on your booktube channel and to get to see all the places through your video is so visually impactful. Thank you!
So glad you read it, even tho its hard to get through.

Youth of May made me research more bout Gwangju and now CZcams suggested your videoo.
Love this Cari :)
I became aware of this place's story thanks to your movie recommendations. Thank you for sharing with Westerns Korea in depth, rather than a shallow and romanticized view.
Thanks for watching 🥰
YES to long vlogs!! Your eye for filming is so beautiful, Cari!
Thank you 😭🙏
@@caricakes Of course!!!
I fall in love with Gwangju, and will make my solo trip when the weather better,, thank you for the amazing videoo
Cari, thank you for uploading this video and all the videos visiting cities in Korea. Your information is helping me formulate an itinerary for my vacation next year or when travel restrictions are loosened. Gwangju was not on my list, but after watching this video, it is. Looking forward to your next upload.
im so happy to hear that! i took me too long to visit gwangju hahaha
@@caricakes i just did some research on ways to travel to Boseong from Gwangju. My guess is that you used the intercity or express bus. Please describe how you traveled to Boseong in your next video.
Carrrriiii this vlog reminded me of museums I would go to in DC, that museum looked incredibly powerful and I appreciate all of your footage as always 💜
🙏🙏🙏
I taught English in Gwangju in 1996-1997 at BCM, Min Byoung-chul, a private school in the downtown area. At the time there were only 300 foreigners there of which only 30 were Americans and the rest were Canadians and a few Australians. It was a very demanding environment teaching very early usually 6:30 in the morning then sometimes during the day and again during the evening until 9 pm. We taught, but we also went to cafes, restaurants, night clubs and all manor of other places with our students. It was important to cultivate “Punigi” which means “atmosphere or mood”. It was very important to have good Punigi for the students to succeed. I did have some difficulty physically because a week before arriving in Gwangju I became very sick and struggled throughout my time there especially with throat pain which was difficult as a teacher, but I look back on my time there and remember all of the good times. My Canadian friend was actually an extra in a film on the Gwangju Uprising. The event really was foundational and I heard many stories about what happened there in May of 1980. I saw a lot of student protests and their clashes with the police in the downtown area during my time there. I was so happy when Kim Dae jung became president just one year later in 1998. Thank you for posting this video. It brought back a lot of good memories.
I'm currently reading Human Acts and I came across this video and now I'm like wow! That's a lot! It's a very emotional novel.
Thank you for this amazing tour of Gwangju! I lived there 20 years ago and it was so awesome to see how it has changed....yet stayed the same. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. 💕
I’m glad!!! Thank you
Currently hiding in the bathroom at work to watch this I need a break from customers 😂

Thank you for showing us Gwangju 😊 I have always been curious to see it
Thank you for coming along 🥰
Yesss Cari virtual vacation time
Yeeeee!!
"a little praise can even make a whale dance" i know that this is a saying in korea but i'm still excited seeing that lamp because it's also a lyric from bts' whalien 52 song, and it's j-hope's part whose hometown is, as a lot of people might already know, gwangju!
I'm honestly so happy that you were happy talking about all that you're doing these days which you've been wanting to do for a very long time. Glad that you took a much needed break. All the best for the future Cari

I lived in gwangju last year and been missing it sooo much. So this video is all that i need the most. thank you so much i love you
Cari! It's good to see you travel places in Korea I never heard of before. The yangeang looks like a mix of rice cake and mochi icecream lol
Yesss its like a rice cake if it were more creamier?? Hard to describe but so yummy!!
Your bus driver reminds me of the one my friends and me had when we made a class trip to Berlin. He explained us where to get good food, shortcuts and basically chatted with us the whole time. This was a super nice experience

I looked up gwangju wanting to know more about where Hobi grew up and instead found your wonderful channel. Thank you. This was incrediblez
Watching this in England's lockdown 3.0 and I miss travel so much. Even if I could just take the train to London ( 1 hour away from my home) I'd be so greatful. These blogs are giving my travel fix for now though. Your channel has been a favourite of mind recently helped me switch off from reality and remember what it used to be like aha xx
Gwangju looks so beautiful, I now wanna go there sooo bad. The travel bug hit me hard!

i don’t think i’ve ever seen a gwangju travel vlog before! you’ve convinced. i have to go there .
