excellent video. an excellent way to use off cuts nice description at the beginning and your use of doing more than one at at a time is very good. ps i love the 3 hole idea . thank you
Great demo, Bert. You have some great tips I may need to incorporate in my next Lantern workshop this Fall. You might want to add a video description to go along with your title.
I’m glad I came across your video Bert. I never would have thought about 3 holes instead of 4. Brilliant idea! I made a few of the 4 holes ones at Christmas but struggled with getting the holes centred. I’ve taken away a few tips by watching. Thanks!
I'm new to woodturning, this looks like a good beginner project. Not that big a deal if you make a mistake, just try again with the next one. I'm definitely going to try this one. Thanks for a good and easy to understand video. 👍
Thanks for watching and the kind comments. I made a short update to the lantern video recently. These lanterns are a good beginner project, it provides the need to make a mandrel to fit the bore, which is something that does take a bit of practice. I made two before I got the fit right, but once it was made it will fit many projects drilled with that same bit. I make mini bird houses too and my bird house mandrel is about 10 years old and still works perfectly. Have fun, stay safe and remember to have fun.
@@jackimundymakes Thanks for watching, I use a few dabs of hot melt glue to hold the tea light in place. I have found that different woods move differently when the center is hollowed out, the hot glue takes up space so a slightly loose fit works perfectly. Just a couple small dabs does the trick.
I really liked your video Bert. Can't wait to try it myself, where can I get one of those trim gauges that you used to mark your centers, can not find it anywhere. Thanks
Thanks for watching. I can’t remember where I bought the sliding trim gauge. However one can do the same with a try square, or any marking gauge tool, (lots of different styles on Amazon) setting the ruler protrusion to the appropriate setting.
Thank you for an excellent video. Why do you use a jam chuck instead of using a slightly longer piece of wood and finishing the top next to a regular chuck
@@dalerussell7834 Thanks for watching. Good question, when I was first making these I used to do as you suggested but found that a lot of the off cuts I had were a bit too short and the wood was to nice to toss. I started using the jam chuck because I could turn and drill several blanks quickly and then use the same jam chuck on them to turn the outside details and top end quicker, easier, and more consistently. It works for me.
@@jimbrock8928 Thanks for watching and the comments. Room for a logo was one reason I only put three windows, the main reason was to get more light to reflect out to the room when hanging on a tree.

Thanks for watching. I had a lot of fun making them.
Thank you Bert. I am new to turning and this was on my list of things to make. Love how you engineered it. Thanks again
Thank you for watching and the kind comments. The lanterns were a fun project, and were very well received by those who got them for their tree.

Thanks for sharing. I’ve subscribed. Pray tell; How do you stop the tea light falling out the bottom?
