- If you are planning to visit Reggio Emilia town, in Emilia-Romagna - Italy, here you’ll find the best tips on things to do in the city, with a sightseeing map of the most relevant points of interest to enjoy, so you can easily imagine and organize your trip: WHAT to see, HOW to plan your visit, and WHY to discover Reggio Emilia.
In this video, you’ll discover WHAT are the major attractions that you can't go home without having seen, including Piazza Prampolini, Palazzo Comunale, the Duomo, the Bordello and Clock Towers, the Baptistery, Palazzo del Monte, the Notaries Palace, the “Tricolore’s Room”, San Prospero Square and the Church of San Prospero, Chiostri di San Pietro, Basilica della Ghiara, Romolo Valli Theater, Ariosto Theater, Cavallerizza Cesare Zavattini Theater, the works of the Spanish architect Calatrava (3 bridges and the High-Speed station) and Bismantova!
Reggio Emilia is famous for its gastronomy and lifestyle quality, but it’s also a town of art and history.
On the Via Emilia you can find Parma, Reggio Emilia, Modena, Bologna…and so on… all of these cities are 30km apart because that is how far a Roman soldier could walk in a day!
Piazza Prampolini is the center of Reggio Emilia: from here you can admire the Palazzo Comunale, the Duomo, the Bordello and Clock Towers, the Baptistery, Palazzo del Monte, and the Notaries Palace.
The Torre del Bordello, 51 meters high, is the tallest building in the historic center.
The first stone of the Cathedral was laid around 857, but what we see today is the remake of around 1500. Next to the Cathedral is the Baptistery of San Giovanni, with its Renaissance facade.
Did you know that Italy’s tri-color flag was first adopted in Reggio Emilia? There is the “Tricolore’s Room” in a small museum where you can learn about how the flag was chosen to represent.
Piazza San Prospero is a smaller but still scenic square, from which you can access the Church of San Prospero.
Chiostri di San Pietro is a treasure that today is full of art, food, and innovation.
The Basilica della Ghiara deserves a visit especially to admire Guercino's masterpiece: the "Crucifixion of Christ".
There are three theatres in the city: Teatro Municipale Romolo Valli, Teatro Ariosto, and Teatro Cavallerizza Cesare Zavattini. All of them offer high-quality shows all year round.
AROUND REGGIO EMILIA
There are 4 works that the Spanish architect Calatrava has designed for Reggio Emilia: 3 bridges and the High-Speed station.
As the Ayers Rock in Australia, also Reggio Emilia has a sacred mountain: Bismantova stone dates back to 15 million years ago and appears also in Dante’s purgatory!
