Thanks to Peter Hurley for teaching me many of these tips.
Is there a video of best practices for a headshot photo shoot for young musician artists? I need to get headshots done for several young musicians.
yep, Thank you Peter Hurley!! SHABANG!!!
I've spent my entire life as the Before pose. I'm horribly unphotogenic and have NO idea what my face is doing when someone is taking a photo of me. Family photos make me want to run and hide - and sometimes I do. So anyway, here I am, 75 years old and going to try your fabulous tips for a less weird looking me. THANK YOU!😄
You’re welcome!
Yes, definitely. Part 2, please.
Thank you!
I’ve seen some of these tips before, but never so clearly explained. Thanks!
Yes, we need part 2. Please...
Yep. Part 2 would be awesome.
John, you are helping a generation of men, who never knew they needed assistance or how to ask for it. So many men are having to reboot their lives. Thank you.
Much appreciated! You're welcome!
Wow! I just tried it out. Went to the bathroom mirror, squint and smirk and I couldn‘t believe how good I was looking in that mirror! And I was thinking: I know something you don‘t know, baby! I never liked myself in pictures but now I can‘t wait somebody wants to take a picture of me :-D. Thanks a million!
I’ve been doing exactly the opposite Ian every picture. That explains why I look like crap in photos.
Now you know! Thanks William!
Me too! Nice to be corrected
Fantastic. My wife and I took a few photos; what a difference this makes. A part 2 would definitely be appreciated
Thanks Chris!
@@40OverFashion What's up with a part 2? Totally looking forward to this if you do.
@@mheberling5939 Obviously, he's gettin' the gals via part 1 !
Yes !!!
Dang, this is EXACTLY! What I was looking for, I knew there was a tried and true formula I was looking for!
Great advice! Long ago I learned that squinting slightly while talking to people (especially when listening) makes people know that you are truly listening to their words. I learned it from a neighbor friend who was an F-16 fighter pilot who later became a U2 Spy Plane pilot (he's the real deal, for sure). His 'squint' was incredibly intense, and I simply copied him. I noticed a big difference in people's interest level when I was conversing with them. The 'little' things matter.
I’m turning 40 this year and realize that my face is changing. I no longer look good in pictures with the ease I had before. I know I need to tweak my smile and the way I pose. This is perfect. Thank you!
You’re very welcome! Thanks for watching!
LOVE THIS …please make a video that goes on for an hour! I could watch these tips all day long.
Thank you very much!
"She knows something you don't know." Yes, I've used that to convey confidence, not just in photos, but in person. I pretend I just got some amazing inside information or the job offer of a lifetime, but I'm keeping it to myself for the moment and savoring it. Can't help but squint and smirk.
Yes! Exactly!
Awesome trick! Your body knows what to do (most of the time)
Just at a right time. I need new profile photos and I have a double chin. Thank you very much.
Thanks for watching!
It’s funny when you are taking your own photos everything you know about photography, lighting, posing etc goes out the window 😂😂.
just stand by that window and you're good. ;-)
Yes, I'll take another hour of your selfie lesson. After nearly 60 years of photography, I realise the camera actually always lies. We have to work it to our advantage. Including colour grading etc in post production. One tip I would've mentioned, is don't take a wide angled selfie. Instead put your camera/smartphone on a tripod, place it about 3-5 metres away, and zoom in. Less big noses and chins, and less high foreheads. That's why we look good in the mirror, but awful in our phone selfies. 😉
Received after my recent purchase of an Anson Belt set...
Hi Julian,
That is great to hear, I am so glad that you found us from watching Fashion After 40! He is a great guy and we couldn't be happier for his support. I really appreciate the kind words.
I did the squinting very briefly after watching this vid and it totally works. What a difference when i just took two selfies.
Thanks for watching!
This is great. I worked professionally for many years taking these types of photos. I learned a lot from you. One of my tricks was 'the beauty angle is the camera is always above the nose,' which your chicken move also does. And you absolutely prove your point over and over again. Well done.
Thank you!
This had me laughing, as I’ve been doing all these tricks in casual pictures since I did modelling in my 20’s for a few years (I’m 45 now) and I still get old aquaintances commenting on social media how do I still look so good after all these years. It’s just the right angles! Lmao The other old trick I still use is if I’m not open mouth smiling, I clench my teeth to sharpen my jawline, though my mouth still looks completely natural. This was all practiced during my modelling days so it’s second nature to me now! I’d forgotten I’m even doin it all til I watched this. Well done for sharing the knowledge.
I wish I would have seen this before this past weekend. My daughter just got married and I was in a shit load of pictures. Thanks for the advice John!
I learned this years ago when I noticed that I looked a lot better in photos taken outside where I was naturally squinting. It's called 'warrior eyes'. Women are naturally more attracted to men who's eyeballs are less 'bulgy' and thus, less vulnerable in combat situations. David Beckham and Clint Eastwood V's Stephen Merchant and Marty Feldman.
My best picture was taken one day when i took off my glasses to pose with my grandson. I think now that u mention, the fact i couldnt see the camera, I was SQUINTING! I think it was one of my best pics and done so by mistake. I was also sitting down on some steps , so my arms looked natural with my arms on my knees. Another good pics was years ago when had my head slightly turned with a slight smile but looking at the camera. These were just natural spur of the moment pics. I also think i look best with just a slight smile instead of a big smile. Your tricks are spot on.
John your the man “ sorry about comparing your chat up lines
To Little Joe talking to his Horse 🐴 in a previous Vid 👌🇬🇧
Thank you SO much for sharing these tips!! ❤❤
This is amazing advice! Just today I was on dating apps and I could not help but shake my head at the number of profile pics in which people looked so unapproachable. It amazes me how people just don't see it in their own pics. I will certainly be re-evaluating my own pics after this lesson, so thanks!
Thank you for commenting! I think I might do a follow up video for dating apps.
A man of different talents, John you're a gentleman, and a scholar.
Thank you very much!
NEED PART 2! This was FANTASTIC!
I am a fan, but must say this is one of your best videos.
I would love to see a part 2 of more tips and tricks!
I've been asked to paint a portrait professionally but had no idea how to do a photoshoot for it. Clueless. This is brilliant as it opens options and you teach simply and practically. This is very generous, open sharing by a professional and appreciated. Yes, part two please. The photoshoot for a large portrait of my four kids took 250 shots, 90 minutes and Photoshop to piece together a "shared" moment. My kids are more patient than someone who is paying.
Most people have no idea how many shots it takes to get an acceptable image. I do landscapes, and might shoot about 100 images of anything, a rock, tree, some clouds, to get one I am pleased with. As for portraits, I don't do people. Except my grandchildren and was recently asked to do a head shot for Linked-In. I wish I had known this stuff when I did that, but fortunately he is so handsome and photogenic it is hard to take a bad photo of him. But I was sweating it.
Interesting. Makes sense good photos of people involves a lot of tricks and technique, I simply never thought about it and was clueless. Great video topic.
Thank you!
Great tips John! I use my Slick Collar almost every work day. That was a fantastic pick up for some of my shirts.
Perfect timing! I just lost my job and am going freelance at 62 years young. In this brave new world, I will need a "persona" on social media and my website. I have booked a photographer for my photoshoots, and this is a TOTALLY new experience for me! Thanks so much for the tips, especially as I am a little bigger than previously planned.
Wishing you good luck!
Yes, that "little bigger" part is a real challenge. Filed under: "Things we took for granted while young."
Very similar. I was really surprised how effective it is. All the best with your next journey and freelance work.
Good luck!!
This is amazing--thank you for sharing! I love your before and afters! My last headshot person basically just pointed a camera at me and said very little as I got increasingly uncomfortable, and you can absolutely see that in the pictures. These are tips that photographers and clients alike can benefit from! :)
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching!
AND I bought a Slick Collar set! Let your sponsor know. (Apologies for buying it from Amazon instead of through your link but I am in Australia)
Excellent advice. Just in time for my cruise!
Very interesting video, different than your usual but full of great information. Thank you John! Definitely a part 2 is needed.
Glad you enjoyed it!
This is a great video. Would love a part 2 please. Already looking forward to updating both my professional and personal/dating photos.
You got it! Thanks Tom!
Going through the older stuff. Amazing content, thanks as always!
Glad you enjoy it!
Any man wearing a 'Slick Collar' is de facto a style-free zone.
Can't wait for part 2! Thanks for sharing the magic
Thank you! I will get to work on part two.
So here’s my trick to get a real smile instead of a plastered-on hostage photo. A true smile shows up in your eyes as well, which is why fake ones jump out at us. So when I need to smile for a shot I think of something that reliably makes me laugh. Just the funniest thing I can think of, no matter how goofy. That’s usually enough to at least make me smile such that it actually happens up and down my entire face instead of just at the lips.
Holy smokes! One of the most useful videos I've seen on the Internet in a while. Good stuff.
Thank you!
Man!!! John, where were you when I was in high school, when I was getting senior pics? Superb talent!!
Thank you!
Brilliant as usual, definitely do a Part II please!
Part two coming soon! Thank you very much!
Very interesting. Would love to see a part 2.
Thanks Eric!
This advice is useful whether you're the one in the photo, or the one taking them
So true!
Omg he's so encouraging! And knows how!!❤❤❤
Thank you so much for this video, I wish I'd found it many a year ago! Just tried out the squinting trick and it's a revelation. I always look awkward or surprised in so many photos, and rarely feel very representative of me at my best, but this makes so much of a difference!
Hear you- I can't take a decent picture to save myself...
This was terrific! Your videos are always good, but this was especially so. No doubt, because you were talking about your expertise in a career you had a real passion for. The last move is one I'm going to check out right away. But my favorite moment was your pointing out the dog who owned the photo shoot!
Wow! This was FANTASTIC coaching! Thank you so much! And yes, some of your photos were just amazing! Subscribed...
This is by far one of the most amazing advice you've put out John. THANK YOU!
Thank you!
Mate, you’re a genius! I’ve followed your channel for a while now, bought a bunch of stuff on your recommendation, but as I’ve just picked up photography again, this was 11 minutes of amazing tips and content. A follow up would be stellar! Cheers,
Thank you! I will definitely work on a part two.
Totally awesome insight. I'm always one to take pics and I always try to make them look as awesome as I possibly can but with these tips and tricks I can't wait to get out there and make the people I capture looks more distinguished. More elegant. More sleek. Thank u so much and I cannot wait for part 2 😁😁
Thank you!
Great vid. I'm 53 and I didn't know ANY of this! I looked back thru pics of myself and the best ones were when I had a slight squint. Crazy. I'm going to have a Clint Eastwood face from now on. LOL. Thank you.
Ha! Glad it was helpful!
I have always hated having a my picture taken of me. I am 68 years young. I can't wait to try these posing tips you have shared. Thanks man!
Thanks for the photo tips! I pass a photo of my wife and me daily of us on our honeymoon, and I’ve always wondered how I looked so cool that day. I was squinting and smirking 😂
I’ve lost 65lbs since March of this year and am really wanting to take some new headshots and casual shots (walking, sitting with a glass of bourbon in hand, a cigar, reading, etc)…would love to see a part 2 of this!
Thank you! Working on it!
You rock, simple twists big churn outs! Look forward to ▶️2
Loved your work. Fantastic tips
Your videos are so amazing! And this one is no exception. Your channel has got to be one of the best on YT! You make it look so easy, but I'm sure it's time consuming to get everything to sound and look so polished, and of course, to present such interesting content.
Thank you very much!
Mr. Hurley: You are a fine, masterful, instructor. You impart more important information in 10 minutes than most professors do in an entire class hour. Thank you for aiding me to have a better perspective on the importance of sound and proper appearance.
Your attention to detail (amongst the other great attributes that you have) makes all the difference. This is why clients come back to you for more headshots! i learnt something new today! Looking forward to a part 2!
Thank you very much for commenting!
Pure gold! Thank you!
Nice one Johnners. As a 'Support artiste' ( or 'Extra' ) I'm always asked for 'selfies' by the casting companies. Engaging a professional photographer each time would be too expensive. These relatively simple techniques help enormously. Thank you, and looking forward to part two.
Thank you!
Right on target! I've been doing it myself and coaching my girlfriends to doing this squinch and "do-like-the-turtle" hack and everytime there has been the "awwwww-I-didn't-know-I-was-so-photogenic" feedback ))
Nice going!
Instant classic! Thanks. Looking forward to Part 2!
Thank you! I’ll get to work on part two right away! Thanks again
No nonsense and very helpful! Thanks a bunch!
You're welcome!
"... the baby is killing it ..." YESSS
I just posted a picture on my FB page explaining something similar to this, just last week. A friend was teaching me how to pose.
Perfect Greg! Thanks for watching!
Thank you! YAAS, PART TWO!!!😉
Wow!
Thank you!
This is super help for us seniors and dating app pics!
Great vid, John and especially helpful since I always feel and look awkward in photos despite being in decent shape and dressing well.
PS Slick Collar made a huge difference in leveling up the appearance of my dress shirts. Money well spent!
Awesome! Thank you for watching!
Please go on for another hour! Probably one of the best videos you've ever produced. I'm a 58 year old insurance producer and need new headshots for advertising. Hopefully your tips will make me appear more confident and approachable. Until today I could never put my finger on Bruce Willis's image until today, he's carried that confident badass smile thru his entire career going all the way back to Moonlighting with Cybill Shepherd!
Awesome! Thank you very much!
Love this info! Ive been bingeing on your past and present videos, I needed help to pack for a 3 week trip to the UK, Thanks.
Here’s one I missed. Thanks again John
Really useful, some outdoor advice would be great, thanks.
Thank you!
Hi John!!!! The best photo poses i've ever seen on CZcams or Instagram, how a simple face look changes everything... i always look awkward on photos, i'll try my best next time!!!! You should do part 2 ... full body outside or indoor! Congratulations from a subscriber from Brazil!!!!👊🏽🙏🏽
Thank you!
I'm so glad I found your videos! I desperately need coaching as my photos are always unflattering. I'm going to use your techniques. Thank you! You're an excellent instructor!
You are so welcome!
Excellent tips! Thank you.
I learned these tricks when I was trying to learn the basics of portrait photography, but this is the most concise summary of the information that I've seen.
I would love to see the Part 2 that you suggested.
Thank you! Part two coming soon
@@40OverFashionThanks!
When is the part 2 !! 😊
Amazing tips . Thanks So much ..I have always hated photos of myself . I'll try these tips to see if they come out better . That last move you did . For the turkey neck was spot on ! I could see the difference in your face immediately.
Perfect! Thank you for watching!
Really really good! Thanks, especially when on trips and all the photos we take of each other!
Workin hard. Great job. Love the album of icons.
today's video was so insightful. I never even knew that we had to look a certain way to make our photographs look better ...and that can alter people's perception about you. Thank you once again for this video education.i loved it.
Thanks for watching!
BANG! THE SQUINT WORKS! Was testing my new phone with selfies just before watching this. I have large eyes, and am also slightly cross-eyed, but that isn't apparent as I always wear glasses. Just took a quick snap with a squint and a knowing smirk. Still an ugly mug, but exponentially hotter!
Awesome! Thanks for commenting and watching!
what a guy! always sharing, thanks buddy.
Great advice John, thank you. Definitely a part 2.
Thank you!
Fascinating. You know what you are talking about. My Wife, Son and I just watched this together. Having taken a few photos before after (so to speak), but without the coaching we were in hysterics, and we all agreed that we hadnt even thought about this, or recognized it in professional portrait photography. Thank you.
Sub'd. we will check out more of your videos. Slick Collar is a great idea.
Thank you very much!
Well it doesn’t hurt when you are naturally handsome with a good personality that comes through your smile. I have watched most of your videos in a few weeks… be healthy and happy 😎 Bmore Mike
Thank you Mike!
Great techniques that I’ll use! Thank you!
Yes. We’d love you to go on more about this topic. Please do.
Terrific video! And yes, a Part 2 is definitely required!
Thank you! Will do!
WOW! Fantastic, an advanced photography course in 10 minutes which explains why my Hollywood good looks always come out on my driver's license like a mug shot out of San Quentin! Like Goose said in TopGun 'I should have been a photographer' ! LOL.
Haha!
Amazing tips! Thank you!!!
I THOROUGHLY ENJOYED THIS!
Thank you for watching!
So Derek Zoolander's Blue Steel wasn't that wrong! 🤪😂
Ive used the last technique and have seen a professional or two but have still taken awful pictures all my adult life, no more my Guy! Probably the most impactful vid I’ve seen since joining, thank you! Please a Part Deux my Friend!
Would LOVE a 60minute video on this subject! So interesting! Thank you! Part 2 please! The longer the better!
If you change the video speed to x1/4 it gets closer to your desired 60minute length video!
Great tips! Thanks for sharing.
