  • The Zamioculcas zamiifolia raven is a beautiful cultivar of the classic green plant with the same name. However, the Raven sports completely black leaves and stem. In this video I share the care tips and show you different ways of propagating it, with a whooping one year update at the end of the video to show you how the cuttings did.

Your dedication to bring information to the houseplant community is unrivaled. Most don't even do short term updates on propagation, you take a year to do it.

Wow! Video tracking progressive over 1 year. That’s really commitment. Regarding the patent- its my understanding that you can separate the plant but not propagate (from cuttings or otherwise). Patents can be country specific or international and there are ways to enforce - prohibiting sales for example. This might be a good Q&A video if you know of an attorney who would be will to discuss the subject.

Both my regular green and raven ZZ's did so much better once I cut down their watering to just once a month, on the 1st of each month. The Raven in low light does fine but the one in brighter light is definitely larger even though I bought them at the same time.

  • @swayback7375

I do much better with fast draining soil in plastic pots with much less watering than clay.
I also found the cuttings will usually root and grow the best when I put them in a large pot that contains a big healthy plant with lots of roots through the soil.
Ive actually found this to be the best way FOR ME to root almost all my cuttings and really it’s the best way to grow many hard to grow plants.
The big plant controls the soil moisture and health, when it’s 1 cutting in 1 pot then most of that soil can only be controlled by watering it.
It just works better for me and honestly it mimics nature. Most small cacti and succulents grow under nursery trees for many years, haworthia grow in tangles of thorns etc.
I even have agave growing in pots with bananas. They love it! They get loads of sun, they dry out every day but get water almost every day. Fastest growing agave I have and in potbound musa.

RAVEN is a trademarked name and not a cultivar or variety. The cultivar name is 'Dowon'. It is also patented in the US so propagating it for commercial use is prohibited.

I already sold some but have since closed down my shop

This must be the slowest ever growing plant. The plant that needs very little attention and care yet also the easiest to kill without any intention of doing it😂,

What a relief u killed mommy by overwatering... So did I, almost.. Never get why she is been advertised as a beginner plant as I am experienced, alocasia and calathea thriving.. But poor zz raven died back about 70 %, propergated one leaf successfully in water puuuh 🍀(I do water mommy now every 4 month although in a southern window)

Thankfully they can be propagated by leaves haha. We can turn them into more plants when we find them overwatered 😅
