SHUT DOWN AT THE SCALES!!! TRAILER TOWING 'TATOR TIME!!!

- It's just me and the 'Tator on this, seemingly, simple job. Two drivers get shut down at a scale house due to a cracked trailer frame and the company calls us to tow it to our shop and perform the repairs. I called the officer at the scale house to ask if he would allow us to tow it from the site before I left the shop and he politely agreed. So....I take the 'Tator, our Peterbilt 389X with a Miller Industries, Century 1150R Rotator, on a little trip north to pick up the damaged trailer. For some viewers this might be the first time seeing the fifth wheel attachment we use to connect to and haul trailers. Hope you enjoy this, different, yet satisfying job. As always, thanks for watching and God bless!!!

There are many questions, assumptions, and negative comments regarding this video. There are also many positive comments and people who state they learned a lot from this video. I appreciate all the positive comments!!! This is a family-friendly channel and our community works hard to remain positive, educational, and uplifting. Now, please allow me to explain a few things for those of you with questions, assumptions, and negative comments. First, the CUSTOMER called us to pick up their trailer and perform the repairs. The scale house only shut the trailer down....they do NOT dictate who can repair or tow the trailer. The CUSTOMER has the option to call whomever they choose. Second, towing with a traditional tow truck VS towing with a road tractor.....there are many reasons, but primarily it comes down to liability. We specialize in towing damaged vehicles and have the proper insurance to handle these situations. It may not make sense to some, but this is what we do for a living and this is part of our standard duties. This type of job is very commonplace. Third, I mentioned the possibility of having to chain up the damaged axles/sub-frame, but upon inspection found it unnecessary. Finally, the drivers were very respectful and were able to communicate effectively with me and the officer. PLEASE stop with the negative comments about the drivers. They were working and trying to make a living. We have been attempting to hire people for several months and are having difficulty finding people who want to work for one reason or another. There are restaurants, stores, etc., that are shutting down or limiting their hours because they can't find people willing to work. These drivers were willing to work and showed that they cared about what they were doing by their actions. I will ask again, please do not comment negatively about these drivers. Constructive criticism is always welcome on this channel. I have learned a LOT from my viewers who address things in a respectful manner. Please help us keep this a family-friendly channel which is open to ALL walks of life. Thanks for watching and God bless.
I was going to ask about chaining up the sub frame, however you explained here
Always enjoy the FAMILY FRIENDLY content Ron. Unfortunately I've found that if some people don't have something to complain about they seem to have no self worth. It's a shame be we see it a lot these days. I work in the auto industry and it seems the vast majority of drivers we deal with are of foreign birth. I drove class A for many years and can tell you it's not the easiest of jobs. I have a lot of respect for someone getting out there and hustling to make a living. Period! Keep up the great and keep posting the videos. God Bless and Be Safe
Two reasons, government is paying Americans to sit at home and collect unemployment. Two, government is importing foreign labor to undercut American wages. I don't blame the drivers, I blame government.
I too was one who wondered how it differed but being you specializing in recovery and having the equipment to secure it as needed plus the insurance
Some people bash those who are trying to do the right thing cause they feel comfort behind a keyboard
Hey I thought that skid plate attachment was only rated for 25k? Not trying to be negative that’s just why I always sling a trailer but I was curious when you said it was designed for a loaded trailer?
I want to take a moment and commend that driver. He was unsure, and wanted to make sure he understood everything, and that everything was in fact what Ron said it was. He was making sure HIS butt was covered.
Sure this may slow things down for Ron, but in the long-run, that's smart. Good way to keep your job.
I pay extra for employees that are polite but willing to speak up to make sure they understand things, I know when dealing with my vendors it can be a pain but taking the time to really understand the situation and respond positively about it is a fantastic trait in an employee, just like the people in this video did.
One thing I've learned since I started working was always cover your ass.
That driver did the right thing making sure he was able to leave without any problems once he unhooked from the trailer. That shows he is a good truck driver that cares about the laws.
Whenever I got pulled over at scales for DOT inspection, they mainly checked the registration on trailer, checked tires, brakes, airlines, never the axles or hangers, and went thru my lig book. I learned something new.
Log book.
You are so right that at least these guys came to work and actually made sure they did everything right. I can't imagine going to a foreign country and not knowing the language and still holding down a job. You have to give them credit for that.
Appreciate how polite you are to everyone no matter who they are are the mess you find. Thank you for your civility and kindness to others in distress.
I appreciate how he been nice to them
Theres one thing you really do a great job and show people how things are done . Please Keep up on the great videos , Thank You , Jack Thompson from Minnesota
The patience you show with these two and the customer service is top notch, much respect and another great video!
yep, i know a bunch of guys would treat them with less respect due to the HUGE language barrier but Ron once again is a true professional and it shows well here.
IF Ron is anything it's patient and kind
@@warrenmichael918 oh i would struggle inside to not die laughing. But I would do my best to help. The "uhhhh......." is what did it for me. lol Seem like good people though.
I was happy to see the driver GOAL before he pulled out from under the trailer. Kudos to him. And as always Ron, good job. Someday I’ll swing in and say hello in person. Bless
GOAL = "get out and look"
As ever Ron, you were diplomatic and very patient, professional and courteous goes a long way…..👍🇮🇲💕
I would say this whole thing was handled professionally on all sides. My brother was a 18 wheeler his whole was the only thing he did outside of the Navy and I dispatch for a lot of years we didn’t tow 18 wheelers the largest we towed were RV’s I am not an authority but from what I saw great job by all.
Everyone hates the DOT Inspections, but that trailer is one of the reasons they are there. If the damage was not noticed at the scales, can only imagine what could have happened with the trailer loaed and coming apart on the freeway. Glad they caught it before a disaster. When you are done with the repair I'm sure it will be better than new. Awesome job and video.
The worst part is that DOT never catches a driver the FIRST time they’re over limit or in need of repair!!
SMOKEY BEAR..ie DOT MAN..
IS MY FRIEND!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
LAW ENFORCEMENT AND TRUCKING PROFESSIONAL..NOW RETIRED!❤❤
...That moment you realize you have been watching Ron Pratt so much you recognize the streets and landmarks well enough to say "he's just minutes away from home". :D
Ron Pratt… the king of towing and recovery. At least in my eyes.
I admire those two men for trying to make a honest living I'm glad you were patient with them an as always you were curtious to them as you are with any one else ! This is what male a professional an sets you apart from others !
I admire your patience in situations like this. You have a great company and good services. Being on the road 42 yrs I appreciate people like you.
Friday lunchtime with Mr Ron. Perfect timing again.
I don't blame that other driver for watching. It's so interesting!
I needed a rotator and told the guy I’m here I’ll help ya so I hot to find out first hand how hard Ron’s job is THAT STUFF ON THE ROTATOR AINT LIGHTWEIGHT
Once again your professionalism is highlighted by your ability to work with other people with the language barrier. And on top of that I learned something new, again, about the T-head. Surprised me.
Lol it always makes me smile when I see a tow truck behind the scale. It means that when the steering wheel holders don't do there job the cops still are. Thank you for keeping us safe on the road officers.
If you go read back on a post. You see Ron defends the drive about what you said
🤣
As an Ex Truck Driver of over 20 years, Thank You for your services. May God Bless you and keep you safe.
Everytimes when I woke up on Friday morning I always said Ron pratt Friday because he's always upload his video on Friday once a week!😁
When closing doors on van trailers, allays look up and make sure the top part is secure. Those doors have lots of flex and will close with just the bottom pin secured.
I have picked up presealed reefer trailers at shippers before that the tops are not latched. Can be a pain getting permission to break a seal to close properly even if still at the shipper.
I just throw a ratchet strap around the bars when I encounter that
I appreciate the "teaching" that you give to me, for example about the swivel of your underloader and the chains to keep it one degree of freedom, not two.
I love how he teaches us all about the jobs like that. :) Way to go Ron.
I like this channel for that exact reason. Love the easy to understand breakdown of the rigging and such.
Love all of your videos. Nice to not have "arc" enemy, rain, interstate traffic, snow ice, mud,or hazmat for a change.
Arc nemesis is the term that gets kicked around this channel.
I'm glad u explained the small 5 wheel isn't designed to carry heavy loaded trailer, 😊
During the montage at the beginning all I could picture was the big rig drivers thinking “oh crap, that was Ron in the tator! I hope there is no big wreck ahead!”
Re : Chaining up the T-bar, my understanding there is that not only does it prevent the twin pivot points allowing the t-bar to rotate and potentially strike the underside of the trailer, but if it swingt the pivot under the 5th wheel would be at the wrong angle. It should only ever be able to tip front to back, as it it were to allow tipping sideways (if t-bar swung 90 degrees) you risk the trailer deciding to lie down and take a nap. (Then you really would need the rotator) Similar to when rigs turn the tractor unit too far when trying to get a trailer back out a ditch and losing the trailer over completely.
It's never good when the trailer wants to take a nap
I like the idea of what your rotator can do, that under reach is a God send with the ability to do different things, I've had some good teachers in the past, but I believe you are the best, you take the time to explain almost every detail of what you do and why it is done by showing us how to do it, I've learned a lot from watching your videos, God bless, be safe, watch out for motorcyclists, little kids, little old ladies going to Bingo, and furry critters on the road
Chuckles, little old ladies on the road. Older men, too.
Ron you show people the right way to tow anything , and please stay safe and be careful
yes a lot of these towing companies on youtube don't know what there doing
You did what you needed to do in a very respectful way to try and get them to understand events.
Ron, You have the patience of a saint when working to overcome the language barrier,, Good job,,, :-)
Good morning thanks for the video please upload the video two times a week thank you so much God bless you
Yes, love where the camera is located in the cab so we can see u shift the gears, yeaaaa Baby
And another successful job, well done Ron. Have a good day and be safe.
Absolutely love the video. It is great to see the 5th wheel attachment being used. I had not seen you use this previously, so this is a real treat. Thank you for another awesome video!
You're the man Ron! A lot can be learned from watching you. Thanks
Friday morning breakfast with Ron & Tator. Always a good time with them.
I think this job was very well done, looked like a typical run of the mill tow to me. For someone that may have never run into an incident like this, you really were a true professional explaining the process.
Ron, many thanks for including the time lapse drive up and down I-55; I grew up in Barnhart (Jeff County) and went to school in Cape back in the early and mid 80s. I have countless trips up and down that stretch of highway in just about every weather condition imaginable, including snow, ice, blizzards and even drove under a tornado or two in Perry and Ste. Gen counties, so these drives are always like a leisurely stroll down memory lane for me!
The driver's (both) English is plenty good enough to drive, remember that these and many others are from countries that any authority is most likely corrupt, they behaved correctly and politely, in my humble opinion.
Great work Ron, thanks for sharing.
Best regards from the UK.
I agree. We were able to converse. They treated me with respect and I treated them likewise. I have to give them credit that they were out working and earning a living. We have had ads out attempting to hire new team members for several months and haven't been able to find anybody. It seems as though we are not the only company having this problem in the U.S. There are local restaurants that are shutting down due to lack of personnel. It's insane. The two men were working....period...they deserve credit for that, in MY humble opinion. Thanks for watching and God bless.
@@RonPratt well said Sir, yes, they were very polite indeed, heaven knows what conditions they endured in their country, we are seeing mass emigration and corresponding immigration throughout the world these past 20 years or more.
Stay safe.
John.
Some of the smoothest Landing gear Ive ever seen on a trailer.. let alone on a rental trailer lol.
I think that the hardest part of this job was the communication between you and the truckers. Stay safe and God bless.
What another great video, I have enjoyed watching it. When I was driving long haul I always did a full walk around to make sure there were no defects. God bless everyone also Ron and his team and all the first responders be safe and make it home. 🙏❤🇨🇦
That 5th wheel is handy especially if have a 2 semi collision and have two trailers to pull off. Great video Ron can't wait for the next.
As an Aussie, it is so fun to see how stuff like this is done crossed the pond. Thanks so much for your awesome footage, Ron.
Very good instructive video Ron!I was working for a broker in food distribution and his brother-in-law(who was working in the same field of work)called us to go help one of his drivers who was not only overload with chicken meat but also had his suspension blades broken in the scale parking!I went there to meet him, unload his pallets into my truck and was asked by the controller to go myself on the scale...OVERLOAD!!I went back to his truck, dropped the overload pallets and proceed to the client with the remainng pallets;it took me 6 hours to do all that! What an adventure!
i absolutely how you handle each and every situation as it comes and how awesome your customer service is even with language barriers. love how you explain everything your doing. keep up the great work and please be safe out there, we've lost way too many tow operators and traffic controllers in the past few years and would hate to see anything happen to you Ron.
Another awesome video. I appreciate you showing us the right way to tow a damaged trailer safely. I've been following you for quite a while and that is the first time I've seen you use the mini 5th wheel. I learned a lot from this one. Thank you.
RON, Hello, good afternoon, it’s 16;58 wow, great language problem, a VERY SORE SUBJECT OF MINE anyhow, you got the rejected trailer for repairs, the patience of an angel, stay well God Bless
enjoy the day, GOD BLESS, YOU ALL THERE, 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
i live in sydney australia am a retired truckie long haul very impressed with your vids and towing etc you are very calm with your customers and polite keep on towing etc God bless all stay safe
Loved that change of pace trailer job.
Ron, You are a "good lad". Down driveway to scale house you were doing the regulated speed -- 20mph. (On the freeway 70.)
The busier you are, the more great videos we get to see. Thank you for sharing. God Bless and stay safe.
i'm in trucking school and i am so glad to be aware of this type of situation
Tator time...I love 😍😍Tator time 👀✔👍
Love how you took your time, tried your best at explaining to the drivers what had to be done. Excellent job. I'm at a mining facility in Pueblo, by the way. Know some of the Pratt family down this way.
Thank you Ron. It's nice to see other things than just wrecks
Kudos for your patience sir. I know first hand how difficult this can be when there's a language barrier.
Good job Ron. You always handle those situations well. Language barrier or not!
Thanks Ron for another great video! Stay safe!
The main theme song just reminds me of old 2000s news stations with some fantastic news. I dig that.
Thanks Ron. Another interesting tow job calmly and professionally done.
Wonder how many local drivers thought " is Ron really that bored that he's trucking on the side ? "
probably none....see a 53' trailer on a tow rig and obviously something is up....
Tator's gotta be one of the more expensive ways of towing a trailer.
The local drivers..with any common horse sense..knew Ron was doing his job. :)
Good morning from Southeast South Dakota
238 truckers disliked this video (and counting); they be jealous of how convenient the 5th wheel setup is on the Rotator in comparison to a big rig. 😏
thanks for taking your time and explaining it clearly to the guys.
The whole operation was run like a training film produced for some statutory body, clear instructions and a do as I do; not the rough and ready it-is-good-enough school of risk-takers. Everything is clear and explained, I feel I could watch this and learn.
A trailer is never empty, when not loaded it's hauling sailboat fuel! ;-)
Dispatcher/broker brains.
Motorcycle doors?
Teehee! Nice one :)
As always your videos are a learning experience for those who have the eyes and ears to see and hear exactly what you are saying. As always GBU and yours. Hugh
Hey Ron I love your videos and your channel keep on saving vehicles from being stuck.
That was a great recuse of a crippled trailer. A very interesting video that shows doing everything the right way. Ron and Tator are an unbeatable pair.
Awesome , Thanks to the drought , I just discovered land on property I bought in Florida. , Thanks Ron
Patience is a Virtue and that's what you have with those young men easy recovery great job
Boy does this one bring back some memories
Good morning Ron you did a great job. Have a safe and happy Friday.
Ron, I love how you all are setting yourselves up for a greater future in any recovery situation. Slowly but surely setting up for future expanded success. DOT is there for a reason......to catch these overlooked items when for the most part Trucks and Trailers become numbers over time. I have seen quite a bit as most of your viewers have, and do not pay attention to the closeminded comments from those who choose to speak opinion rather than experience. Dealing with loading quite a few international loads, I am glad we have DOT standards in place!
I love watching your videos I always learn something new either how to hook something up or about new products that come out. You are awesome. May God bless you and your family and keep you safe.
I just have to say that is one hell of a wrecker. You've got to be proud. I would be.
Hi Ron. Love the video. I'd like to see a "Day in the Life Of Ron." From the time you get up till maybe you get to go to bed that night. I think it would be interesting for everyone to see it's not all towing. Thank you sir.
There's a Channel that focuses on their concrete business and the guy starts his videos the same way taking his garbage out going to get cofffee at the convience store. It would be nice to throw a 1min Ron's life clip at the beginning or at the end.
Similar to the video of "Sub Frame Swap" from a few years ago.
I love the light bar vs pig tail explanation. With the light bar you don't have to worry with the ground gremlin. It heck to see a rig at night with flashing trailer lights til he/she stops.
Can't blame the guy for wanting to be sure he's clear, getting a CDL is hard, losing one is easy
I have seen the fifth wheel attachment in a few past videos, but I don't think that i have ever seen it being used before, at least that I remember.
The best channel I follow👍👍👍
We always enjoy you. Thank you
I'm glad you explained the chain setup. I wasn't sure what that accomplished at first.
Good Morning Mr Ron Pratt Sir
Love the Videos Ron
Thanks for taking us along..
.
Another award winning job! Keep up the great work.
Ron bet you feel like a road warrior driving your extra large unit when you're pulling those 53 footers down the road 🤪 Slowrider from Carolina 👍
It would have been a good visual to have seen that set-up going down the highway.
Talking about a long nose 👃 Peterbilt it's almost half as long as the 53 ft trailer he's pulling down the road 🤪
He was probably 90-100 feet in length bumper-to-bumper??
Good morning
Afternoon Terry from the UK
your a better man than I. My patients of language barriers has been dissolved. Good job Sir.
Patient and professional Ron. A learning experience.
Would be fun to see the repair work for this one. Have you considered a second channel?
Ron will not show any of that kind of stuff as he doesnt show hardly anything from in the shop out of respect for his customers
@@darkrevenger04 People being towed are not customers?????
He did a video on replacing the slider on a trailer a while back.
No offense but I do not blame the driver for double checking that they could leave the trailer with you that means he takes his job seriously
Absolutely. I don't fault him for that either. I went with him to speak to them officer so he was certain he understood. Thanks for watching and God bless
If he took his job seriously he’d have done a pre trip
@@RonPratt Also seemed like the other guy was trying to help you explain it to him as well. At least that is what I got out of the conversation.
@@Mr135792468a In the driver's defense....I know what to look for and I didn't spot the problem immediately. I had to search for it and I knew from the pics I had been sent. Thanks and God bless.
@@anthonystike6034 I did a pretrip and things looked ok until I crept across a scale and their cameras caught a little bald piece on a trailer tire with a little cord showing. It was on the bottom when I did my checks so no way I could see it. Things happen. Leave it to them picky DOT people to find something. The DOT gal was friendly and smiling and all of that and just wrote a violation on the paper work and let me go on and I snuck it on back to our yard and had it replaced
that is nice light system compare to your old one, very nice and prayers be with you as you drive safe
Good to see you ron take care be safe out there buddy see you soon
